Dante and Pope Nicholas III

Throughout the poem, Dante takes a pilgrim into the hell for revealing to him the very nature of sin. As Dante travels through this dreadful region, he retains those qualities that he has always possessed on earth. And, he also displays a diversity of emotions ranging from pleasure, to pity, to sympathy, to horror and disgust. However, Canto 1 is especially significant as Dante showed his first abhorrence to the souls discriminating all sympathy towards sinners in Hell in previous Cantos. This change in Dantes behavior serves less to illumine Dante as a character and more to make moral statements.

Dante and Virgil now are at the third pit, wherein are punished those who have been guilty of simony. These are fixed with the head downward in certain apertures, so that no more of them than the legs appear without, and on the soles of their feet are seen burning fires. Dante is taken down by his guide into the bottom of the pit; and there finds Pope Nicholas III, whose evil deeds, together with those of other pontiffs, are bitterly reprehended.

The sinner that Dante address is Pope Nicholas III, the main sinner in the pit who was a corrupt pope, according to Dante. Dante was mistaken as Boniface, and after realizing he was not, Pope Nicholas III tells his story. The Pope also foresees an even more corrupt pope, Boniface, and later on Boniface Clement V without repenting himself first.

Dante harshly rebukes the Pope for the response. Dantes song about simony (0-117) is a very important moment in The Inferno and perhaps Dantes longest, most impassioned speech to one of the damned. Canto 1 is significant since it illustrates Dante¡¯s first abhorrence of the corruption of the church that he held so dear and truly. At that moment, Dante learns how to rebuke and despise sin rather than just feel sympathy for the suffering sinners due to anguish punishments which are part of Gods divine justice.

While Dante rebukes the sinner, he once mentions about Constantine and tells that Dante would not blame his sin of conversion of religion compared to what the pope has committed during his life as a corrupted pope, in fact, Dante thinks the Emperor Constantine made a huge mistake since he gave so much of his property to his pope for healing his leprosy, any since then, all the following Popes became corrupted and greedy.

In this Canto, Dante feels absolutely no pity for Pope Nicholas III, as he did with many sinners at the beginning of his journey, and in fact, launches into an angry and damns him further. Dante clearly finds the sinners in this pit disgraceful enough to pause in the narrative for a moment and to berate. The matter of simony is such an important issue to Dante. He was religious person and faithful to his God. Dante could not bear to see those people who sold their beliefs for more money and totally intimidated the holiness of church with many sacrileges. Dante condemns the Catholic Churchs exchange of spiritual services for cash, especially in the granting of indulgences and in the reduction of penance. Dante also resembles by his personal memory from a number of years earlier when he saved a boy in a baptismal font by smashing it after seeing those simonists up-side down in holes.
