Introduction

The story of an Hour by Kate Chopin has a very profound meaning about the marriage institution. In this particular story, we can find that even though love is the element that keeps a couple together, however, the relation between Mr Brently Mallard and Mrs. Mallard was far to be a true love relationship. Mrs. Mallard waited all her life for something to happen, to feel free and to express herself all the irony in that relationship.

Body

In Kate Chopins short story The Story of an Hour, there is much irony. The first irony discovered is in the way that Louise reacts to the news of the death of her husband, Brently Mallard. Before Louises reaction is revealed, Chopin indirectly noticed how the widow feels by describing the world according to her perception after the dreadful news. Louise stated not to hear the story as many women have heard the same; instead, she accepts it and goes to her room to be alone. Now the reader starts to see the world through Louises eyes, a world full of new and pure life. In her room, Louise fall gradually into a comfortable chair and looks out her window. Immediately, the image of comfort seems to hit an odd note. A person reading this story should question the use of this word comfortable and why Louise is not beating the furniture instead. Also, the newly widowed woman is looking out of the window and sees spring and all the new life it brings. The descriptions used now are as far away from death as possible. The delicious breath of rain...the notes of a distant song...countless sparrows were twittering...patches of blue sky.... All these are beautiful images of life; the reader is quite confused by this most unusual suggestion until Louises reaction is explained. The widow whispers, Free, free, free! Louise realizes that her husband had loved her, but she goes on to explain that as men and women often restrain each other, even if it is done with the best of intentions, they exert their own wills upon each other. She realized that although at times she had loved him, she has regained her freedom. Although this reaction is completely unexpected, the reader quickly accepts it because of Louises adequate explanation. She grows excited and begins to fantasize about living her life for herself. With this realization, she wishes that life might be long, and she feels like a goddess of Victory as she walks down the stairs. This is an eerie for shadowing for an even more unexpected ending. The reader has just accepted Louises reaction to her husbands death. When the most unexpected happens, her husband is actually alive and he enters the room shocking everyone, and Louise especially, as she is shocked to death. The irony continues though because the doctors say she died of joy, when the reader knows that she actually died because she had a glimpse of freedom and could not go back to living under her husbands will again. In the title, the story refers to that of Louises life. She lived in the true sense of the word, with the will and freedom to live for only one hour.

Conclusion

Irony indeed, is the way Mrs. Mallord was living all her marriage life. In the presence of Mr. Brently Mallord’s she seems to be having a normal marriage, however deep inside, ironically she expected something to happen and that is to be free. As soon as she heard that Mr Mallord was dead she jumped of joy. She felt released from the terror of the years she had been living next to Mr. Mallords; but ironically, “She loved him sometimes”Mrs Mallor was already in another world, a place full of joy and freedom with no pressure of any kind. She was dreaming of long years of happiness living by her when suddenly Mr. Brently came home He had been far from the accident” He is alive. Mrs. Mallord was in shock and soon after She died, ironically, she rather died in her new world of joy and freedom, than continue to live with Mr. Brently.

My Opinion

Kate Copan’s Story presents the reality of a marriage couple. Many families have been living for years similar to the story of Mrs. Brantly. Many people have different factors that keep them people together such as Children, financial status etc. but in reality, the love is gone and one of the partner’s continues living in the marriage, but deep inside he or she is waiting for that moment of freedom and joy to be able to reach that happiness they never reached during their marriage life.
