Journalists strive to be objective because it gains them credibility. Objectivity is by no means equivalent to the truth. Reporting the news objectively means reporting the news without any biases or value judgments. Nobody is going to take seriously an organization claiming to be a credible news source if it interjects slanted arguments in the midst of their reports. Objectivity is the “most fundamental professional standard” of journalism (11). (CITE C&H) Journalists with extreme views are often dismissed by the general public. (Synthesize this) Many public figures often blame the media for many of their problems and have encouraged people to boycott news sources they believe are unfairly biased. This has prompted many news organizations to tout their objectivity, claiming they do not make value judgments. Many news organizations have adopted slogans such as “News you Can Trust” and “We Report, You Decide” in order to assure society they adhere to the most important virtue of journalism. News organizations claim that they are merely stating facts and allowing people to formulate their own opinions based on the information. However, even in a medium where there is such an emphasis on remaining objective, biases still exist.

By examining the selection process of front page news articles for a newspaper, one can see how biases can still exist in news production. In their book, Media Society, David Croteau and William Hoynes emphasize the importance and meaning of front page newspaper stories. By running a story on the front page, they write, the paper is saying that event is one of the most important events of the day. Those are the stories that will be seen on people’s tables at home and on the newsstands on the street, making their selection process the most important decision of the day. A lot of factors define what stories land on the front page. The decision is ultimately made by a group of editors. Croteau and Hoynes assert that these editors define newsworthiness daily by considering the article’s timeliness, expected impact on community, and the prominence of the participants in the article. These editors are human beings whose goal is to sell papers; they are making business decisions when they decide what goes on the front page. The news they choose is going to be shaped by their professional conventions and values. There are many more articles than can fit on the front page, so the editors have to decide what goes on the front page. They will choose the articles they believe that are the most significant events and also the articles that will appeal to their constituents. These editors are thus making decisions about what events, people, and views are important, which allows their personal and professional biases into their paper.

Crime news is another prime example of the biases newspapers have when deciding what to put in their paper. There are many biases in the selection criteria of the news, as mentioned above. Newspapers put in stories that will appeal to their constituents. Newspapers put a lot of crime stories in the paper because they believe there is a public fascination with disruptive behavior. The recent trend of successful voyeuristic television shows supports this claim. (GET NAME) Katz, in his book, Media Culture and Society, wrote that basically all of the scenarios of the crime stories reported on from day to day are the same, just with different dates and people. However, he claims, “the crimes do not become newsworthy because of what they tell about crime” (50). Instead, people read the stories because they call morals and social norms into question, which people are interested in. A study conducted in Chicago showed that news readers could recall crime stories better than stories about education, Congressional activities, conflicts in the Middle East, and their state government. Katz says that newspapers make it seem like much more crime is taking place than really is, explaining, “The picture one obtains about reading crime in the newspapers inverts the picture about crime one gets from reading police statistics. A study examining 0 years of front page crime news stories in cities found that violent crimes made up 70 percent of the crime news stories. However, in reality, violent crimes only made up 0 percent of the crime rate. Newspapers know that people want to read about crime so they over represent it in the newspaper.

There will always be bias when it comes to selecting the news. News selection is a human process governed by many different professional and organizational conventions and norms. There are millions of events taking place each day but only limited spaces to report on the events. For this reason, news organizations will select stories and issues that will interest and inform their constituents. The news organizations and journalists will “shy away from news that could hurt their own firms, themselves, or their ability to obtain the news” (18). (CITE THIS IN GANS) News production is also a business; its goal is to have the most readers or viewers. Only after news organizations select what will be covered in the news, do they strive to be as objective as possible.

Write your objectivity in journalism research paper

Objectivity, however, can never completely exist in a human institution. Croteau and Hoynes insist, though, that “the ideal of objectivity…is ultimate

The American Dream

The American dream may mean many different things to everyone in American. Each person has his or her opinion about the American dream. Some people think the American dream is to noncommunist country. I believe that the American dream is freedom, to be who I am, and a chance to pursue happiness these are three main issues of the American dream that I think is important. Each one of these issue play specific role in my life while living in America.

In America, we have many freedoms that people in other parts of the world can only dream of. These freedoms include the right to free speech, freedom of religion, and the right to vote. Freedom is the ability to do what you choose with your life without breaking laws that were made for the good of everyone. We are not truly free in the purest sense, but we do have many freedoms. American people can choose what kind job they have and can get rewarded for doing a good job. However, we are not truly free. Freedom is symbiotic with financial stability. Those with more money actually have a reasonable chance at getting elected into major public office, while those with no money for advertising are given no chance by the media.

The fact that true freedoms only with financial and economic security is also evident in the courts. Those with more money can pay for better lawyers and often win cases in which the educated public thought otherwise.

In my heart, I am a black man. By law, I am an American. I’ve learned to live the cultures way at home and the American way outside. By mingling up in this society, I am learning American culture and Christianity. Although I’m surrounded by the American culture most of the time, I have been able to keep my African heritage alive in my heart. I am learning to write in Spanish using the internet. Our culture is to respect our elders and especially our teachers. In our culture, teachers have the highest position in our society. Education is the most important thing to us. Another important thing our culture teaches us is to respect other cultures and religions. I am one of those very compassionate people who cannot see anyone in any kind of pain or suffering. It kills me too see children left out in the world with no one to care for them, with nowhere to live, with nothing to do. I prey every night that God will watch over his children and protect from harm because they need it more then the rest of us. I am proud of myself. I am proud of who I am. I have a high self-esteem which carries me far into life. High self-esteem gives me confidence and the assurance that I can achieve all my goals if I have faith in myself.

To pursue happiness is one of the main things America is about. We have a right to pursue all of our dreams with the best of our ability. We should not allow anyone or thing get in our way of following our destiny. Happiness is very important to the human spirit, body, and soul. Happiness tends to give people a sense of peace. With that same peace we try to teach our kids about this happiness and peace.

This is what I consider the American dream. I have my opinion about what this country stands for. I believe freedom, the ability to be who you are, and to search for happiness should be what really matter most in the world today. You won’t find to may people who can figure out what the American dream is and that around with blind knowledge of other people’s opinion, instead of finding the truth.

Did you ever reach a point in your life when you said to yourself, “What am I doing with my life?” or “Where is my life headed?” I feel that in some peoples’ lives they reach a point where they are just not happy with the status quo. They feel then that they need to do something meaningful and constructive with his or her life. This wake up call doesn’t always happen when it should happen. Some people are fortunate to get their call early in life and were always spectacular students, some don’t get it until high school when they realize that their grades really do matter then, some don’t get it until they almost flunk out of college, and then some don’t get it until later in life. I personally was the one who didn’t realize my true potential and calling in life until a course of events pointed me in the right direction. This higher calling was that of pursuing higher education to not just better myself but to better the community and the people around me.

I was not always the best student, as a matter of fact most of the time I was probably the worst student. For the majority of my schooled life I was content with just getting by and doing what I had to do to “float the boat.” And that’s it, I did no more than I had to do and I was pretty content to be the average student that I was. Family, friends, and teachers were always saying that they could see potential in me and that they wanted me to utilize my talent and intelligence. But instead of being focused on academics, I was more focused on slacking off and hanging out with friends.

I always had some aspirations to do more with my life, but I really had no plan of action to go along with it. And I continued to do just barely what needed to be done to stay in college. I had recently been employed at Kaufmann’s and had another job at Dollar Bank. I was 1 Years old, and to have been making the kind of money I was making made me see nothing but green. This clouded my judgment and at the time I really wasn’t concerned with my grades as long as I was in college and my parents stayed off my back.

It wasn’t until I went to register for classes for the fall of 000 that I received my wake up call. The advisor told me that I couldn’t register for any classes because I was on academic suspension. I was completely humbled and disheartened. I went and spoke to the dean and he gave me my second chance. He told me he could tell that my grades didn’t reflect my intelligence because I had passed a physics course without having taken the prerequisite. He told me that if I wanted to stay in school I would have to rethink my priorities and possibly quit one of my jobs. I went home and thought about what he said and realized he was right. So that semester I went about trying to refocus my life. It was not an easy task by any means. But the more I worked at it the more I realized that my focus should have been on academics and not on minimum wage jobs that come and go.

After September 11, 001, I realized that the next day is not promised to you so you need to do the best that you have with what God has given you. You should live everyday as though it is your last and at the end of the day you should have the satisfaction of knowing that you did the very best you could possibly do. Having this mindset helped me tremendously. My main priorities were in this order God, Family, School, Friends, and then Work. My life couldn’t have gotten any better from this point. I now take every situation (good or bad) in life and try to make it an opportunity. This is because I believe that God sends you trials in life to make you a stronger and better person just as he sends you good times. Therefore I believe all situations in life are blessings and that you just have to find the good in there somewhere.

I recently lost my job at the end of February because the poor economy. At first, I was very upset and depressed because it was the first time I been without a job and had difficulty finding another. This was until I realized that this was again another opportunity to make myself a stronger and better person. It also made me realize that working these types of jobs is not what I want to do with the rest of my life. So instead of being depressed, I decide that this was an opportunity for me to concentrate solely on my studies and to make my last two semesters at community college the best that they could possibly be. I was able to make the deans list last semester and I plan to do so from now on. I am headed in the right direction this semester and am carrying a .67 G.P.A at mid-term.

As you can see continuing school is very important to me. I am very interested in continuing my education at the University of Pittsburgh. I am committed to doing the best that I can possibly do and am convinced that after being as low as I was I can go nowhere but up. I am currently enrolled in the Engineering Science Transfer Program at CCAC that is designed to transfer into Pitt Engineering Programs. I am currently doing the most that I can do to raise my G.P.A up as high as I can by getting the highest grades that I can and retaking some of the classes that I didn’t do well in. It would truly mean the world to me to be admitted into your Mechanical Engineering Program. And I promise that if I am given the opportunity to do so that I will do the very best that I can possibly do.

Help Wanted Someone to Watch Over Me

There she goes again, fluttering around the house like a beautiful butterfly. My father’s

wife was the “Donna Reed” of wives. Wonder Woman would have cringed in fear by the very

presence of my father’s wife. This woman was able to take care of her household in one single

bound. There were no limits to this wife’s talents, abilities, and lastly, responsibilities. This all

powerful wife is my mother. As I look back, she was more like a busy little worker bee, tending

to all who needed her, while still being just as beautiful and graceful as a butterfly. Growing up in

this household, it seemed quite natural for mom to do everything for her precious family. She

wanted to be the perfect wife and mother. It seemed to bring her much joy when she was cooking,

cleaning, doing yard work or helping with homework, nursing us back to health when we were ill,

or just going grocery shopping. I have always wondered though, why she never brought us along

with her to the market? Of course, this viewpoint came from a small ignorant child. None the

less, mom was a natural and she excelled in everything she did for her family. I never heard her

complain about her workload, but I often wondered if she felt overloaded. Was her stress level to

the point of no return? Because the memories of my “super human” mother are so prevalent, I

was very intrigued when I read Judy Brady’s essay about wanting a wife. I was even more

intrigued by her insinuation that everyone could benefit by having a wife. I find Brady’s writing

techniques and her appeal to her audience makes for a very persuasive view point. However,

Brady seems to rely mostly on her first hand experiences, which might not be enough to persuade

her readers.

“I Want a Wife” is Judy Brady’s attempt at persuading the men and women of the world

that if they want to maintain a happy, stress free lifestyle, they need to find someone to take care

of them. Mrs. Brady uses the rhetorical patterns of process analysis with some illustration,

classification, cause/effect, and mainly emotional appeal to take her stand.

Brady classifies herself as a wife and mother very early in her essay (41). However, she

fails to mention how long she has been married or how many children she has.

Brady illustrates that she has a male friend who has recently divorced and is now looking

for a new wife. Brady was thinking about her friend’s predicament one night and she realized that

she too, would like to have a wife (41).

After proclaiming that she would like to have a wife, Brady uses process analysis to show

us what chores she would have her wife do for her and how to do them. Brady states that she

would like to go back to school to better herself financially, but in order to accomplish this, she

would have to have someone to take over all of her responsibilities as a wife and mother (41).

The author uses the phrase “I want a wife” repetitively (1 times) to keep the audiences attention

and stress the importance of her work. Brady gives detailed examples of chores she expects her

wife to accomplish. Brady states, “I want a wife who will work and send me to school. And

while I am going to school I want a wife to take care of my children.” She goes on to say “I want

a wife who will take care of my physical needs. I want a wife who will keep my house clean, pick

up after me and the children, cook for us, wash our clothes, and know where everything is just in

case I need something” (41). I feel that Brady is talking from her own personal experiences as a

wife herself. She gives many examples that are very specific in nature as to what she wants her

wife to do.

Brady’s tone throughout her essay is one of resentment filled with sarcasm. Brady states,

“I want a wife who will not bother me with rambling complaints about a wife’s duties. But I want

a wife who will listen to me when I feel the need to explain a rather difficult point I have come

across in my course of studies” (41). She seems to almost dare her readers to deny that they

wouldn’t benefit from having a wife.

Although Brady didn’t use any specific cause and effect strategies in her essay, I feel that I

picked up on one. I feel that what caused Brady to want a wife was that her duties as a wife and

mother consumed her. I feel maybe she feels under appreciated for all that she does for her

family. Maybe her family wants too much.

I feel that Brady uses good description in her essay. She describes so vividly her

expectations of a wife, her readers just might agree with her. However, I found two fallacies in

this essay that may detract from it’s effectiveness. Brady asserts that everyone would benefit

from having a wife (414). This is allness. This can’t be true for everyone since there are people

who believe that they already have the perfect, stress free lifestyle. Brady also stereotypes the

role of a wife. This is prevalent throughout the whole essay. I also sense that Brady may be over

simplifying the issue in her essay. Would it be much easier to go out and get a wife to take care

of the household, children and spouse than to come together as a family and divide up the

chores?

Brady appeals to the emotion in her readers. She makes us stop and think how we would

feel if we had someone to satisfy our every need. Someone to have on hand to pamper and baby

us whenever we beckoned. I think that Brady’s best emotional appeal is written in the last

sentence of her essay, “My God, who wouldn’t want a wife” (414)?

In conclusion, although Brady has a couple of fallacies within her essay, she has been

semi-successful in her persuasion because of the techniques she chose to use. Brady was not

successful in persuading me to join her in wanting a wife, however, I discussed this essay with my

mother and I asked her the simple question, “What would you do with a wife?” My mother’s

reply, “Rest my dear, rest!”

The Things They Carried

By Tim OBrien

What is the definition of necessity? According to Websters New World Dictionary a necessity is a great need. In reality, necessity is a rather difficult concept to describe. As children in a sheltered environment there may be emotional attachments to parents, a blanket or stuffed toy. To a small, healthy child these are probably the only other necessities he requires other than food, beverages, and the ever-demanding diaper change. Similarly, in The Things They Carried by Tim OBrien what a person requires for his or her survival may vary with the particular situation they are in and also the time element involved. These needs may become distorted when one finds himself in a situation that is unfamiliar or dangerous. In the case of this story, the situation is the Viet Nam War. In these circumstances a person would experience an extreme feeling of vulnerability and may want to hold on to all that he can, anything that will give him comfort. This is not totally unlike a childs instinct to hold onto a blanket for comfort when he/she feels threatened. Even though these necessary items or ideas may impair or even threaten to destroy the person, it may be impossible for the individual to release them.

The Things They Carried by Tim OBrien exhibits necessity from both destructive and constructive viewpoints. The story looks at the burdens the soldiers must bear and the effects the burdens have on someone in a life-threatening situation. When these burdens are looked at closely, the author makes the reader question whether these necessities the soldiers carry both physically and mentally keep them alive or lead to their destruction. OBrien examines the many angles of the how necessary certain items really were.

Order Custom Essay on The Things They Carried

One doesnt often consider what necessities a soldier must have to keep them alive. After reading the story it became all too clear that these were very easy to underestimate, particularly the ones that will keep them physically alive. It is hard to imagine a grunt would have to carry such large loads of weaponry, food, and clothing. OBrien lists these items first in the story, I believe, to show their importance. The things they carried were largely determined by necessity, he states on page 706, and goes on to talk about rations, water, defensive clothing, and necessary sleep gear (707). But, also listed in the same paragraph were items such as Rat Kileys comic books, Kiowas Bible, and Ted Lavenders six or seven ounces of premium dope. Although comic books and premium dope are not necessary for physical survival, to the soldiers they provided a sense of comfort. Perhaps the loneliness and isolation they men felt drove them to cling to their mental and other vices because it filled an emotional void which was a byproduct of terrible violence they faced in the war. Lieutenant Crosss fixation on Martha may have anchored him to a time of innocence that is indeed a great contrast to what he was experiencing in the conflict in Viet Nam.

It is also important to note the detailed list of military supplies. OBrien goes on and on about the weaponry the soldiers were responsible for carrying. First he lists the standard issue weapons such as rifles, grenades, flak jackets and helmets (708). Then the extra weapons the soldiers carried ranging from fragmentation grenades to brass knuckles to Kiowas hatchet (70 are discussed. Lee Strunk also carried and slingshot - a most primitive weapon compared to modern warfare weapons. They were ready to kill with a variety of weaponry. It is difficult to imagine the physical strength they needed to hump all of the equipment. OBrien emphasizes how great the weight really was when Ted Lavender is shot and the weight he was carrying made him fall like a big sandbag or something - just boom, then down (70). Another statement by OBrien - they carried all they could bear, and then some, including a silent awe for the terrible power for the things they carried,” (70) reminds one of how great their burdens must truly have been.

These burdens - the supplies the men carried to stay physically alive - are placed on the same level in terms of description as the objects carried that provided emotional support to the platoon.

“They carried USO stationary and pencils and pens. They carried Sterno, safety pins, trip flares . . .hot chow in green mermite cans . . .Black Flag insecticide . . . the weight of memory. . . each other . . . lice and ringworm. . .the land itself . . .the sky . . . the whole atmosphere . . . the carried gravity. They moved like mules.”

Note the last sentence’s reference to mules beasts of burden. OBriens writing style shows no differentiation between the subjects of food, weapons, reminders of home and good luck charms. They are all necessary burdens in his platoons eyes and they all had to be humped.

Another example of emotional nourishment is found in OBriens description on Lieutenant Crosss attachment to Martha. He carries her letters and reads them daily, and his love for her keeps him going and gives his life meaning. He also carries her photographs, and the pebble she sends him that constantly remind him of her. In the end, all of these necessities become a burden to heavy to bear for Lieutenant Cross. These possessions he holds so dearly bring back memories such as the night at the movies when Martha would not kiss him back as well as initiate fantasies about Martha, such as when Lee Strunk was in the tunnel.

Lieutenant Cross gazed at the tunnel. But he was not there. He was buried with Martha under the white sand at the Jersey shore. They were pressed together, and the pebble in his mouth was her tongue.”

Lieutenant Cross has a difficult time staying in touch with what is happening around him, perhaps because the fantasy world he retreats to so often is much more tolerable. This is evident by the way O’Brien skillfully moves between Cross’ thoughts between Martha and what is happening in his platoon. When Ted Lavender dies, Cross feels that it is his fault because he was thinking of Martha more than he was thinking of his men.

Even though there was nothing Lieutenant Cross could have done to prevent Lavenders death it is no consolation to Cross. Cross thoughts of Martha had nothing to do with Lavenders death, but for some reason Cross chooses to link to two together. It makes one wonder what other burdens cross is carrying that would lead to this intense feeling of guilt. Maybe it is a response to the horrific events he has witnessed in the war such as the cutting of the VC corpse and thinking about Martha’s innocence, which are in direct opposition to each other. In the end, Cross must leave the burden of his love behind, as he realizes it is not sustaining him, but destroying him. The love is simply too much for him to bear, so he burns Martha’s letters and gets rid of the pebble she sent him. This scene is faintly representative of Christ at Gesthemane, because Cross is alone and suffering a great amount of anxiety as his friends sleep. One can see the similarity of the guilt Cross carries and the guilt that Christ bore on his shoulders for the redemption of mankind. It is at this point of the story that O’Brien reveals the symbolism of Cross’ name. Cross then realizes the enormity of the burdens that the men carry. “It was very sad, he though. The things men carried inside. The things men did or felt they had to do” (718). Cross’ name obviously symbolizes his own burdens that he thought of as “necessary”, as well as those of his platoon.

Probably the greatest burden that the men felt the necessity to carry was the load of dignity. There was an unspoken need to stay tough, to maintain composure and not let the terror or anxiety they experienced through the horrors of war get the best of them. At some of the most dangerous times they may have panicked but it didnt last for long awkwardly, the men would reassemble themselves, first in private, then in groups, becoming soldiers again (715). They would cover their fear with humor; they used a hard vocabulary to contain the terrible softness… as if to encyst and destroy the reality of death itself (715).

O’Brien shows the meaning of this burden when he states, “they carried the soldier’s greatest fear, which was the fear of blushing. Men killed, and died because they were embarrassed not to” (716). This was the fear that weighed the men down the most, because it was hidden internally. They would only allow themselves to dream of freedom, because those that took the easy way out by wounding themselves were looked down upon, even though inside the soldier’s felt envy. This description gives the impression that the internal burdens that the men carried were keeping them alive, and were indeed necessary.

O’Brien writes from a soldier’s point of view but in the non-participant manner. He sees into the mind of Lieutenant Cross and relates to us probably what were extremely typical emotions both Cross and the rest of the platoon must have been feeling during the war. To deal with the turmoil and the ugliness of war, as well as the vulnerability they felt, the soldiers clung to what might be considered their “security blankets” anything familiar, comforting, and reminiscent of home and the innocence they left behind. O’Brien’s reliable point of view, thought written through the thoughts of Lieutenant Cross add validity to the story since he experienced the burdens of war first hand in Viet Nam.

Although O’Brien writes of mostly flat characters in the story, two round characters stand out above them Martha and Lieutenant Cross. Cross knew quite a lot about Martha basic demographics

“She was a virgin, he was almost sure. She was an English major at Mount Sebastian, and she wrote beautifully about her professors and roommates and midterm exams, about her respect for Chaucer and great affection for Virginia Woolf. She often quote lines of poetry; she never mentioned the war, except to say, Jimmy, take care of yourself.”

But Cross never would know if Martha loved him the way he loved her. “More than anything, he wanted Martha to love him as he loved her, but the letters were mostly chatty, elusive on the matter of love” (706).

Even though we don’t know much about Cross’s physical attributes, he is seen from more than one side. His very thoughts, feelings, and perceptions are quite obvious by the end of the story. The finality of his metamorphosis is realized when he lets the memory of Martha go. This change throughout the story leads to the final rounding of his character. It is evident at this time that it is not necessary to know anything more about Cross his thoughts create a great amount of the action and understanding of his character.

Tim O’Brien writes effectively from Cross’ (a soldier’s) point of view to put the reader in the driver’s seat. Through his thorough descriptions of “the things they carried” one can only mentally experience the weight the platoon had to physically and mentally endure.

In “The Things They Carried” O’Brien explores all of the many objects and emotions that lead to death and destruction. Ted Lavender is dropped to death by a bullet, as well as by the supplies on his back and his dreadful fear of the situation has been put into. Ted falls when he could carry his burdens no more. Lavender was so burdened by the things he needed to stay alive, that they finally caused his downfall and death.

In closing, O’Brien explores the idea of necessity from every angle, and finally brings one to the conclusion that the things men believe they need may become too much to bear. He not only examines the great physical demand that is placed on his men that is placed on the men as they carry their supplies, but the mental and emotional strain that weighs them down immensely. His portrayals of Ted Lavender and Lieutenant Cross are excellent examples of these burdens Ted through the description of his less-than-desirable lifestyle and his demise, and Cross through his deep love and agony that he feels about Martha. By allowing Ted to die and Cross to live, O’Brien perhaps was saying that to survive a horrible situation sometimes one must let go of the things he feels he needs to fill the voids in his own life. O’Brien makes the reader question what we feel we really need and what part these things play in our lives.

Shadow Puppet,

Javanese Traditional Art of Shadow Play

Shadow puppet theatre in Indonesian language means Wayang Kulit, is a unique combination of ritual, lesson, and entertainment to show communicated history, philosophy, ethnics, and culture. Wayang kulit has its origin in the ancient believe that the departed spirits return to Earth at night, and can be experienced on the light up screen and creating an interplay of shadow to the audience which play on through the night and still vibrant at dawn. The interplay relays to Hindu mythology and Javanese legend that deal with the external struggle between good and evil. The Javanese shadow puppet theatre combines the creative elements of puppets, music, History and story telling that make the Hindu and Javenese legends spring to life on the screen.

leather that is the material from whichthe figures are carved. The puppets Leather are made of buffalo skin and manually carved. Although not visible in front of the screen, the puppets are painted with intricate, brightly colored decorations and cut with tiny details, like curls in the hair that is visible when the puppet is held right upon the screen as the usually are. There are about 50 characters in the shadow puppet. The characters include kings, princes, teachers, gods, giants, demons, and ordinary people. The characters that have narrow eyes are refined and elegant. For example is Sri Rama or Prabu (king) Rama. The characters with wider eyes are more down to the Earth, like giants, demon, and citizen. For example is a clown named Semar. In wayang kulit, most of the characters speak in “Jawa kuno”, ancient Java language and in the language of “Kawi”, language that carries inspirations.

In performing the play, the shadow puppet play is accompanied by gamelan orchestra. Gamelan is a traditional music instrument from Java. The repertoire consist of an overture, music for traveling, each of the character, and battle music. The music in shadow puppet performance is very much important therefore, the gamelan players must be able to respond to the spontaneous timing and direction of “dalang”, the shadow puppet master to make the performance alive, communicative, and attractive.

Most shadow play is based on two epic stories from India. The Mahabaratha and the Ramayana, elegantly depict eastern philosophies, which inspired many cultures. The Balinese and Javanese have combined the Hindu stories with Buddhist and Muslim ideas and their own folklores. Usually the Mahabaratha and Ramayana mythology, which some of the episodes are purely Indonesian creations that based on the two epics stories, are divided into many different episodes. The Mahabaratha and Ramayana stories are thousands of verses long and only a portion can be performed in one session. The other stories from Indonesian history and myth are occasionally performed. Some favorites include “Kala Rau” or the eclipse of the moon, “Calonarang” that means a call to witches, and “Panji” the Javanese story.

The shadow play, a story telling that carries cultural information is enlighten by the puppet master. The shadow puppet master, in Indonesian

language means “dalang”, delivers the story in the play. The dalang becomes the center of knowledge culture, and history. He manipulates the carved leather figures and the screen to bring the shadow and the story seem to life. In delivering the stories, the dalang manipulates all the figures, interprets characters and uses different voice for each characters, and produces sound effects punctuating speech and movement. The dalang will also sing, cue the musical accompaniment, and speak several languages. The dalang chooses the story that appropriate to the village or to the place sponsoring the performance. The choice is made to illustrate useful moral. In every performance, the dalang will create a script remaining to the original story but adding subplots, new characters or comments on current conditions, there is usually a scene when clowns appear, making jokes, talking about current local events and probably criticizing an institution and he uses the original story to give solutions. Therefore, Dalang must be able to tell the stories as they should be told. If this kind of self-control and knowledge is accomplished, a dalang is considered a professional.

Since the ancient time, Wayang kulit is brought into play to give lots of information to people. For instance, a historical story likes Ramayana which is very common stories in shadow play. Nevertheless, the story are varies from performance to performance, it depends on the puppeteer or dalang. Dalang uses his creativeness and his intelligence to interpret the message of the story. He is the one who in charge in the play, he manages the story, gamelan orchestra, and the play and manipulates the puppets. The unity of the puppets, music, and story telling through the puppet master, make the performance alive.

How Does H.G. Wells Portray Fear in ‘The Red Room’

At the beginning of the ‘Red Room’, the young narrator is playing the role of a very confident and secure person. As the story unfolds, it is clear that the narrator’s assurance and confidence seem to perish. In the opening of the story he speaks as though he does not believe in any of the tales or myths he had been told about the ‘Red Room’ and keeps a very calm and cool voice “It will take a very tangible ghost to frighten me” (P.4). The elderly caretakers seem to be trying their utmost to scare him or put him off going to the room by informing him of all the stories and legends that there are about the ‘Red Room’. The tone of the elderly people’s voices is such that it gives the impression that by setting foot in that room, it will be as imbecilic as suicide “It’s your own choosing” (P.4) says the old woman. Her repetition of this phrase emphasises both his stubbornness and the imminent sense of danger.

Subsequently the old woman then explains that even though the narrator hasn’t ever seen a ghost or a spirit in all his life, this is also the first time that he has ever set foot in this house and therefore hasn’t experienced its inexplicable and supernatural activity before “And eight and twenty years you have lived and never seen the likes of this house, I reckon. There’s a many things to see, when ones still but eight and twenty. A many things to see and sorrow for” (P.4). Also in this line, her use of repetition further emphasises the old woman’s horrific and dire experiences that have been engraved into her mind which she would be happy to forget about.

I feel that the young protagonist starts to experience fear right from the beginning because of what the old people have been revealing to him. He probably did have doubts about going there but did not want to show signs of ‘infirmity’ in front of his social inferiors. There is an early indication of things not being all that they seem when the narrator’s reflection in the mirror is abbreviated and broadened to an impossible sturdiness, (P.4). Perhaps by the end of the story the impossible may become reality.

Buy The Red Room term paper

Already the protagonist’s confidence appears to be waning as he requests that one of the caretakers accompanies him to the site of his lonely vigil. When they refuse he has no choice but to ‘go alone’. But makes sure that their door is ‘wide open’ before he lights his candle; which denotes that he may be frightened of the dark.

As the story proceeds, the narrator becomes more aware of his surroundings and the noises. He gives a very detailed description of the setting and his surroundings because he describe almost every little movement and sound made as a person would when they are afraid “I heard the sound of a stick and a shambling step on the flags in the passage outside, and the door creaked on its hinges as a second old man entered…” (P.4). From this we can already see that the narrator isn’t as calm and confident as he was at the beginning of the story and that his self-assurance is starting to diminish.

The old man again says “It’s your own choosing” now sounding as though he is literally saying ‘don’t go through with it’. I think the narrator picks this up and indicates that he still wants to do it and replies by saying “It’s my own choosing” (P.4).

H.G. Wells’s vivid description of the Gothic setting builds fear and tension throughout the story. An early indication that there is more to the room than can be seen is when the narrator is preoccupied fortifying himself with another drink and is unaware that ‘A monstrous shadow of him crouched upon the wall and mocked his actions as he poured and drank’ (P.44)

The more he was with these people, the more uncomfortable he felt around them. He felt as though they weren’t really human; almost as if there was something inside them controlling them using their flesh and bodies as a disguise.

From the time that I was in the ninth grade until now, my friends and myself have always been at odds about what type of guys we should go out with. Like which guys are considered better than the other is. We are forever at standoff of what our preference is, athletic over intellect or intellect over athletic. Now speaking for myself, I am totally and faithfully (call me shallow if you will) in love with athletes. There is nothing better to me. However many of my friends believe that to get the better man he should be one of intellect. Who says that intellect makes a good man? Furthermore who says that an athlete lacks intellect. From experience I do know that any kind of guy can look sweet and be completely evil, and really thuggish looking guys can be really sweet. ? Since I have had the good fortune to date a variety of guys I think that I will enlighten my friends a little bit.

First of all, athletes are very masculine (muscles on top of muscles), their stamina is excellent, and their bodies are in magnificent shape. However very intelligent guys even though they may lack stamina, are very interesting to converse with. Even though their bodies may not be as masculine as athletes bodies you have to remember they spend most of their time studying, while athletes are continually in the weight room. With guys of intellect I learn something-new everyday, and I look forward to future conversations with them. Though with athletes you more or less find that the conversation seems to always come back to sports. Not that that is a bad thing, but every five minutes it makes you wonder do they think of anything else. Which of course they do, they are continually thinking of ways to show you how wonderful their stamina really is.

Although my friends argue that they only want a man of intellect, I am sure that a nice beautiful body wouldn’t hurt either. Why can it not be a package deal? When all is broken down and really looked upon I can see how they could want a man strictly for intellect. Intellectual men tend to be very well spoken, and seem to be able to engage in all sorts of conversation ranging from mathematics to astronomy and also sports. Truth be told there are some really masculine intellectual men, with great bodies and the perfect personality so I can see how my friends could love only intellectual men.

On the other hand, while in school athletes do have to study hard to keep their grades up, and while they might not be as knowledgeable in some areas of study as other guys may be they are very in tune with whatever sport that they do. Fooling around with an aggressive athlete might get you ruffed up one good time (but who’s counting anyway), and that’s not to say that men of intellect won’t do the same. Furthermore I do not believe the stereotype of dumb jocks. Sure there are some, but there are some really intelligent ones too.

Write your Athletic vs Intelligence research paper

So to all of my friends, I want a guy with a little bit of both. I do not think that one is better than the other is. I just tend to lean more towards the athletes just because they are down right sexy. However intellect has its own sexiness too. There is nothing better then seeing a man reading late at night, or surprising him at his job, because you know he is giving a very intense presentation, and taking him to lunch afterwards. So I say way not go for the best in both worlds get a little of both and call it heaven.

Have you ever wondered how life would be like if mostly everyone was poor? If you only had a few pairs of shirts and pants to wear the whole year? If you never got presents on your birthday, because your family couldn’t afford it? Or if you only had a pair of shoe’s to wear until your feet grew out of them? I have experienced all of this and much worse, in my life during the Great Depression.

My name is Irene Roytman, and I’m 1 years old. I am one of the many people who lived during the Great Depression. The Great Depression was a time of economic collapse from 1-141. It was extremely difficult to find a job during this time. But I managed to find a job. I work as a Live in Maid in Florida. My boss was one of the few people who were wealthy, so he could afford a maid. My job is somewhat difficult, because I work all day and don’t have much time to rest. My job consists of washing the dishes, vacuuming the house, dusting, moping the floor, making the beds, cleaning and organizing all the rooms, cooking, and doing the laundry. I also go to the food store to buy food for my boss and his family. I get paid $60.00 yearly. I have $5.0 to spend per week. I have some good advantages in my job. I don’t have to pay rent, and I don’t have to buy food with my money. That saves up a lot of money.

I am the only person who works in my family. I have two daughters. My oldest one who is 16 is named Mandy, and my younger one who is 1 is named Hallie. I also have a husband who’s name is Danny. My whole family lives with me in my boss’s house. Both of my kids go to school, and get a good education. My husband stays home with me, helping me do my job.

This week has been such a horrifying week. At first, my dear old mother got very sick, so we had to take her to the doctor to cure her. That cost me $1.80. Then I had to go check on her everyday, and she lives 40 minutes away, so I had to take a bus, which cost me $1.40. I didn’t feel like wasting anymore of my money this week, so I walked to her house the next day. It was extremely tiring to walk in the hot blazing sun, but I survived. Then it was my daughters Birthday and I didn’t want to spend any more money this week, since I only had a $1.10 left. I felt very miserable. Then the worst thing happened, I lost my job! My boss who worked as a college teacher got fired. My family and I were very devastated and oblivious of what would happen to us. I decided to call my brother and ask him if he can take us in. He said of coarse. We moved into his house. He lived in Georgia, which was hours away from my old location. That was my terrifying week. Hopefully we will have better luck in this new state, and someone in my family will find a job, but I am very doubtful that will happen.

A child often sees the world in a different perspective than a fully mature adult does. It is easy for one to forget how big the world can look to a young person. Life experiences at such a tender age often shape and mold a person into what he or she becomes as an adult. In the passage from A White Heron, the author uses vivid imagery, elaborate diction, and an innocent point of

view to reveal how awesome and powerful the world and simple life experiences can seem through the eyes of a child.

The imagery present in the passage is abundant and inspiring. Images of the great tree and the view which it provides give a reader the feeling as if he or she is right there with the child. The phrase, dangerous pass from one tree to another, provides a suspenseful moment for the reader as the child seems to dangle helplessly between the two trees. Other statements, such as, The sharp dry twigs caught her and held her and scratched her like angry talons, give more vivid images of the frightening terrain in which the girl finds herself. One of the most stirring phrases is, human spirit creeping and climbing from higher branch to branch. It brings a view that this little

girl is much more than flesh and bone, but a soul full of energy and life, which she is living to the fullest.

Order Custom Essay on The White Heron

Diction plays an important role in this passage. Intense feelings can be roused from just reading a few lines. Where the land was highest, a great pine-tree stood, is a statement in which the author uses words to give the surrounding land a very large feel. The phrase, the great enterprise would really begin, gives the reader the impression that the feat which the child is

about to perform is one of no meager consequence in her eyes. One of the most enrapturing lines is, trembling and tired but wholly triumphant. A reader is given the ability to share the feeling of pride with the girl, along with fatigue that came with the completion of such a large accomplishment for the small child.

The author makes excellent use of point of view in the passage. He is able to place the reader in the shoes of the little girl during her fascinating adventure. In line eight, the phrase, this old pine towered above them all, is used to show the view of the pine tree as the child sees it. A reader takes the place of the small child and sees the tall tree as a looming giant. The statement, whoever climbed to the top of it could see the ocean, further shows how a small child would perceive most everything in the world as quite large. The last line, truly it was a vast and awesome world, reveals the intense effects such a trivial activity could have on a childs outlook on the world. The authors strong grasp of the use of point of view enables even the most unlikely reader to enter into the realm of a child.

Life experiences play such a large role in sculpting a childs development, that even minor ones are very important. The little girl in this passage is able to experience sights most of which the common person will never see. Even though the venture in which she partakes is not considered a great one in many eyes, it is evident that it moves her in a deep and profound way.

Everyone has special qualities about themselves. The better a person knows himself or herself, the better they can assess the areas that require additional personal development. These areas can be divided into specific traits called strengths and weaknesses. In this paper, I will discuss some of my personal strengths and weaknesses; I will also include my plans for improvement and actions I have taken thought out the years to overcome my weaknesses through my strengths.

Speaking front an audience whether, in class room, in public, or at work is on the top of the list of my weaknesses. The problem stems primarily from the fact that English is my second language. This weakness can be broken down into two parts One mastering the language itself, vocabulary, grammar and sentence structuring. People tend to judge our character through the way we present ourselves through speech and ability to present our ideas in comprehensible fashion. My limited vocabulary and pronunciation needs a lot of improvement.

The Second part of the weakness is the fear to stand front an audience, and deliver a speech or a presentation. This weakness is a direct result of earlier part, mastering the language and the ability to deliver a speech are two sides of the same coin. My ability to present my ideas limited by my choice of words then, most likely my audience will not get my point. How can my audience comprehend the concepts I am trying to get across to them if my speech might as well be in a foreign language?

Jessica Brownlee

Survey II

From the late 1th century to World War I, different artistic movements have focused on color as an instrument to transform the conventions of academic painting and propose new artistic visions and new styles.

Color Analysis

Custom writing service can write essays on Survey II

Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night

The painting includes both light and dark blues. Bright yellows, light green, dark green, brown and black. The background comes alive with the bright yellows, greens, and blue. The large stars look like different spirals outlined with greens and whites to bring them out (www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/van Gogh). The combination of blue, green, yellow, and white join together, in my opinion, in a harmonious, wave like motion against the blue sky.

Henri Matisse’s Portrait of Madam

In this portrait, Matisse uses a lot of various colors. The background is green on the right side of the painting. The left side is purple in the top left side of the painting. The bottom left side is orange. Her hair is black and blue. The green and red are complimentary colors. The green gets darker to lighter starting from the neck going up. The purple gets darker to lighter starting from the upper left corner. On the left side the orange and purple repeat the colors of the dress.

Paul Cezannes’s The Blue Vase

The colors include blue, green, orange, brown, white. The blue vase is contrasted by the earth toned table. During the 180s Cezanne’s palette, based on shades of blue, green and earth tone, gradually become more fluid and more transparent (Sproccati, 1).

Pollution and its Effects

Pollution can be a harmful substance for our environment. It is a major problem all over the world. Pollution not only damages the environment, but damages us also. It can cause many problems ranging from lung cancer to the greenhouse effect. Pollution is all around us, but we continue to avoid the problem. What are the reasons behind this? Automobiles, the post-consumer market, and businesses cause pollution.

Automobiles are one of the many causes of pollution. A polluting effect of cars is the heat it creates from the exhaust. The toxic fumes given off as a byproduct of engines are slowly damaging our lungs and our atmosphere. The exhaust is extremely toxic to human beings. But why do we do continue to drive these pollution devices? Some people will say it is progress, but the majority of people drive cars for the convenience. Why walk four miles in four hours when you can drive the same distance in four minutes?

Another source of pollution is the post-consumer market. American citizens throw away millions of tons of garbage each year, and this trash has to go somewhere. While there are projects to clean and reuse trash, most of it gets dumped into huge landfills. “Landfills are disgusting blisters on our countrys landscape. But people continue to consume and throw away more and more in the name of convenience”. (1)(Pg.6) As people see it, when things get old, throw it away and get a new one. People blame the government for the trash problem, but the blame should be placed on them.

The last great source of pollution lays in the businesses. Although not common,

businesses have been known to dump their waste products into streams, lakes, and rivers. Each time a company pollutes the environment there are horrible consequences to pay. “Mutations, destroyed ecosystems, and human death have all occurred as a direct result of illegal dumping. It contaminates our drinking water and soil. It causes entire communities of humans (not to mention animals) to move on to new places not to return for at least a century”. () Not only do companies dump chemicals, but also hot water. This hot water kills most life it comes into contact with, but also causes an overgrowth of algae that covers the surface of the lake, or pond, and blocks the light from reaching the bottom. “This means the plant life cannot grow, which means the small bacteria and other microorganisms cant grow which means fish cant feed which means the ecosystem dies”. ()

Pollution like any other problem can be solved, but it is a long process. Individuals can do their part to save the environment as well as themselves. Instead of driving, carpool, take the bus or any other method of mass transit. This will cut down on pollution made by cars each year, not to mention your gas bill. When it comes to the trash problem, take the time to sort your trash and place it in the appropriate recycling bins. By recycling we reduce the amount of waste piled

into the landfills. “As for consumption, pay attention to how the products you buy are manufactured and how they are packaged. Avoid those products made in unfriendly ways towards our mother earth. If a product encourages the destruction of land, or is of completely no use dont buy it”. () If each individual did their part, we would have a cleaner place to live.

Paper One

In 17, Philip K. Zimbardo, a psychology professor at Stanford University began researching how prisoners and guards internalize submissive and authoritarian roles. He placed an ad in the newspaper seeking male college students needed for a study of prison life. The experiment would last for only two weeks and they would get paid $15 per day. The ad attracted seventy-five responses, but only twenty-one were selected. The men were divided into two groups Prisoners and Guards. They were warned that as prisoners of this experiment their privacy and other rights would be violated, as well as being harassed.

Zimbardo’s goal for this experiment was to find out the period in which the prisoners and guards become controlling and passive. In order to do this he had to set up a mock prison. The prisoners were given the same smocks to wear, lived in cells, and were given ID numbers. The guards were assigned identical uniforms, and were given billy clubs, whistles, handcuffs, and keys to all the cells and the main gate to show a sign of power they had over the prisoners. The guards had no training in how to handle their jobs, but caught on. In a real prison, guards don’t go through any training on how to treat the prisoners; they go by instinct. The prisoner’s quarters were small, and windowless; they never knew if it was day or night outside. At 10 P.M. it was time to lockup, and all privileges were denied. The mock prison was designed in order to bring out the psychological aspects of imprisonment. The prisoners were given sixteen basic rules to follow that would be followed. There were hidden video cameras and microphones that recorded the prisoners and guards conversations.

The first day of the experiment went by very smoothly. On the morning of the second day a riot broke loose; the prisoners barricaded themselves in their cells by putting their beds against the doors, and began to curse at the guards. The guards decided to take action and got a “fire extinguisher that shot skin-chilling carbon dioxide” and threatened the prisoners, forcing them to move away from the doors. The guards stripped the prisoners, took their beds, and harassed them. They knew if they wanted to take over the prison again, they had to put their foot down. From that moment on the prisoners were controlled by the guards.

The psychological impact of the experiment on the subjects became obvious immediately. The experiment turned into a complicated game to the young men and they started to lose sight of reality. The prisoners started seeing themselves as actual prisoners and thought only of escape. They fell into a depression and some prisoners actually cried. Some even stopped yelling back at the guards and began to obey them. The guards, also, fell quickly into their roles of power. The guards actually began to harass the prisoners and yelled at them. At one point a prisoner would not eat and the guard began shoving food into the prisoner’s face. The subjects became the roles they where given.

The two-week experiment was cut short to six days because the men got so engrossed in their characters. The experiment ended up not only proving that humans are quick to behave and act how they are told they should behave and act but also the aggressive nature dormant in most people. Dr. Zimbardo realized the significance of the experiment. He pointed out that if these men who where supposed to be the cream of the crop would so quickly fall into the parts they where given, then actual prisoners and guards under actual circumstances would undergo much worse. The experiment was cut

to an end as well as the research of Phillip K. Zimbardo.
