Tom Winton’s Cloudstreet, is a novel based on two Australian families sharing one huge, haunting house. The story is filled with creative twists and turns, which come from the Winton’s usage of magic realism. The gigantic house is set near a river, which plays an important part in the flow of the book. One of the main characters, Fish Lamb, lost a part of himself, mentally, when he nearly drowned to death, early on in the book. Brought back to life by his mother Oriel, Fish though mentally challenged, longs to return to the water, where he felt warm and safe. The previous quote can be applied to the character of Fish quite literally, as his deepest desire is to return to the river, and he holds on to his dream of escape for the rest of the book.

When Fish nearly died, in the beginning, he experienced a safe warm haven, explained in the following quote, “Fish’s pain stops, and suddenly it’s all just haste and the darkness melts into something warm. Hurrying toward a big friendly wound in the gloom.” Fish is then suddenly taken away from this place, and returns to the real world when he is brought back to life by his mother. It seems that for the rest of the book, Fish dislikes the fact that he was brought back to life. He even goes to forget the existence of his mother, who brought him back, “He just looks through her like she’s not there, like she’s never been there.” In a visit to a therapist, Fish mentions the water many times, and stares past his mother at the waves on the wallpaper. The audience can see Fish’s desire for the river when the therapist asks where he wants to go, and Fish replies, “The water, the water!”

In an interesting passage, called, “Wherever the River Goes”, Winton uses a different narrative that seems to be talking to Fish. The narrator shows what Fish wants in the river when he tells him, “Your time will come, Fish, you’ll have a second of knowing, a man for a moment, and then it won’t matter because you’ll be me, free to come and go, free to puzzle and long and love, free of the net of time.” This also leads to the irony of Fish’s dream, in that the audience knows that when Fish goes to the river he will die, which is ironic to the usual flowing river as a symbol for life. Even in the previous quote the narrator tells Fish that he will be able to do all these things, usually associated with life, when he goes to the river and drowns.

Yet in the end, Fish reaches his ironic dream, when he finally falls into the beautiful flowing river. And in the moment before he dies, Fish the man, truly feels himself for who he truly is, and Winton beautifully describes his death from Fish’s point of view, “...And I bust into the moon, sun and stars of who I really am. Being Fish Lamb. Perfectly. Always. Everyplace. Me.” In this novel, Fish’s dream was the river, and as a vessel for his dream he had to follow where both the river and the dream went.
