A BRIEF HISTORY OF MATHS

Maths/ICT Specific Task Pete Godber

The Ancient Egyptians developed a system of numbers in the third millenium BC as did the Sumerians (of Modern Iraq). Both civilisations used versions of abacus. The Chinese developed their numbers about a thousand years later. In 876 BC, a symbol for zero was invented in India.

However, when we think of ancient mathematicians, most people remember the Greeks. This is because maths was central to their way of life. The Greeks used maths to find out more about the world around them. Pythagoras was not only a mathematician but a philosopher and religious leader.

After Diophantus of Alexandria wrote the first book on Algebra, in 10 AD, western mathematics went into decline for many years. Elsewhere, in India, the decimal system was developed in about 600 AD. The work of the Greeks was kept safe and enlarged upon by the Mohammedans of Northern Africa, who were far more tolerant to novel ways of thinking than the Christians of the time. However, what was not tolerated by Islam was pictures. In order to decorate their walls Muslims began to develop pattern. As their patterns became more intricate so did their maths. The greatest Mohammedan mathematician was Muhammad al-Khwarizmi who combined algebra and the decimal system.

At the beginning of the 1th Century the first signs of the Renaissance, still 00 years away, could be seen in the work of Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci. Fibonacci studied rabbits breeding and noticed a pattern that can be traced throughout nature. Indeed Fibonaccis series is related to the golden ratio (which the Ancient Greeks had discovered and used to design their temples and artefacts). During the Renaissance all these strands were pulled together and a chain of discoveries from trigonometry (1550) through logarithms (1614), probability theory (1654), the binary system and calculus (167), and the first calculator (18), to mention a few, have led directly to the production of the computer that I write this on today.

Graduation speeches are a little tough. I cant honestly say I remember the one given at my graduation, nor do I have any illusions that you will remember much of this one. Perhaps the most famous graduation speech, one many of you may have heard of, was given by Winston Churchill in the twilight of his life. Churchill - a terrible student who needed three years just to finish the eighth grade - was asked to give the commencement address at Oxford, one of Englands most prestigious universities. When introduced, Churchill walked to the podium, took off this hat, looked over the assembled students and simple said never give up. Churchill then proceeded to pick up this hat and sit down. Still good advice, but clearly Im no Winston Churchill, and you all are not going to be that lucky today.

where your cap lands is entirely up to you.

But look, I know some of you are thinking Great, find the music and get out… but, what about day to day. Let me share some things that I think you can count on every single day. Some universal principles that I hope youll recognize and take to heart as you undertake this work of engaging the world. These are the things I like to call The Constants.

President Bush, early in his career as Governor of Texas, first talked about these constants. They were his northstars, the things that defined how he was going to live his life. These constants, these northstars, are as relevant and a valuable today as when he first spoke of them. So if you take nothing else form my comments today, remember

One Treat people with dignity and respect. Try to understand them, learn about them. Its what they want and what they deserve.

Two While you listen to others, give yourself the same courtesy. Trust your instincts and dont be afraid of either failure or success.

Three Dont lie, cheat, or steal. Sounds like an obvious one, but too often were tempted to cut corners. I recently read a story about a Native American tribal leader describing his own inner struggles. He said, There are two dogs inside me. One of the dogs is mean and evil. The other dog is good. The mean dog fights the good dog all the time. Someone asked him which dog usually wins and after a moments reflection, he answered, The one I feed the most. The point is doing the right thing gets easier the more often you do it.

Four Families are the foundation for our society. In our families we find love. We find strength. We learn values. Take care of your family. Appreciate them. Families must endure forever.

So in a little while, when the celebration starts, pick up your cap from the ground and dust it off. Take the time to look your family and friends in the eyes. Smile. And then look around. This is the beginning of your time, your life. Trust yourself. Everyone here is proud of you for taking the time to dream, and for working hard to make that dream a reality....

In preparation for my first commencement address, I read commencement speeches made by famous individuals, I read essays and short stories. Looking for what to say.

Let me be the first to congratulate you tonight on such an important accomplishment.

Well…I know you’re sitting and waiting patiently for that diploma…like I did 18 years ago….wishing that the commencement speaker would “hurry it up already” and thinking about that trip to Port Aransas or wherever you’re planning to go with your friends this weekend.

Well…I hope I can keep your attention for a bit anyway…I will try to be brief so that you can get on with more important things…

What a fantastic day this is for you!!! You have achieved a milestone in your life that NO ONE can ever take away from you. 1 years of work---HARD WORK---, 1 years of memories and friends that are yours, for free…forever. Be sure to store those memories away like precious treasure…you will need them from time to time as you look back on your time in this place. That treasure is JUST as important as that piece of paper you’re getting soon.

BUT…isn’t it strange that the diploma you’re about to receive tonight only has your name on it? I would ask you to reflect this evening about who else’s name belongs on it…at least on the back…in fine print maybe!!!

THANK GOD every chance I get for them and what they did for me…I guess the old man has learned even more in 18 years since I graduated…..so, be sure as you walk across this stage tonight that you are not alone…..your parents, grandparents, siblings, extended family, teachers, preachers and many others are with you as you reach for that diploma.

As I was preparing for tonight, I read several commencement speeches from a variety of people…and one common theme that I found in them was how each one talked about their career or life’s work and how they got there…WELL, I’m sure you don’t want to hear about my meanderings in the field of microbiology and chasing some virus over the last 18 years…(my wife just loves when I start talking bacteria and viruses with my 6 year old daughter, Haley)…so I’ll spare you that topic and just share with you a few thoughts on what I think can lead to a chance at success, whether it be college, an immediate career, or even just hanging out at your parents house for

In the morning you awoke to find that your truck had not one, not two, surely not three, but four flat tires! You realize that the night before you were out four-wheeling in the Arizona desert with a truck equipped with radial tires. If only you would have known the simple fact that radial tires will be severely damaged if used when four-wheeling. I heard this over and over with my one year working at Discount Tire Company from many customers. Working at Discount Tire Company has helped me learn how important it is to help customers pick the right tire for him or her. There are three types of tires to choose from ranging in size and price. Understanding which type of tire to choose from will help you help you tread in the direction you want, with the benefits of the type of tire you might need.

First, you have your every day radial tire. Radial tires are made for every day street use and are constructed of steel belts in a rubber compound. These tires cannot be used off-road or severe damage to the tire may result. Radials are mainly used on your every day car and can be used on trucks so long as they stay on the road. The radial tire you choose will be determined first by size then by benefits. Once size is determined then we move on to the benefits of the radial tire. Radials have good wet/dry traction which is rated by a grading system to help you choose the right one for many different road conditions. The lower the grade, the longer the tread life but some handling will be sacrificed. One example would be a radial with an S which will have less handling and stopping power as compared to on with a letter Z. Radials also are customized for different weather conditions to help you tailor one for your exact needs. Another benefit is that radial tires are made for a more comfortable, quieter, and smoother ride. Determining what combination of benefits you would like in your radial, will determine the price of that tire. Naturally a tire with better benefits will cost more than a radial with fewer benefits. If you’re the type that does a great deal of traveling on the road, then radials are the way to go.

Second we have the off-road tire. Off-road tires have a combination of steal belts with a nylon construction in a rubber compound. Your off-road tire is made just for that, but no damage will result if used on the street. Off-road tires are mainly for trucks, but can be fitted onto cars. These tires provide excellent wet/dry traction off-road. The tires can traverse in mud, sand, and over rocks that would normally stop a radial in its’ tracks. Another great benefit of the off-road tire is that they can handle bigger loads than radials. The tires also have a longer tread life and are considerably louder if driven on the street due to the tread design. Off-road tires can be made quieter, but as stated before, the benefits will be dictated by price and size of the tire. If you know that you will be spending time off the road, then these tires are for you.

Third and foremost is the performance tire. Performance tires are made up of a nylon construction, have a steel cap, and are incased in a rubber compound. These tires are for street use only. The tires provide the best traction on wet/dry surfaces of any radial. Unlike radials, some performance tires have the ability to be run flat, if air pressure is lost due to a puncture. The performance tire also has a short tread life, which is sacrificed for a softer rubber to help grip the road providing the best handling and stopping available in all types of road conditions. In addition, the softer rubber gives you a very quite but bumpier ride associated with the low profiles that performance tires have. Another great benefit of performance tires is that they have the greatest speed rating available of any of the other two types mentioned. Because these tires also range in size and have many benefits, they have the greatest amount of costs associated with them. If you feel the need for performance, then the performance tire is definitely the right choice.

Next time you wake up, you’ll be assured that you will have not one, not two, surely not three, but four good tires to help you tread in the direction you want.

‘Fear is a complex emotion’ says Hugh Mackay in the article “Be afraid of those who go for war too easily” from The Age. This article focuses on the issue of terrorism and the so called “war against terrorism”. The article is jam packed with persuasive techniques. Perhaps the most frequently used technique is the use of alliteration and repetition.

He begins the article discussing the federal election, and ties it to the concept of fear by saying the following.

It is an extraordinary thought that a federal election campaign in a country like Australia - remote, peaceful, tolerant (though decreasingly so), hospitable (though decreasingly so), safe, secure and prosperous - could be hijacked by hatred and fear.

The clever use of metaphors such as ‘hijacked by hatred and fear’ is linked to the main subject of terrorism and conjures up images in the readers mind. Hugh Mackay uses analogy and strong emotive words when referring to Australia and it’s government. He describes Australia using positive words; While using negative words such as unpopular, divisive and high-taxing to describe the government. Even when saying positive things about Australia he writes ‘though decreasingly so’ in parenthesis, in reference to the tolerance and hospitality of Australia. This lays all the blame on the government, and makes his opinions of the government fairly clear.

While the authorities are thought to be the main contributing factor, Hugh Mackay focuses on the idea of fear also playing a strong part. He stuns the reader with his use of wild, vivid adjectives and causes the reader to think more carefully on the issue. He uses scintillating alliterations such as ‘freaked by their fear’ to draw the reader’s attention, persuade them to read on and provide an indirect lead to the next paragraph.

At the beginning of the article he does not it make it exactly clear what the article is about, but rather leaves little hints to make the reader think and read on. In the second paragraph, he goes on talk about fear being a complex emotion, but only gives two main examples of fear as to keep the article brief and interesting. He uses the concept of fear itself as an indirect lead to the fear of terrorism. In the first half of the article the mood is colloquial and comparative. Hugh Mackay’s style heavily uses imagery and symbolism. His main strategy is to control the focus and the thoughts of the reader, by doing this he can control the direction in which the reader thinks. He literally invites the reader into the article by presenting the argument on a personal, second person point of view level. He is basically trying to say ‘listen to me, because i’m on your side’.

The structure of the article is well set out and is clearly broken up into three sections. It allows Hugh Mackay to outline the problem; allocate the blame and then finally offer a solution. Hugh Mackay flows smoothly between paragraphs and always uses a good lead to progress to the next section. This theme is maintained while extending the progression of the argument. As the main argument begins to develop, Hugh Mackay uses colloquial language with two consecutive rhetorical questions in the same sentence to provide a breathing space in the argument. It causes the reader to stop, and think about the possible answers, giving way to the construction of a new section.

His language use and choice of words are of a high standard aiming at older readers who are well educated. Sophisticated words like amorphous, divisive and conventional outline his use of language. Imagery plays a strong part in the making of this argument. Imagery is mostly portrayed via the use of metaphors. Words such as paralysed, freaked and hijacked all give the sense of danger and possible distress. Later on in the article, Hugh Mackay exaggerates the use of imagery. He strongly outlines the idea of death, blood, devastation and suffering. This use of imagery depicts the negative side of war. By attacking the readers conscience in this way, he makes a successful attempt to show that war is bad.

The rhythm and movement of the argument is shifted up a gear when Hugh Mackay deploys ‘Be afraid’ at the start of each sentence. This is a crystal clear example of repetition. Hugh Mackay states that we should ‘Be afraid of those who present a complex truth as if it is simple.’ This suggests that we are only being shown a small portion of the big picture. He also says that we should

Be afraid of the motives of a federal minister recklessly announcing Australia ranks third in the world as a terrorism target, as if out fears needed refueling...and as if some terrorist had mailed him a hit-list.

This suggests that we are being exploited for political gain. If we get “paralysed by fear” at the thought of terrorism, and then we get told that we are participating in a glorious war dedicated to stopping the threat of terrorism in it’s tracks, we are likely to support the idea.

While focusing on fear and generally mocking the government, Hugh Mackay mentions the federal election campaign at the start, middle and end of the article. This strategy ties the election campaign remotely to the main argument. His title suggests that we should be afraid of the government, because they are the ones going for war too easily. So in a sense he is saying war is bad, and the government is evil because they are declaring war too easily, so be careful who you vote for in the election.

Please note that this sample paper on “Be afraid of those who go for war too easily” By Hugh Mackay is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Vietnam War

The Vietnam War was America’s longest and most controversial war. The Vietnam War was the longest war in which the US took part in and lasted from 157 to 175. 58,000 Americans were killed and it cost America about 150 billion dollars to cover the cost of the war. The North Vietnamese aided rebels who opposed the government of the south. Due to the fact that the North Vietnamese were a communist the Americans felt threatened. The United States thought they could easily defeat the North Vietnamese due to their superior weaponry and training, but they were mistaken. The North Vietnamese used guerilla warfare tactics, which gave them the advantage and leveled the playing field.

In 1857 the French sent troops into Indo-China to protect missionaries. Eventually the French colonized Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. In 1 Ho Chi Minh was inspired to create a communist organization to fight for freedom. During World War II Germany occupied France so they were no longer able to protect their colonies. With help of U.S. weapons and Minh tried to resist being taken over by the Japanese. When Japan surrendered to the US Minh seized the opportunity to control the government. On September , 145 the Democratic Republic of Vietnam declared its independence. US officials supported Minh because at the time they believed the Japanese were more of a threat.

In what some call the “First” Vietnam War the French attempted to regain control of their old colony. On September , 145 the French landed troops on Vietnam. Relying on guerilla warfare Minh used stealth and surprise to gain advantages. Seven and a half years later Minh finally brought the French to their knees. US officials believed in a domino theory. The US was convinced communism was a monolithic evil inspired by the Soviet Union. According to the theory unless Asian countries received US help they would fall under communism. Communist Chine recognized Ho Chi Minh and as a result Vietnam selected China as one of its allies.

The United States tried to find a way of defeating North Vietnam without sending troops. They first tried to send supplies, planes, tanks, and guns, to South Vietnamese president Ngo Dinh Diem. When that was unsuccessful President Kennedy sent 15,000 “Special Forces” to help teach Diem’s army how to fight Minh’s rebels.

The draft system was one of the most controversial aspects of the war. Every man in the US was required to register for the draft when he turned 18. For the first few years deferments were available to married men, students, and those with health problems. Some burned their draft cards or fled to Canada while others sought out doctors who would grant them a medical excuse. 8%of the men who served in Vietnam were African American even thought African Americans only made up 10% of the population.

American troops had the most modern technology available. They were armed with fully automatic M-16 rifles. US transport plans were armed with machine guns that fired 18,000 rounds per minute. The US also had helicopters, fighter planes, and huge B-5 bombers to patrol the skies. In the water they had destroyers, tankers, and patrol boats. US troops received some luxuries to make them feel more comfortable. They were given medicine, surgical equipment, canned and packaged food, boots, jungle fatigues, toothpaste, shaving kits, movie projectors, air conditioners, tape decks, and live entertainers.

Tet is the Vietnamese New Years on January 0. During this time in the year of 168 the North and South called a seize fire for Tet. The North decided that this would be a perfect time for a surprise attack. Viet Cong soldiers went to the US headquarters in Saigo and started shooting. The Viet Cong captured Hue, a major city. 10,000 Marines fought for their lives in Khe Sanh. Corporal James Hebron recalled the battle; “the ground shaking underneath you-and you bouncing into the air, trenches would shake.” After a long battle the Marines held the city of Khe Sanh. The Americans suffered 4,00 deaths and 16,000 wounded while the North Vietnamese, Viet Cong, suffered 45,000 deaths and 100,000 wounded.

A misconception that many people have about the Vietnam War is that all the soldiers used drugs. A 16 study showed that only % of US soldiers were using marijuana. Heroin use spread within a small group of soldiers. A soldier could get a dose of heroin for - dollars. During the long war the North Vietnamese captured many American soldiers as POW’s. Most POW’s were Navy or Airforce pilot’s shot down over enemy territory. POW’s were supposed to only reveal their name, rank, military serial number, and date of birth but interrogators tried to get out vital information about American plans. Those who refused to tell were tortured or placed in solitary confinement. Air Force Major Konrad W. Trautman descries a common torture, “they wold tie both elbows together behind the back, the they would put their feet on your shoulder blades and then pull your arms.”

While War raged on in Vietnam on the home front many people disagreed with the US for sending troops into Vietnam. A war of words developed between pro-war hawks and anti-war doves. Fathers whose sons dodged the draft disowned their sons. Early in 168 America was tearing apart, violence about civil rights and anti-war. In April of 168 when Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated riots in black communities began to break out. Soldiers who fought side by side began to rethink things. College students were especially opposed to the draft. Student’s opposition to the draft increased when Johnson made college students with low grade first to be eligible. One of the more famous incidents was at Kent St. University in May of 170. Allison Krause and others were killed while protesting the war, 11 others were injured. The Vietnam War was one of the most controversial wars of all time and although many disagree with the US’s reasons for going to war that can not bring back the thousands that were killed in this long, bloody war.

Sentimental, melancholy, flowery prose insinuated into tortuous, convoluted, Olympic-worthy sentences which test and vex the very soul of the unsuspecting novice to the Irish storytelling is only part of the tale. For anyone who has ever mentally back-peddled furiously through F. Scott Fitzgerald, attempting to follow or even find the main point of a thirty-six word sentence, the joy is found in the journey itself. The plot, the climax, the resolution and even the moral of the story all pales in importance before the sheer power of the written word and the utter charm of an Irish story. The plot may depart from all sense of linear construction as it refuses to march woodenly from point A to point B. In fact, it may circle all points with reckless abandon, and neglect to provide even a whisper of a resolution. Again and again, the reader is invited to simply relax and enjoy the ride and admire the verbal scenery along the way. For the reader who prefers all his literary ducks in regimented rows, be advised to avoid the Irish, where the mundane becomes the absurd, where meaning is elusive, and where the simplest act or expression is exaggerated beyond all realistic expectation. Although Irish stories can stretch the outer boundaries of verbosity, and weary even the most steadfast, they are remarkable in their propensity for surprising, delighting and captivating the reader. Much of the charm of this genre can be attributed to its’ liberal use of absurdity, exaggeration, hyperbole and outright Blarney. In spite of our firmest rational resolve, the reader is lured far from reason and logic and plunged headlong into the ridiculous world of gross embellishment and overstated drama that defines the Irish writer.

The Irish have a fine sense of the ridiculously impossible and illogical. No Irish author worth his salt has ever let the accuracy of an event or situation affect the power of a well-told story. In short, a tale need not be technically true in order for it to be stressed as true and reliable. Ask the Irish storyteller as to the reality of his statements and don’t be astonished when he adopts a wounded countenance and assures you that he has nothing but the deepest affinity for truth in its purest form. We see this clearly portrayed in the following excerpt from Padraic O Conaire’s “My Little Black Ass” when the proud owner of a donkey describes its attributes.

…if you gave him a scrap of oats in the morning he’d

put some of it aside for fear it might be scarce the

one word.’ Somebody laughed. The tinkerman turned

on him. ‘What are you laughing at, you halfwit? He’s

that intelligent that he sets some of his oats aside. Isn’t

it often enough I was so short myself that I had to steal

a little of his? Only for that ass we’d often go hungry-

myself and my twelve daughters…(67)

Even though we are all well aware of the fact that the tinkerman’s description of the donkey’s abilities is grossly absurd, we are able to appreciate it as the Irish art of embellishing the truth. The fact that some man would dare to insinuate that the tinkerman was altering reality is horribly offensive to him. Not only is this immense exaggeration of the truth accepted amongst the Irish it is practically insisted upon.

It is completely unsatisfactory to the Irish author to state that “the girl held a red rose.” To the non-Irish, it should be obvious that a girl holding a red rose is a simple statement and should be accepted as such. To the sons of Erin, however, such a nondescript, fact-oriented, passionless, verbally-challenged blasphemy of a sentence would not occasion even a nod. At the very least, the red rose should be crimson, or scarlet or blood red. And how could a girl only be a girl, when everyone in the village had seen the wraith, the vision in grey, the shameless French-educated trollop clutching the emblem of her infidelity with their very own God-given eyes. In James Stephen’s “The Triangle” we see this type of exaggerated portrayal unmistakably revealed while Stephens is giving us the insight to Mrs. Morrissy’s feelings towards her husband. While many authors would have plainly stated that the woman was irritated and bored with her husband; Stephens, in true Irish fashion, overstates this detail in nine paragraphs of enormously hilarious depictions. “A permanent husband is a bore, and we do not know what to do with him. He cannot be put on a shelf. He cannot be hung on a nail. He will not go out of the house. There is no escape from him, and he is always the same” (71-). Here Stephens has magnificently managed to give us the impression that not only does Mrs. Morrissy feel as though she is being held prisoner in her marriage but she is so detached from her husband that she likens him to a material object. Stephens goes even farther in his exaggerated description of Mr. Morrissy

Indeed, she could not look anywhere without seeing her

husband. He was included in every landscape. His

moustaches and the sun rose together. His pyjamas

dawned with the moon. When the sea roared so did he,

and he whispered with the river and the wind. He was in

the picture but was out of the drawing. He was in the song

but was out of tune. He agitated her dully, surreptitiously,

unceasingly (7).

Stephens’ use of analogies to further illustrate Mrs. Morrissy’s opinion of her husband is yet another Irish trick of exaggerating something beyond its normal bounds.

Closely related to exaggeration, the use of the hyperbolic overstatement is a formidable tool indeed in the hands of the Irish bard. High drama requires the boldest, most audacious stroke of the pen if the audience is to be suitably impressed. This literary technique is not for the fainthearted, the firmly grounded or the stark realist the most fanciful, the highest degree, the ultimate expression can and MUST be used if the reader is to carry away the sentiment, the mood and the raw emotion of the writer. Italics, bold font and underlined words cannot possible suffice for the Gaelic wordsmith; the most outrageously theatrical particle of language must be searched for and employed.

This insistence on a literary “throwing of the excess” is more commonly known in Ireland and among certain Irish-American circles as the gift of blarney when it is directed toward the object of one’s romantic desire.

Whether hopelessly in love, desperately unhappy or furiously engaged in commerce, the characters in Irish stories leave a lasting impression. From the sheer literary audacity of Irish storytelling, we become immersed in their superlatives, and depressed to the point of suicide with their pain. There is no happy medium, and perhaps we find our own sense of exaggerated absurdity as we overstate their charm. Can we ever again be only mildly aggravated? Can we return to a state of subtle infatuation, or become somewhat agitated, or almost envious? Hardly. If there exists even a microscopic particle of long-forgotten Irish blood in our veins, the very lightest exposure to the excess of Irish authors will call us back to our ancient love of an outrageous story. We’ll shed copious tears in our pints as we lament our own lost loves and gnash our teeth at the abominable outrage perpetuated on the home country at the hands of the monstrously diabolical and black-hearted Brits. We may even stand on wobbly legs to sing ten or eleven stanzas of a haunting Gaelic melody if the mood is right. At least until a friend taps us on the shoulder with a warning to “Stifle the Blarney!” In the end, you can only get away with bottomless emotion and shameful exaggeration in genuine Irish stories, mores the pity.

Worley’s Words

Have you ever seen the effects of being bigger than what is considered normal?

You may have stopped at a local restaurant, ran into someone at the grocery store, or just seen someone at the drive thru. The point is no matter what you’re opinion about them is, there are some out here who feel completely comfortable the way they are. Mary Ray Worley, author of “Fat and Happy In defense of Fat Acceptance” is one of the many who are becoming proud of their bodies, no matter what size or shape they are. The article states many ideas from the author on how to be fat and happy.

Worley tries to give the desired effect of making the reader feel like her ideas are something so far-fetched that they are just crazy enough to work. However, even though Worley is entitled to her own opinion, she comes off as entirely too confident in her new “lifestyle”. It’s almost as if just having acceptance for your body size is all you need in order to have confidence or that sense of higher self esteem you couldn’t normally get. Although that may work for some people, there are some of us out here who are more emotionally tangled with the fact of being overweight or having a less than perfect body shape.

Worley placed too much reference on the fact that people who are fat are morbidly depresses. At least that’s the tone I get from her article. That no one who is under her and her NAAFA affiliates views are so despondent about their body image that they have trouble functioning in society. It’s way too extreme. There are multiple levels of what a person can feel about his or her body. It can be anywhere from the depression and unsociable acts described to just being pissed off that some guy called you “tubby”.

Worley’s attitude would almost seem to be full of adamancy. However, she lets herself be portrayed as someone who, though she wants acceptance for those like her, makes herself out to be persecuting those who can’t accept her mindset. Even though it may be causing her to re-evaluate and live a happier life, there are some of us who just want to be healthier, or lose weight for medical reasons.

Even though she has good reason to pitch her opinions, she came off as more of an icon for NAAFA. As if she were there mascot, she kept going into a lot of detail about her own lifestyle, more than those of the others around her who accepted it. This would have been more effective in making the article more interesting. Her optimism is well appreciated, but I found it to be a bit overdone. She doesn’t know what the future holds for her well being, it’s good to be in high hopes, but she acts as a fortuneteller who can see that anyone who lives the way she does can live a lot happier. It takes will and determination to live either with acceptance or with struggle against any problem

What is fat to Worley, anyways? She never really gave her own weight or the average weight of the people she was describing in her article. It leaves a lot to the imagination about what she considers to be fat. Does this mean that people who are slightly overweight shouldn’t go that extra mile to try and shed the pounds? If she had been more specific, such as people who were in a range of weight, it could have helped the reader get a better idea of what kind of persons were specifically unhappy with their weight, because most likely those who are morbidly obese need to lose that weight, so that they don’t have health complications.

In the end, no matter how admirable Worley’s complaints/arguments are, she fails to incorporate that there are many ways to live, and be happy. Had she not been so dead set on trying to sale one state of mind, her article may have been more effective. You get the feeling of all or nothing when you read her work, and some things in the world aren’t that black and white. Not every “fat” person should feels the same way about why they are fat, what they want to do about being fat, or even that they want to stay fat. Instead of making it feel like a set of rules, Worley should have made it seem more like guidelines to take tips from.

“Nice play xxxxxx! Way to go kid.” Those were the words of my High school baseball coach, after I made a beautiful play deep in the hole at second base. Which turned out to be a game saving play. We were in the midst of a conference championship race and this was a huge game, with everything to gain, and everything to loose. Despite all of the pressure, and stress I had about playing in a huge game, I was up to the challenge. I have learned some very valuable lessons through out my years involved in sports. I learned that sports, really bring out the best in people, it allows people to succeed on the field or court, and feel good about them selves, and carry that into the work force. Sports also show one to deal with the agony of defeat and how to go about tough losses and hear break. It can bring out work ethic in people that they can potentially carry into the working world, it can teach one how to prepare for certain tasks at hand, and most of all it shows one how to raise their confidence and to just have fun in life. To me, sports are truly the greatest thing in the world, and with out it, many people would be lost in the world, my self-included. With out sports, I don’t know what I would do with my self. They are so much fun and great exercies and they keep me healthy and out of trouble and off of the streets.

Every church can be viewed upon as being distinctively different due to their individual structures and the different ways that they have been decorated. Although being created as an original, all churches can be found with similar qualities with in. You can find statues representing some of the great saints and picture representations of those who lived along side Jesus and witnessed His miracles. You can also find sacramental candles burning in the honor of saints or for those who call upon God in a time of need. Upon the altar sits a ceremonial cup made of gold which is used to hold the wine representing the blood of Christ. Many church followers praise and drink from this cup each week during Holy Communion. On top of the golden cup sits a plate, also made of gold. This plate holds a circular piece of bread, which represents the body of Christ. This too is worshiped by those who attend the celebration of Christ’s sacrifice.

When people come to the church to praise the Lord, they are seating most commonly in rows of wooden benches, known as pews. As you sit in a pew, you will find that it has been set up with everything that a person would need to worship throughout the mass. Down near the floor in front of you, you will find a long, slender folding board known as a kneeler. This is often covered in padding as to help soften the kneeler when it is in use. In front of you is a small book shelf that contains the literature that will be used in that mass. Some of the books you may find are the Holy Bible, a book containing daily responsorial psalms and a book containing the hymns in which the people will sing.

While mass is being conducted you will notice that the ceremonial leader, called a priest, is always dressed in great robes. Always wearing white as the base garment, he will change the colors of his over garments as the sacramental periods of the church pass throughout the year. Along side of the priest are the “helpers” which prepare the church for ceremony and take on tasks for the priest during the mass. These helpers are known as servers or alter boys/girls. They commonly dress in a black robe with a white smock over their shoulders. They stay close to the priest throughout the entire mass and seem to always be in the right place at the right time.

It can be very impressive to look around the church and see the many different forms of artistic expression. Of all the items that I observe, the one that is the most significant to me is the holy cross. To look up above the altar and see Jesus nailed to the cross with spikes and wearing a crown of thorns makes me realize the pain and suffering that He went through to save His people and make life possible for all of us. This means so much to me because it will always remind us exactly who is the son of God and how much He suffered for us.

THE MECHANICS OF ENGINEERING

Engineering is one of the more artistic aspects of science. This is a field where math, physics, art and design all collaborate to form one smooth platform. Many dare to think that this is a field where you have to build or fix something, but that is untrue. It based on how things can collaborate. An engineer has to merge nature with his own creation. To be an engineer is much like being a parent, one has to breath life into his creation. So not anyone can be an engineer, because it is a field of passion and integrity.

Engineering is the foundation of everything in this world. To me, the challenge is all I want. Engineering is not just a high paying job with an easy life. It is one of the hardest known fields in the world. Mechanical engineering is a field that brings thoughts to reality. It is very much an exploration into uncharted territories. To be able to be an engineer, one has to pioneer into the abyss of life. From an early childhood, I have been constantly amazed by the complexity and mechanics of the world. Understanding the dynamics of the world, allows me to understand humanity a little more. An engineer’s job is the propel man into the future, by reformatting the world we live in and by introducing new technologies that would indeed prepare mankind for the greatest thrill-ride of the millennia.

Dante’s Paradiso

At the very opening, Dante reinforces the idea of a hierarchy of sin when he says “glory…glows in one part more and another less…” (l. , canto I) It becomes clear from the start that there will be levels in heaven, as there were in the Inferno and in Purgatorio.

Dante is extremely sparse in his metaphors with animals in Paradiso. The first he mentions is the eagle. In the context it seems that the eagle might stand for fearlessness, bravery, glory, or freedom, as Dante compares it to Beatrice. There are only about three other creatures mentioned in cantos I-XVII a bear, a lamb, wolves, deer, and a dog. His references to them are very brief, and he does not describe them in great detail.

“Not only does the shaft shot from this bow strike creatures lacking intellect, but those who have intelligence, and who can love.” (canto I)

“To live in love is, here, necessity...” (canto III)

Here Dante defines the line one must cross to get into heaven. It seems that love, to Dante, is the most important element in a human’s existence, for without it, a person will not survive. To Dante, love is the attribute humans can have that reaches closest to God’s character and goodness. If a human experiences true love, they experience something truly divine.

In canto III, there are some who have made their way into heaven because of their love, but there is something they have neglected that keeps them at the lowest level. In Inferno and Purgatorio, the actions, not the actions undone kept the people in their places.

“…for when a pact is drawn between men and God, then through free will, a man gives up what I have called his treasure, his free will.” (canto V)

Dante’s opinion again emerges here in the first heaven as he begins to realize the essence of God’s relationship with man.

Many changes violently shook America shortly after the Civil War. The nation was seeing things that it had never seen before; its entire economic philosophy was turned upside down. Huge multi-million dollar trusts were emerging, coming to dominate business. Companies like Rockefeller’s Standard Oil and Carnegie Steel were rapidly gobbling up small companies in any way possible. Government corruption was at what some consider an all time high. “The Rich Man’s Club” dominated the Senate as the Gilded Age reached its peak. On the local front, mob bosses controlled the cities, like Tammany Hall in New York. Graft and corruption were at an all time high while black rights sunk to a new low. Even after experiencing freedom during the Civil War, their hopes of immediate equality died with the death of Lincoln. Groups like the KKK drove blacks down to a new economic low. What time would be better than this to write a book about the great American dream, a book about long held American ideals, now squashed by big business and white supremacy? Mark Twain did just that, when he wrote what is considered by many as the “Great American Epic”.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, “The great American epic,” may be one of the most interesting and complex books ever written in the history of our nation. This book cleverly disguises many of the American ideals in a child floating down the Mississippi River on a raft with a black slave. On the outside of the story, one can see an exciting tale of heroism and adventure; however, that is not all. The book shows Mark Twain’s idea of the classic American idealism, consisting of freedom, morality, practicality, and an alliance with nature. Twain manages to show all this while poking fun at the emergence of the “robber barons,” better know as the big business of the late nineteenth century. Twain portrays many different American values in this book by expressing them through one of the many different characters. The character that Twain chose to represent morality and maturation is none other than Huck Finn himself. Throughout the novel one sees many signs of change. The setting is constantly fluctuating, except for the constant Mississippi, and Huck and Jim, a runaway slave, under-go many changes themselves. At the end of the novel Huck Finn shows a large change in his level of maturity than he had exhibited in the beginning of the book.

As the book begins, Mark Twain gives the reader a view of a little boy and his best friend. The reader gets a brief overview of events that place the friends in their current positions. Twain shows this position to give the reader an introduction to Huck Finn. As the story opens, the reader quickly grasps the idea that Huck Finn, by nature, does not show the ideas of “civilization”. This “civilization”, which is forced upon Huck by the Widow Douglas, shows how Huck gets to be so rebellious and immature. Huck’s immaturity is further displayed in his attitudes towards black people. Huck and Tom, Huck’s friend, are constantly attributed to pranks played on a slave named Jim. In general, it appears as though Huck is a follower of his friend Tom Sawyer. Huck must conform to Tom’s ritualistic ways, straying from his own practical ways. It seems as though Huck is incapable of making his own decisions. Huck always followed Tom in his silly childish games, like pretending they were pirates. In these childish games the immature children would pretend to “stop stagecoaches and carriages on the road, with masks on, and kill the people and take their watches and money.” These games, based off of what Tom had pieced together from novels, demonstrated the lack of maturity of the boys. In this opening setting the reader views one side of Huck, one of immaturity mainly dominated by Tom Sawyer. This view seems to radically change as time progresses.

The first time that Huck Finn is shown is shown to be varying from the original immature figure that he is displayed as in the opening of the novel, is when Huck goes to Jackson Island. On the island the reader catches his first glimpse of an independent Huck. Huck is brought away from both civilization and Tom, who together silence his inner maturity. In this demonstration of freedom, Huck is able to live happily by himself, only proving that civilization is holding back the real Huck. It seems that the further Huck ventures from civilization, the more mature he becomes. On Jackson Island, Huck meets up with the black slave that he and Tom used to hassle. Huck quickly establishes that the slave, Jim, is a runaway. Huck then takes it upon himself to help Jim runaway, thinking of it as an adventure. “Call me a low down abolitionist and despise me for keeping mum,” is all Huck has to say on the matter, but he keeps quiet just the same. He shows his first big step in his maturation here by being tolerant of Jim and not rejecting him as a subordinate, as he and Tom had done earlier. On the island the reader does still see signs of a Huck that is not maturing. On the island Huck is frightened by Jim’s superstition. After Huck holds a bit of snake’s skin, Jim becomes fearful because to him that is a sign of bad luck. Later, after getting bit by a snake, Jim’s superstition is validated. This only pushes Huck further towards believing in Jim’s superstition. The island is the first place where the reader can see Huck’s maturation; however, it certainly isn’t the best example of his growth.

Cheap Custom Essays on Huck Finn

essay writing service

The best example of Huck’s growth as a mature individual undoubtedly occurred with his experiences with the King and the Duke. These two characters, probably the antithesis of maturity and morality, help not only to strengthen Huck Finn’s values, but also to help him realize what they were in the first place. The basic plan of the Duke and King is to go from village to village along the Mississippi and con people out of their money. At first Huck just goes with the flow and does what the King and Duke say. However, as the story progresses, Huck becomes more and more unwilling to do what the King and Duke say. He develops a morality, and with that matures to the level where he is able to detect that what the King and Duke are doing is wrong. Jim often aids Huck in his recognition of this, and because of this, Huck and Jim grow together much more closely than ever before. This growth again shows how Huck believes that Jim is his equal, and not a subordinate.

The scene in which Huck matures the most because of the King and the Duke is when the group hears of the death of Mr. Wilkes. This man, who had a substantial amount of money, had willed it to not only his relatives in America, but also his brothers in England. The King and Duke pretend to be his brothers from England, and come to collect their inheritance money. Of course that just isn’t enough for the two, so by sheer generosity, they “selflessly” give up their share of the inheritance money. By this “display of caring” the two manage to twist events to the point where they receive all of the inheritance money left by Peter Wilkes. This is where Huck shows a large amount of maturation. After he had learned of their plan, he said, “it was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race. He realizes that what the Duke and King are doing is extremely wrong. His morals tell him that he can’t let the Duke and King get away with such an awful crime against the Wilkes. Before the King and Duke leave, Huck steals the money the frauds had stolen and hides it. Huck here shows a great deal of maturity because he is breaking away from his “Tom Sawyer” ways. Instead of looking for adventure he realizes what is right, and sees that it is done. The delay is costly to the King and Duke, who barely escape the town after the real relatives from England show up. These events not only reinforce the morals that Huck already possesses, but they also show that his time spent in “civilization” with the Widow has taught him something after all.

Another experience that helps Huck to mature is when he stays with the Grangerfords. Even though Huck’s stay with the Grangerfords is short he experiences a large amount of moral growth. The Grangerfords were involved in a feud with an another family, the Sheperdsons. The feud between the families came as a horrible shock to Huck. Through this feud, Huck learned just how bad war and hatred could really be. This was amplified when the Grangerford family member that he had come to know well, Buck, was killed in the feud. His timely death made Huck realize that there really shouldn’t be something silly enough to make a child no older than himself become a crazed murderer. He was mature enough to realize that Buck’s statement, “A feud is something where everyone on one side wants to kill everyone on the other side, until by and by everybody’s killed off, and there ain’t no more feud.” What shocked Huck even more was that the families were not really even sure what they were fighting about. However, amidst the chaos, Twain shows that there can be reconciliation. Even though the families would not agree to stop fighting, members of each family showed there could be love. Sophia Grangerford ran off to be with Harney Sheperdson so the two could be together, despite their families’ differences. Huck’s experience with the Grangerfords certainly taught him a great deal about strong emotions, which in turn helped him to mature.

Throughout the majority of the book, the reader gets a sense of Huck maturing. The image of Huck at the beginning, a rowdy young boy with little respect for blacks, and a feeling of “immortality of youth”, is seemingly shattered with the progression of the book. However, this progression changes near the end of the book, when Twain decides to bring Tom Sawyer back into the plot. By doing this, Twain seems to almost throw out all of the maturation that Huck has gathered throughout the book. Huck seems to not take a dominant position in the situation, but he instead falls right back into his conformity with Tom. This is best seen when the two boys try to rescue Jim at the end of the book. As usual, Huck comes up with a good, simple idea to free Jim. However, Tom just didn’t buy it. “But it’s too blame simple; there ain’t nothin’ to it. What’s the good of the plan that ain’t no more trouble than that?” was Tom’s response to Huck’s simple plan. It showed that Tom was still just an immature boy who was looking to have a good time, and play a game. Huck on the other hand demonstrated his affection for Jim. He wanted to free Jim, and didn’t care how. Deep down he knew that his plan was very good; however, he took a submissive approach to Tom’s plan, which caused the two more problems than ever.

Huck’s experiences demonstrate the fact that Huck was able to grow much better without the influence of Tom. Without Tom, Huck realized that blacks and whites were really equal. Tom, on the other hand, didn’t even grasp the concept of equality. As far as he could see, life was just a game. He wanted to make it as fun as possible, not caring who he helped along the way, or who he hurt. At this point Huck wanted to have Jim’s rescue involve as little conflict as possible, as he had learned from the Grangerfords that militias conflict was in general bad, yet he was still submissive when Tom brought up his idea. Huck took all that he had learned, especially from the feud with the Grangerfords, and threw it out the window. In general, it appears that when Huck is in the presence of Tom, or rather under his influence, he is less likely to make an educated decision. Tom impedes Huck’s ability to use what he has learned along his adventures.

Another area where Huck has made major advances in maturity is in his ideas of equality. Huck has come along way since the beginning of the novel, where he and Tom picked on Jim. One now sees that Huck has come to accept people’s differences, he realizes that what matters is not really on the outside. Throughout the course of the novel, particularly aboard the raft, the reader realizes that Jim and Huck seem to bond more and more. This bonding symbolizes the way that Huck is accepting people other than those that he was told to as his equals. Twain does an excellent job at making the reader realize just how much Huck really has matured by reincorporating Tom into the novel at the end. This gives the reader a basis on which to compare the old Huck, who seemed to be almost exactly like Tom, to the new Huck. The new Huck, it is painstakingly obvious, has matured much more than his old self, Tom. Again, it can be seen in the ways that the two try and free Jim.

In E.M. Fosters novel A Passage To India, Foster starts out with a short, brief description and introduction about the setting, tell us exactly where the story is going to take place. By Foster opening up his novel this way, it helps us to appreciate the Indians as the natives of the land of India. Through out the story E.M. Foster uses many different geographical aspects as symbols to represent different things that are going to occur through the plot of the story.

In chapter one, Foster opens up his story by describing Chandrapore, a city along the Ganges. Chandrapore is a prototypical Indian town, neither distinguished nor exceptionally troubled, therefore this town can be taken symbolic of the rest of India rather than an exceptional case. In Chandrapore, the streets are mean, the temples ineffective, and though a few fine houses exist they are hidden away in gardens or down alleys whose filth deters all but the invited guest. Chandrapore was never large or beautiful, except for the Marabar Caves, that are twenty miles away from the city. When looking from the Bazaar in Chandrapore, the low lying area is where the Indians lived, which is not much more than mud huts. Right in the middle of the mountains between where the low lying area sits and the higher side of the mountain sits is called the civil station. This is where the people who do not belong to either the English or the Indian group live at. Then Foster describes the higher side of the mountain where the English people live. A city of gardens, which is not really a city, but a forest sparsely scattered with huts, toddy palms, palm trees, and mangoes. It is a beautiful place with branches and beckoning leaves and even a place for the birds to visit. (Chapter 1) By setting up this description of the city of Chandrapore, it shows us that the English people are the ones that are living on the nicer side of the bazaare and that the English men think that the Indians and themselves can not be friends. With this in mind it shows that at this time the English have total control and power over India.

At the end of chapter one, Foster also goes into a brief description describing what the sky looks like and what it represents. Foster says,

“By day the blue will pale down into white where it touches the white of the land, after sunset it has a new circumference orange, melting upwards into tenderest purple.” (Chapter 1)

Here Foster is trying to describe what the sunrise and sunset looks like everyday over the city of Chandrapora. Foster also goes on and says,

The sky settles everything not only climates and seasons but when the earth shall be beautiful. By herself she can do little only feeble outbursts of flowers. (Chapter 1)

Here Foster is saying that hopefully one day the English men and the Indian can come to peace and make friends and then everything will settle itself just like the climates and season do on the earth.

In chapter four, Foster starts to bring in the idea of the Bridge Party between the Indians and the Englishmen. This is a significant event for the Indians. They believe that the motivation for the party is not a sincere attempt to stimulate correlation among the two societies, but rather to dictate a higher ranking colonial official. The Indians feel that this is a good time to step in and show the English men who is in control of India, but the British define their power by their ability to dominate the Indians and exclude them from certain privileges, whether it be political or social issues. The Bridge Party was a big failure for all of those who attended, because it represents all of the problems of cross-cultural exchanges between the English and the Indians. The British who attend the party do not behave very well, they are very disrespectful to the Indian and also evokes a broader them of colonialism.

In chapter twelve, E.M. Foster goes into a deep description of the Marabar Caves and what they symbolize. Each of the caves include a tunnel about eight feet long, five feet high, three feet wide that leads to a circular chamber about twenty feet in diameter. Having seen one cave, has essentially seen them all. Foster then goes on to describe the Marabar Caves as a center of uncertainty, but the caves will serve as a physical manifestation of the events that takes place around the caves. Foster also creates a sense of irony surrounding the trip to the caves, but also describes the caves perhaps as unexceptional and even dull.

At the end of the novel E.M. Foster bring the sky back into the setting to give the story it final ending. It helps to set the tone for the bittersweet reconciliation between Aziz and Fielding, but also with realization that the two cannot be friends under contemporary conditions. In this manner, Foster ends A Passage To India as a tragic but platonic love story between the two friends, separated by different cultures and political climates.

In A Passage To India, Foster used geographical symbols to help us to better understand what is going on in the story between the Indians and the English. Foster also uses these symbols as descriptions to foreshadow and/or reinforce the messages about the colonialism between India and the British.

Overview

What is the Social Learning Theory?

The theory explains that viewers imitate what they see on television through the procedure referred to as “observational learning”.

The uppermost level of observational learning is achieved through first organizing and rehearsing the behavior seen on TV and rehearsing the behavior symbolically then overtly enacting.

The “rewards” that television characters receive for their antisocial, and illicit behavior (both the possession, such as the money from a robbery, and the glamorization, and recognition for there crime on television) encourage limitation.

“Bobo the doll Experiment”

A example of the social learning theory is Bandura’s classic experiment on the imitation of violence, called the “Bobo the doll experiment”

This experiment validated Banduras initial theory of social learning

Experiment Limitations

The experiment consisted of children situated in a room to view a movie of a model hitting a “Bobo” doll, and thus being punished, a model hitting the doll and being rewarded, and a model hitting the doll without consequence. The experiment proved that if children saw the model rewarded for their behavior, or if the children saw the video that did not have any consequence to the action, the children became more aggressive and enacted the behavior upon the doll similarly. Though this proved Banduras theory correct, many limitations to the research method are appear. One cannot assume that the conditions under which the experiment was conducted reflect real world situations, and thus raise questions about Generalizability arise. The treatments of the experiment may be unrealistic in the way they often involve much more intense sequences of content then what one would see in the real world.

Generalizability Definition

Back to Generalizability

In many ways, generalizability amounts to nothing more than making predictions based on a recurring experience. If something occurs frequently, we expect that it will continue to do so in the future. Researchers use the same type of reasoning when generalizing about the findings of their studies. Once researchers have collected sufficient data to support a hypothesis, a premise regarding the behavior of that data can be formulated, making it generalizable to similar circumstances. Because of its foundation in probability, however, such a generalization cannot be regarded as conclusive or exhaustive.

While generalizability can occur in informal, nonacademic settings, it is usually applied only to certain research methods in academic studies. Quantitative methods allow some generalizability. Experimental research, for example, often produces generalizable results. However, such experimentation must be rigorous in order for generalizable results to be found.

Observational or social learning is based primarily on the work of Albert Bandura. He and his colleagues were able to demonstrate through a variety of experiments that the application of consequences was not necessary for learning to take place. Rather learning could occur through the simple processes of observing someone elses activity. This work provided the foundation for Banduras later work in social cognition.

Bandura formulated his findings in a four-step pattern which combines a cognitive view and an operant view of learning.

1. Attention -- the individual notices something in the environment

. Retention -- the individual remembers what was noticed

. Reproduction -- the individual produces an action that is a copy of what was noticed

4. Motivation -- the environment delivers a consequence that changes the probability the behavior will be emitted again (reinforcement and punishment)

Banduras work draws from both behavioral and cognitive views of learning. He believes that mind, behavior and the environment all play an important role in the learning process.

In a set of well known experiments, called the Bobo doll studies, Bandura showed that children (ages to 6) would change their behavior by simply watching others.

Three groups of children watched a film in which a child in a playroom behaved aggressively (e.g., hit, kick, yell) towards a bobo doll. The film had three different endings. One group of children saw the child praised for his behavior; a second group saw the child told to go sit down in a corner and was not allowed to play with the toys; a third group (the control) group saw a film with the child simply walking out of the room. Children were then allowed into the playroom and actions of aggression were noted.

What do we learn from these data in terms of the differences and similarities between boys and girls? Among different experimental conditions? Was the model rewarded really an example of the use of positive reinforcement?

Bandura and his colleagues also demonstrated that viewing aggression by cartoon characters produces more aggressive behavior than viewing live or filmed aggressive behavior by adults. Additionally, they demonstrated that having children view prosocial behavior can reduce displays of aggressive behavior

In more recent years, Bandura has turned his attention to self-efficacy and self-regulation. He now classifies his theoretical orientation as social cognition

Social cognition has its roots in social psychology which attempts to understand and explain how the thoughts, feelings, and behavior of individuals are influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others (Allport, 185, p. ). It studies the individual within a social or cultural context and focuses on how people perceive and interpret information they generate themselves (intrapersonal) and from others (interpersonal) (Sternberg, 14
