Prejudice is a complicated thing. It has been around for many years. In fact, I’m sure it’s been around since the beginning of time. Its human nature to be jealous of someone, or scared of someone, or hurtful to someone, just because they are different than you. There are many different kinds of prejudice but, I think the most common form of prejudice is racism.


I believe racism stems from many different things. One is the way, we, as a people, have been raised. Think about your family traditions. You have stories, holidays, mementos, and ideas passed down from generation to generation. Well if early in your family line, there was someone that was racist, and passed on those beliefs through your family, they would eventually get to you -So then those racist beliefs would be very relevant in your life. It would be taught to you when you were young, that everyone that wasn’t like you was bad, or stupid, or just “lower in society.” Granted, most people nowadays make their own decisions on what they want to believe, but it wasn’t always like that. Your family can have a major influence on you- sometimes, whether you like it or not.


I think that where you live also plays a part in racism. If you grow up in a very mixed diversity of people, I think some people have less chance of developing a prejudice against other races. If you grew up in the same culture and shared some of the same beliefs, then maybe people would look at everybody the same. One would think this would be the case all the time, but unfortunately, its not. No matter how much someone might not care about racism, someone will always get in the way. This is especially true for kids, because young kids don’t have any grasp on the issue, and it just doesn’t matter to them. For example, if you were to look at little kids playing at recess, there would be mixed diversity of races. No racial conflicts are relevant. It’s when the parents get into it, things get screwed up.


After childhood though, you do make your own beliefs, but sometimes they are hard to control. There could be someone completely against racism, but one incident could change their whole prospective. This leads to stereotyping. Let’s say a girl was harassed by a certain race of people, and this emotionally or physically hurt the girl. Well from that day forward, she could look at anyone of that race as an enemy. I’m sure this type of thing happens a lot.
