Much of the play ‘Othello’, focuses on Iago’s betrayal of others, however, the major betrayal in the play is that of Othello’s betrayal to self.

Othello’s self-betrayal is much to do with his flaws within his qualities. By having these flaws he (Othello) gives in to temptation from Iago whereby he sets him self up to be vulnerable/paranoid and loses control. Once this happens Othello is led into a journey of mad jealousy. As he trusts Iago, he betrays himself in being ignorant to the truth and by doing so also betrays Desdemona (by not trusting her and killing her). This in itself is a form of his own betrayal, for he loves Desdemona and yet kills her for unjustifiable reasons.

Othello has flaws within his own qualities, which lead him to self-betrayal. An example of this is his trusting characteristic, which fails him; as- trusting turns to gullible (and therefore rash, in the consequential decisions he makes). This is proven in Act ,

Scene - where ultimately Othello takes away Cassio’s position from him before knowing the true facts, (but after listening to Iago). In this scene Iago manipulates Cassio by getting him drunk in order to make a situation where Cassio seems ‘in the wrong’ and would lose his position as ‘Lieutenant’. Although the outcome of a drunken brawl between Cassio and Montano is due to Iago’s cunning plan, Othello falls for Iago’s ‘reluctant’ explanation of what happened. Line 0 Iago “I had rather have this tongue cut from my mouth Than it should do offence to Michael Cassio, yet, I persuade myself, to speak the truth” Othello is gullible in believing this tactic Iago has used and very rash in his following decision…

Line 8 - Othello “I know, Iago, Thy honesty and love doth mince this matter, Making it light to Cassio. Cassio, I love thee, But never more be officer of mine.

Though this scene focuses on Iago’s betrayel of others (i.e Cassio, Othello..) the major betrayal is Othello’s to himself through his flaw (i.e gullibility and rash decision-making) in his trusting quality which leads him to self-betrayal.

Othello gives in to Iago’s temptation; which is a betrayal of self, as he clearly sets himself up to be vulnerable/paranoid and inevitably lose control.

The great temptation scene i.e Act Scene, is a pivotal example of this.

The scene begins with Desdemona assuring Cassio she will help him get his position back. (This is after Iago has suggested Cassio seek help from Desdemona with spiteful plans to make Othello think something is going on between Cassio and his wife). Iago starts to plant seeds of doubt in Othello’s mind, as he draws attention to Cassio and Desdemona conversing. Iago tempts Othello by making remarks unfinished, leaving an impression that he is holding back on his true thoughts. Line 8, Iago Cassio, my lord? No, sure I cannot think it that he would steal away so guilty-like, seeing you coming.

Othello foolishly gives in to the temptation. Line 107, Othello By heaven, he echoes me, As if there were some monster in his thought, Too hideous to be shown.

Although much of this scene is focused on Iago’s betrayal to others (primarily Othello), The major betrayal is that of Othello’s, to himself when he gives in to Iago’s temptation.

When Othello gives in to Iago’s temptation, he sets himself up to be vulnerable/paranoid and inevitably lose control and once again he betrays himself as he trusts Iago and is ignorant to the truth. Signs of this begin to show later in Act Scene .

After the audience becomes aware that Iago has possession of a meaningful handkerchief Othello gave to Desdemona (and Iago reveals what he intends to do with it). At this point, we see Othello’s trust in Iago and the beginning of Othello going mad (i.e losing control.)

Line 4, Othello Farewell the tranquil mind! Farewell content!

Othello divulges he is convinced of Desdemona’s infidelity and demands Iago provide him with evidence (thus working perfectly with Iago’s plan). Line 60, Othello Villain, be sure thou prove my love a whore; Be sure of it. Give me the ocular proof…

The audience is even more aware of Othello losing control and just how afflicted he is in line 85, Othello I think my wife be honest, and think she is not; I think that thou art just, and think thou art not.

It is clear Iago greatly betrays others, however Othello’s self-betrayal is the major focus.

Othello sets himself up to be vulnerable/paranoid and inevitably lose control. He betrays himself by trusting Iago and being ignorant to the truth.

Othello’s ultimate betrayal to himself is when he kills Desdemona for unjustifiable reasons, for, his reasons are a result of all his other self-betrayals. He betrays himself by not being aware to this (finding out too late!) and by killing her when he still loves her greatly. Act 5 Scene (after Othello kisses Desdemona) line 16, Othello O balmy breath, that dost almost persuade Justice to break her sword! One more, One more!

Othello nearly abandons his intent to kill her, but resolves that she must die. Line 18, Othello Be thus when thou art dead, and I will kill thee And love thee after. One more, and this the last.

Desdemona wakes and Othello orders her to confess her sins before he kills her. Desdemona, fearful, replies her sin is in loving him. Line , Othello Think on thy sins

Line 40, Desdemona They are loves I bear to you.

Though Desdemona persists she has been faithful and asks not to die Othello suffocates her, only to later realise what a fool he’s been. Before Othello stabs himself he asks the story be told truthfully and refers to Desdemona in Line 4, Othello threw a pearl away Richer than all his tribe.

Othello has betrayed his greatest love and most of all himself! His ultimate self-betrayal is the result of all his other betrayals to himself.

In order to understand the importance of international law, one must understand what international law is. International law is, “The body of legal rules that apply between sovereign states and other entities having international personality” (www.britannica.com). International law has come about because nations feel the need to live together peacefully. However, it has its roots in each country’s self-interest, and there is no international law enforcing body. Each state has to adhere to the laws through cooperation. Also, some states have put international law into their jurisdictions.

International law has come about by three procedures, international customary law, treaties, and general principles of law. Customary law is sovereignty, recognition, consent, good faith, freedom of the sea, international responsibility, and self-defense among the states (www.britannica.com). Treaties help to form international law. Treaties are legally binding and may declare, change, or develop existing international law. There are some very important international rules controlled by treaties (www.britannica.com). Some of these important aspects of treaties are diplomatic law, immunity, protection of nationals abroad, freedom of commerce, and succession to international rights and obligations. Also, large international organizations help form international law. However, it has been said by some that international law is not really law. A positive theorist named Austin said that “international law does not have proper sanctions and enforcement mechanisms to be law, but this can be dismissed when international law is compared to primitive law. They both have societal organization behind the law, authority to apply sanctions lack of central government, lack of legislature, and the lack of courts with compulsory jurisdiction” (Amerasingh 81-8). Therefore, international law has similarities to primitive law and can be considered a type of legal system (Amerasingh 81-8).

Cases of genocide (the Holocaust or Rwanda), crimes against humanity, and serious war crimes are all reasons why diplomats from over 150 countries met in Rome on June 15 to finalize the establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC). To this day the Rome Treaty has been signed by 1 countries and as of November 1, 001 ratified by 4 of the countries. The United States has signed it but because of the controversy over the ICC it has not yet been ratified and probably never will be (http//www.iccnow.org/html/coalition.htm). The dream of an ICC will become a reality in the near future when the sixtieth country ratifies the treaty.

The potential impact of the ICC is enormous. By holding individuals personally accountable, the Court could be an extremely powerful deterrent to the commission of genocide, crimes against humanity and serious war crimes that have plagued humanity during the course of this century (http//www.iccnow.org/html/coalition.htm). Not only is the establishment of the Court an opportunity to provide critical redress to victims and survivors, but potentially to spare victims from the horrors of such atrocities in the future. If effective, the ICC will extend the rule of law internationally; impelling national systems to themselves investigate and prosecute the most heinous crimes-- thus strengthening those systems-- while guaranteeing that where they fail, the ICC can operate to ensure that justice prevails over impunity (http//www.hrw.org/campaigns/icc/qna.htm).

There is question whether or not the ICC would interfere with U.S. Sovereignty and Security. Currently, nation-states have primary responsibility for prosecuting crimes such as war crimes and crimes against humanity. In some cases, crimes are addressed through the ad hoc tribunals, which were first set up by the United Nations Security Council on May 5, 1 in response to the horrific war in former Yugoslavia where at least 00,000 people were killed (http//www.hrw.org/campaigns/icc/qna.htm). The ICC would have much greater autonomy and powers to investigate and prosecute suspected crimes of genocide, war crimes, or crimes against humanity. The power given to the court could affect the rights guaranteed to Americans, which are granted by the U.S. Constitution.

There is also great controversy in the U.S. over the powers of such a court and the powers given to agents and judges to investigate crimes, prosecute, pass judgments, sentence, and even hear the appeals of its decision on an array of crimes from genocide, war crimes, and terrorism (gopher//.igc.apc.org/00/icc/ngodocs/us%6icc_lchr.txt). There is controversy because such judicial power goes against the American legal traditions where to ensure a fair trial and diminish corruption and politicization functions of investigation, prosecution, trial, and appeal are kept separate. Instead, the United States believes that if the ad hoc tribunals were used more often and with more impartiality, flaws of the tribunals could be corrected (gopher//.igc.apc.org/00/icc/ngodocs/us%6icc_lchr.txt).Senator Helms is also one of the strong advocators pushing strongly for an ad hoc international court (gopher//.igc.apc.org/00/icc/ngodocs/us%6icc_lchr.txt).

An International Criminal Court will help uphold the laws of humanity by putting those accused of such crimes as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity under trial and behind bars. Most perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity throughout history have gone unpunished even in the twentieth century (gopher//.igc.apc.org/00/icc/ngodocs/us%6icc_lchr.txt). So, most past perpetrators probably believed that their horrendous acts against humanity would go unpunished. With the ICC established, effective prevention will be used so it will be clear to everyone that the international community will not tolerate such atrocities. The court will reduce the possibilities of such atrocities reoccurring around the world if the accused know they won’t get away with it.

International law has affected many things in our global society. One thing that international law influences is foreign policy (Tunkin 7-). However, foreign policy can affect international law, but what is important is how international law can affect domestic foreign policy. Contemporary international law is peaceful existence between states and the free development of people. The effectiveness of international law on foreign policy in states depends on who is at war and peace in the system (Tunkin 7-). Therefore, the more peaceful states seem to be in more agreement with international law than power seeking states. For example, the realist approach to international law is to seek power in foreign policy and disregard international law and morality. However, war is something that most counties wish to avoid, and most countries must observe international law in order to maintain peace. Therefore, it must be a guiding principle in diplomacy and foreign policy (Tunkin 7-).

International law is not always in our favor or supports our views here in America. The landmine ratification allows a new treaty to become law in 1. This is against the use of landmines, but the U.S. did not sign the Ottawa Convention against the use of landmines (Birchard 1004). Another issue that was not in American interest was how the U.N. wanted Jurisdiction over U.S. soldiers in criminal court. Clinton rejected this idea, but the court will try to claim jurisdiction over the soldiers overseas anyway (Birchard 1004). For example, a solider on a peace keeping mission in Iraq could be tried for war crimes. There are those in the U.S. senate that say if the U.S. does not sign the treaty to put their soldiers on trial is against the treaty law (D’Agostino 5). Therefore, it can be seen that international law affects everyone here on the planet, and it affects people here in the U.S. also weather good or bad.

I personally feel that international law is a situation that not just Americans, everyone in the world should be knowledgeable about. One should not be ignorant of what goes on in the world because situations like this can and will affect ones life. International law helps to define what countries can and cannot do in the international scene. To me, this is absolute ludicrous, countries should have the right to do what they please (as long as it’s humane) with their citizens in their country. As long as people are being treated humanely and one country is not invading another, then international law should not interfere.

Telling All on “The Tell-Tale Heart”

Tyson Yow

In Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”, the horrifying story of a man’s brutal murder by a trusted servant is told. Using characteristics common in many American Gothic Fiction, Poe illustrates a very dark setting within the old man’s home in an unspecified town. All four of the characteristics of an American Gothic Fictional story were used in Poe’s heart-racing tale. The general characteristics include a dark, scary setting (as previously mentioned), purposes to frighten the reader, very violent, and usually focuses on a supernatural force.

In “The Tell-Tale Heart”, Poe chooses a very dark and creepy setting, as is the first characteristic of American Gothic. One online source notes, “The narrators nervousness is a frequently used device of Poe to establish tone and plausibility through heightened states of consciousness.” (Womack) He places the entire story in the old man’s house, more specifically the common room and his bedroom. It is set back in probably the mid-1800s in what appears to be a town, although never clearly addressed. The house is described as both dark and secure. Poe mentions that the old man’s room was “black as pitch with the thick darkness.” (Poe 57) He also illustrates the windows as “close fastened, through fear of robbers.” (Poe 57) The old man’s suspicious nature and want for security provides great irony and adds to the suspense of his well-kept home, especially since he was murdered in what was supposed to be his safe haven from the world.

Secondly, Poe’s tale tries to frighten the reader. He uses the element of suspense to prepare the reader. He describes, in detail, the stalking, hiding, and brutal murder of the victim. The man waited for seven days, entering the room and “cautiously” undoing the lantern so that a “single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye.” (Poe 57) The madman’s continuous reassurance that “what you mistake for madness is but over-acuteness of the senses.” (Poe 57) Poe tells, too, of the source of madness, the “evil eye,” allowing such a vivid picture to enter the minds eye and relate to the crazed man’s awkward behavior. (57) The belief in the evil eye dates back to ancient times, and even today. The belief “centers around the idea that those who possess the evil eye have the power to harm people or their possessions by merely looking at them.” (Womack) In the end, as the “beating” of the old man’s “hideous heart” grew “louderlouderlouder, “ the reader’s own heart begins to race. Such an element of suspense, that we, too, feel as if we “must scream or die.” (Poe 58)

The third characteristic is the extreme violence carried throughout the story. The madman does much more than just kill the old man, he also “dismembered the corpse” and caught all the blood and mess in a tub, leaving “nothing to wash.” (58) And, afterwards, he is left with no remorse or guilt. Had it not been for the sound of the beating heart heard in the back of his head, the man actually would have gotten away with it. He, himself, said, “I smiledfor what did I have to fear?” (Poe 58) A remark that sends chills down the spine, for it indicates a lack of remorse and a cold heart. His quick and precise cover-up of the murder was also masterfully violent. He “took up three planks…and deposited all between the scantlings.” (Poe 58) He spitefully even sat his “seat upon the very spot beneath which reposed the corpse of the victim.” (Poe 58)

Lastly, the fourth characteristic is the focus on the supernatural. Poe carefully unleashes the evil eye as nothing more than the man’s eye, yet as the story progresses, one realizes that the eye is like a vultures eye, actually driving the servant man mad. He is so mad, in fact, that he kills the man he has love for and believe that it is done in the name of justice. Once dead, he believed that the man’s “eye would bother him no more.” (Poe 58) Instead, the “low, dull, quick” beat of his heart drove him to admit his wrong. (Poe 58) He “foam…raved …swore” as the noise increased. (Poe 58) The supernatural beating could not be stopped, not even once he admitted to the crime.

In conclusion, Poe’s classic tale of “The Tell-Tale Heart” is a psychotic thriller of man driven to kill all at the whim of a supposed evil eye. Poe graphically illustrates and carries the genre of American Gothic Fiction right down to the end, without ever losing focus. The explicit detail and frightening suspense further increase the thrill for the reader throughout the wonderfully mastered tale.

Mother Teresa was a wonderful woman and a great influence on the world today. She was born in 110 in Macedonia with the name Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. She was born into a family of deeply religious Catholics. Agnes felt she got the calling to work for God at the young age of fourteen. She joined the Loreto order and went to Bengal, India, to start her studies. In 17, Agnes took her final vows to become a nun and has done much great work in the world since. Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born on August 7, 110 to Nikola and Drana Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia. Drana and Nikola were Albanian and both were very deeply religious Roman Catholics. Nikola was a popular merchant and a partner to an Italian merchant. He owned several houses and was a member of the Skopje town council. Whenever Agnes’ father would return from a trip, he would always bring his children presents. Also, he promoted his daughters’ education, which was uncommon in that time period. Nikola also was involved in an underground organization that worked to gain independence for the Albanians from the Ottoman Turks, who ruled Macedonia around the time Agnes was born. Agnes grew up around much fighting. When she was born, there were Albanian protests against the Turkish government. When she was two, she witnessed the First Balkan War. In that war, the Ottomans were defeated, but Macedonia was divided among the conquerors Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegero, and Serbia. The city of Skopje was distributed to Serbia. Albania received its independence in 11, but Nikola continued his nationalist work. He joined a movement determined to incorporate Serbia into the Albanian nation. In 114, when Agnes was only four years old, World War I began. In 118, her father was killed. Some people believe that he was poisoned by enemies. Many people mourned his death because of his kindness and generosity. Drana Bojaxhiu and the family were left with little money and no means of income. Drana worked hard to provide for her family. To get enough money, she became a dressmaker. Even though she had to work extra hard to make ends meet, Drana still found time and money to give to the lonely. When Agnes was young, she used to go on trips with her mother to visit the elderly, sick, and the poor. It is said that their mother’s generosity may have had the greatest influence on Agnes, her sister, and her brother. Agnes was the youngest of the three children. Her older brother was named Lazar and her older sister was Aga. Aga was five years older than Agnes. Agnes loved reading books, saying prayers, and thinking. She also liked to sing and write poems about her faith. Agnes learned her faith from her mother. There was a sign in the front room of their house that read In this house, no one must speak against another. Drana passed down to her children many values. She believed that the Lord’s work was reward enough in itself and that you should serve God in a practical, helpful way. Agnes had thought about being a teacher when she was younger, but at the age of twelve, she knew she wanted to lead a religious life. When Agnes was only fourteen, she knew she wanted to be a missionary nun. At age eighteen, Agnes joined the Loreto order of nuns. In September of 18, she left her family and everything she knew to serve God at the Loreto Abbey in Dublin Ireland. There, she learned how to speak English. In November, she went to India to teach English in an Indian school. In 1, Agnes started her novitiate in an Abbey in Darjeeling, and abbey in the foothills of the Himalayas

SHYLOCK

Shylock was a man more sinned against than sinning. Discuss.

The Merchant of Venice was written by William Shakespeare. One of the main plots is the bond between Shylock and Antonio. Shylock is a very important character, he is essential to the play, and without him there wouldn’t be one. Shylock is a man more sinned against than sinning; he is at times a bad, bitter and evil man although there are times when you feel sorry for him, as he seems reasonable. I think that during the play he is a mixture of bad and good but deep down he is a good man that has been hurt is whole life by others. He is pushed to be the way he is because of other people, one of the reasons being his religion. Antonio and his men treat him like a dog, spit on him just because he is a Jew.

Others see shylock as evil and bitter. He is introduced to the play when Antonio and Basanio discuss borrowing money from him. Shylock keeps them guessing, irritating them, delays giving them an answer, plays with their minds, and winds them up about why he should give the money to them. Act 1, Sc , L -116 ‘what should I say to you? Should I not say?

Hath a dog money? Is it possible?

A cur can lend three thousand ducats or

Should I bend low and in a bondman’s key?

With bated breath and whispering humbleness,

Say this;

‘Fair sir, you spat on me Wednesday last;

You spurn’d me such a day; another time

You called me dog - and for these courtesies

I’ll lend you this much money?

Here, in this speech, Shylock seems a good man, as he tells it like it is and you can actually feel sorry for him because of the way he is treated although you quickly change your mind back to thinking he is evil and crazy.

Shylock cracked what was ‘just a wee joke’, he told Antonio, if you fail to repay me on time; I will take a pound of your flesh!

In the play others see Shylock as a greedy, evil Jew. They don’t see him as a person just a Jew. The also think he is greedy businessmen and a bad father. Shylock is a very religious man and wants his daughter to believe in her religion as much as he does. She doesn’t feel as strongly about it though and falls in love with a Christian which her father doesn’t know about. She runs away with the Christian and all Shylock is concerned about is the money she took. Tubal told Shylock his daughter had spent fourscore ducats in one night. He is raging mad, he doesn’t ask of her health or whereabouts all he is worried about is that he will never see his gold again! Tubal makes him feel even worse by telling him, Act , Sc 1 L 11-117, ‘One of the divers showed me a ring that he had of your daughter for a monkey’, Shylock then said, ‘ Out upon her! Thou torturest me, Tubal it was

My turquoise; I had it of Leah when I was a bachelor I would not have given it for a wilderness of monkeys.’

This also shows that he is a bad father and a ruthless businessman as he doesn’t care about his daughter just the money she took with her and that he will never see the money that he worked so hard for again.

I have said what others think of Shylock but I think he is evil and bitter only because he is pushed to be. All his life he has been treated like dirt and he only gives out what he gets. When he was introduced in the play I thought he was insane with his ‘wee joke’ about the bond but when you sit and study what must have possessed him to want to do this it came down to him wanting revenge against Antonio for the way he has treated him. Shylock adds one of the main plots if not the main plot to the play. He also adds twists and provides great entertainment for the audience.

Emily, the town’s idol, was in fact very much in love with Homer Barron. Emily was however, put in a situation where, because of how rich and successful her father was she had certain behavioral patterns that she was forced to follow. Homer was from the North, and Miss Emily was from the South, so not only was this marriage never going to happen, but also Emily would never be able to marry at all.

“Throughout the 1800’s many Southerners condemned and criticized slavery; which, in turn would end up in a civil war between the North and the South” (A Comprehensive […] 1). This alone would be ground enough for Emily to never marry or even date a Northerner; it just wasn’t heard of.

Although the townspeople knew Emily would never marry Homer because of her status, I believe they also made up stories to reassure themselves that this marriage would never occur. “Homer himself had remarked-he liked men, and it was known that he drank with the younger men in the Elk’s club-that he was not a marrying man” (Faulkner 65). Homer was not gay; he wasn’t dating Emily and taking her on trips every Sunday to cover up his homosexuality. The only thing wrong with Homer was that he was from the North. Knowing that Homer might leave and that the townspeople would not stop talking, Miss Emily decided to kill Homer. This way Homer could be with her forever, and the townspeople would not ever think to assume anything except that Emily set her head straight and got rid of him.

Homer Barron was a good man and Emily Grierson was a good woman. Although her overbearing and protective father left her confused about men, she knew what she wanted and she did want a relationship like everyone else before she became too old. The town would not let her have this though; they would rather her be single and suffer as long as she didn’t distort their view of the perfect town idol. Emily was in fact put on a Pedi stool and for her to be happy meant the crumble of the rest of the town. Emily had to do it; she had to kill Homer…it was the last resort.

Emily and Homer were destined to be together, but due to unfortunate circumstances it could never happen. Emily could never marry regardless and especially could never be married to a Northerner, so that was it; Miss Emily was destined to be alone and live with Homer’s remains forever. “The body had apparently once lain in the attitude of an embrace, but now the long sleep that outlasts love, that conquers even the grimace of love, had cuckolded him” (Faulkner 67).

AIM

To investigate how the length of a simple pendulum affects the time period for a complete swing (oscillation).

VARIABLES

To keep the investigation as simple as possible, only two variables are going to be changed.

Order custom research paper on Planning for a pendulum investigation

essay writing service

Independent Variable

This is the length of the pendulum; it is independent, as it is not affected by other variables.

Dependant Variable

This will be the time period (of one oscillation); it is dependant on the length of the pendulum.

Control Variables

These variables will remain the same throughout the investigation in order to ensure a fair test.

· Mass of bob

· Angle of initial displacement (è)

· Medium through which the bob swings (air)

· Gravitational pull

RANGE

The ranges of our results depend on the length of the pendulum. The shortest length possible will be determined when measuring the time period becomes highly inaccurate or even impossible. The longest length possible will be determined when the pendulum is unable to swing in a full oscillation (due to space).

Data points will be collected at regular intervals and about eight data points will be collected.

APPARATUS

The equipment we will use

· Retort Stand To hold apparatus stable

· Boss and Clamp To hold the pendulum

· Pendulum (String tied to a bob)

· Protractor To measure the angle of initial displacement

· Ruler To measure the length of the pendulum

· Digital Stopwatch To record the time period

SAFETY

Some safety measures will have to be taken into account. It is important that all equipment is secure so that it will not fall over, or off, during a test. Particularly the pendulum must be tied securely and the retort stand must be stable on a flat surface.

METHOD

After the apparatus was set up as shown before, the pendulum was set to a pre-determined length. This was measured using a ruler taking into account that the measurement should be taken from the centre of the bob upwards. After the pendulum was set, it was pulled back 45° using the protractor and released. As it was released the stopwatch was started. We took one oscillation to be when the pendulum passed its original point of release. After five oscillations the stopwatch was stopped. This was repeated for the other lengths.

ACCURACY

There are many actions we can take to improve the accuracy of the investigation.

· Repeat readings will be taken and the average of the readings noted.

· Any anomalous data will be unused and the reading will be taken again.

· Instead of simply timing one oscillation, we will time five and divide the result by five to get our reading. This greatly reduces any errors caused by reactions (i.e. starting and stopping the stopwatch).

Please note that this sample paper on Planning for a pendulum investigation is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Planning for a pendulum investigation, we are here to assist you. I have reached a state of thinking that has set me aside from most human beings. I now believe that I am free. I am free to think what I want and do what I feel is right. This way of thinking has come to me not by some sort of magical communication with a higher being but by a clear and concise understanding that I dont know anything. Because I dont know anything I cannot preach anything to anyone. I do not want to influence anyone, I do not want to convince anyone. How ever I am willing to discuss everything with anyone. There isnt anything in this world that is concrete, nothing that I can say is explainable. I cant even say why we wake up each morning. All kinds of scientists will tell you the biological or scientific reasons behind life and how we breath but none will be able to explain why we breath and why we are here. The same goes for all religions all will quote some sort of book and will quote every solid piece in it. The minute there is a hole its back to the unexplained, faith. What

most people dont realise is that human beings have existed for thousands if not millions of years (this is an assumption, Explanation later) and for some reason we have always needed a higher being to look up to, pray to, give thanks to. Where are the religions that have thousands of instant preachers. Why do all of them have to mean the following of one persons interpretation of a message received from a higher being. Why is it that most of them mean following blindly. Why is there no concrete evidence. I read something in a book once, incidentally I dont rely on books very often choosing to formulate as much of my own opinion as I can. The book said, GOD is NOT THE AUTHOR OF CONFUSION and I dont think he/she/it would be if indeed there is such a thing. So why then is religion so complicated and confusing.

Religion contributes to too many of todays misfortunes, misery, hate and discrimination.

I have no religion yet I believe in the existence of higher being or beings. I hate no one whilst loving as many as I can. I try not to harm and cause misery to none. I try not to be discriminated against whilst trying not to discriminate myself.

To live life is to have Passion for living. To love life is to live life to the fullest. Live your life with as much passion as there are stars in the sky. The stars will not disappoint you as they are bursts that have twinkled years before you.

A common theme of medieval literature is the rigorously defined features of morality and virtue as set by society and the implications these definitions have on the people living in the time. This major emphasis put on society’s elevated expectations of men and women could be a direct result of the corrupt power assumed by the Catholic Church of the time. The Catholic Church’s main purpose seems to have been the gain of money and power at the expense of its followers. For example, one of the main methods of gaining revenue was the selling of indulgences, or pardons for sins. Obviously, it would be in the church’s best interest to hold high standards of morality and take a literal interpretation of the Bible in order to establish the maximum amount of acts as sins for which one would need to buy a pardon. Additionally, this literal interpretation of the Bible resulted in a very mechanical way of thought.

Another theme or aspect of medieval culture perhaps established by the Catholic Church is the patriarchal society which depicted men as honorable and women as disgraceful and rebellious to society’s definition of an honorable woman. Selected quotes from Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale will be used to exemplify the reactions to society’s definition of honor, women’s second class role in society, and the hierarchy designed by characters of these works which depicts levels of human achievement of virtue and perfection.

Honor in medieval society reflected the pressures to maintain a chivalric and virtuous display against all characteristics of human nature. For example, Beowulf says to a saddened Hrothgar who just lost his highest counselor to Grendel’s mother, “Grieve not, good man. It is better to go and avenge your friend than mourn overmuch.” Beowulf is clearly portraying society’s expectations for men to ignore their very human trait of grief in exchange for avenging one’s honor in battle, reflecting a very militaristic view of human emotion. Additionally, Hrothgar returns society’s emotional challenge to Beowulf when he reminds him, “Be mindful of fame; make your might known.” Hrothgar is reminding Beowulf to forget his human will to live and pursue first glory and fame, which will leave his legacy in honor. This theme can also be referenced to in Sir Gawain’s dilemma between being chivalrous to the lady and accepting her advances and gifts in secrecy versus maintaining his honor and virtue to the Lord in keeping his promise of exchanging the day’s winnings. The Green Knight reminds Sir Gawain that “True men pay what they owe,” upholding a very mechanical view of “all or nothing,” which ignores Gawain’s internal conflict of keeping society’s expectations. This internal conflict is documented in Gawain’s thoughts, “…either take her tendered love or distastefully refuse. His courtesy concerned him, lest crass he appear, but more his soul’s mischief, should he commit sin and belie his loyal oath to the lord of that house. ‘God forbid!’ said the bold knight, ‘That shall not befall!’” Although less obvious, the pressure of maintaining honor is also present in The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale. In contrast to the male characters discussed thus far, the wife of Bath and the women depicted in her tale, however, ignore the pressure to be virtuous because they disagree with society’s definition of honor and virtue. For example, medieval society expected women to marry and be a servant to their husbands. In the wife of Bath’s tale, however, the knight reports, “Wommen desire to have sovereinetee as wel over hir housbonde as hir love, and for to been in maistrye him above. This is your moste desir, though ye me kille.” The women’s desire to remain sovereign over their husbands clearly opposes society’s definition of an honorable woman serving her husband. Additionally, the wife of Bath opposes society’s view of an honorable woman being chaste with her statement of promiscuity, “I wol bistowe the flour of al myn age in th’actes and in fruit of mariage.”

The males’ quest for societal honor and the females’ rebellion to it is a notable theme throughout medieval works.

Buy custom Honor As Displayed in Medieval Works term paper

essay writing service

The contrast between male and female attributes of honor discussed from the previous quotations may reflect women as a second class in society rebelling to its captivity. This patriarchal society can be noted in each of the works discussed. For instance, in Beowulf, Grendel is given a name but his mother is not. Grendel’s mother is referred to in light of her son’s name, giving her minimal importance. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Gawain blames women for his failing, “…and commend me to that comely one, your courteous wife, both herself and that other, my honored ladies, that have trapped their true knight in their trammels so quaint...and one and all fell prey to women that they had used; if I be led astray, methinks I may be excused.” Perhaps this quotation can be given direct reference to the story of Adam and Eve, in which Adam’s sin is explained through Eve’s cunningness rather than his fault. This leads thought to provoke that the Catholic Church’s teachings are at least partly responsible for women’s second place in society. Finally, in The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale, the wife of Bath is arguing against a society that leaves women to the susceptibility of their arranged husbands, as a twelve year old version of herself once was. She also tells of her marriages and how she used her “cunningness” to deceive her husbands and gain the power that society purposefully withheld from her. Ironically, the women of medieval culture were seen as mischievous and unimportant when in actuality they were strong and fighting an almost impossible battle against men, who regarded battle as honorable.

The characters portrayed in the selected medieval works seem to represent a hierarchy of human achievement of nobility and perfection as defined by medieval society. For example, Beowulf represents the top of the hierarchy, representing practically unachievable success as a brave hero. Sir Gawain, on the other hand, represents a more humane aspect of a hero, incorporating human fault, but remaining a member of the nobility. The Wife of Bath, however, represents a contrasting view of achieving society’s definition of honor and virtue. She is admittedly imperfect, but proud and regretless of her “faults,” at least as they are defined by society. Lastly, the Knight in the Wife of Bath’s tale represents the bottom of the hierarchy; he is a man seen as high society, but in all actuality is a criminal committing sexual crimes. It is through this hierarchy of virtue that the reader can relate to the characters, as well as realize their own strive to achievement in our society.

The medieval period is marked by its high standards of morality and honor which is conveyed through the quotations discussed, acknowledging the effects of these standards on everyday people. Although honor and virtue are important to human development and spirituality, perhaps the Catholic church put too much of an emphasis on it- to the effect of victimizing their followers by forcing them into fear of damnation and ignoring their very human nature.

In the past, I would wait until the very last minute to study for a test. In high school this method worked quite well for me since I was actively participating in class throughout most of the semester and taking good notes. Now that I am in college this method is no longer effective for me. After trying different methods of study that I read on the internet or heard from friends, I finally found a method that works for me. Studying effectively for a test involves four basic steps.

First step is to ask questions. As soon as a test is announced ask question that will help you too studying effectively for the test. What is on the test? Is it essay or multiple choices? How many questions will there be? Will it cover lectures and or the textbook? Ask as many questions as you feel necessary to get a better grasp on what material you need to go over. Now that you what is on the test you’re ready for the second step.

Second step plan ahead. Figure out how much time you will need to study for each subject. Which subject has highest priority? How much time will you have for each subject a day? What other obligations do you have during the week of exams? Where will you study? Now that you have a plan it is time for the following step.

Custom writing service can write essays on Studying for test effectively

Third step organize the material you must study for the test. For your memory to work effectively group together relate main ideas and concepts. Start by identifying key concepts and theories. Next, identify related formulas and explain the meanings to the formulas in your own words. Then, interrupt any graphs or charts in your own words to increase your understanding. Since you have organized all your studying material you are now ready to move on to the last step.

Fourth step apply the material you must study for the test. Once you have organized your notes, you must apply the information so that you retain it in your long-term memory. Rewriting notes, talking to your friend and family about the subject, and matching and grouping concepts are some examples of how to apply the material you are studying. You can also make up your own game for recalling facts and to match and group concepts.

Waiting till the night before the test is not an effective way to prepare for a test, especially if you do not have a plan. Studying for a test need not be stressful, relax and take adequate breaks between studying. And Remember to follow the four basic steps to effective studying, ask what will be on the test, plan your study time, organize your studying materials, and practice in order to memorize. Following these simple steps is a surefire way to earn a good mark on a test.

An important type of social influence is conformity. Conformity occurs when someone voluntarily performs an act because others are doing it. That is, by conforming, someone is acting at odds with ones beliefs or perceptions because other people are acting in that way. From this stems two opposing views of influence, majority and minority influence.

The brilliant series of experiments carried out by Solomon Asch (15) is a great example of majority influence. Asch was not the first investigator to study conformity, but his approach was the most direct and dramatic. He reasons that perhaps conformity occurred in only rather ambiguous situations, when people were quite uncertain about the correct standard of behaviour was. He thought that if the stimulus situation was clear, there would be little or no conformity as people would trust their own perceptions and remain independent. essaybank.co.uk

Five students arrived to take part in a study of perception. They sat around a table and were told they would be judging the lengths of lines. They were shown a white card on which three black lines of varying lengths had been drawn and a second card containing one line. Their task was to choose the line of the first card that was most similar in length to the line on the second. One of the lines was exactly the same length as the standard, whereas the other two were quite different from it. When the lines were shown, the subjects in turn answered aloud in the order in which they were seated. Since the judgement was so easy, there were no disagreements. A second set of cards were shown, responses were given and a third set was produced.

At this point, the experiment really started. The first four subjects gave the wrong answer. When it was time for the fifth subject to respond, he was quite disturbed. He was confused as he didnt know whether to trust his own judgements or go with the majority.

Custom writing service can write essays on conformity

essay writing service

Under these circumstances a third of people sitting in the fifth position gave the wrong answer. They agreed with the others even though they knew it was incorrect. This error rate takes on significance when we realise that other subjects tested alone on the same stimuli get the answers right on all but about percent of the cases.

Variations on Aschs original study showed the following interesting points

a). Conformity increases when the task is ambiguous.

b). Conformity decreases when performance on a task by a naive person is supported by the behaviour or performance of a confederate or ally.

c). The uniformity of the group is more important than the size of the group. In fact, Tonford and Penrod (184) found that the relationship between the size of the group and conformity is S-shaped.

d.) Conformity decreases if subjects answered on a piece of paper.

The conformity, and especially the discomfort seen in these experiments illustrated the powerful social influence that results from our assumption that other people perceive the same world as we do. People conform for basically two reasons, the desire to be right which is called informational influence and the desire to be liked which is normative influence.

Informational influence is the degree that people are influenced because they accept the other subjects as sources of information about the word. Our tendency to conform based on informational influence depends on two aspects of the situation how well-informed we believe the group is and how confident we are in our own independent judgement. The more we trust the groups information and value their opinions in a situation, the more likely we are to go along with the group. Anything that uncrosses confidence in the correctness of the group should increase conformity, and conversely, anything that leads us to doubt the groups knowledge or trustworthiness should decrease conformity.

Occasionally we feel its more important to maintain other peoples positive regard. This type of influence by normative reasons is called normative influence. Sometimes we conform to gain the approval of the group, in other times we do so to avoid disapproval. In growing up, people often learn that one way to get along with the group is to go along with group standards. the fear of being deviant is justified by the group s response to deviance. When someone does not go along with a group, that person becomes the target of efforts to bring them in line, and ultimately risks rejection.

Conformity to majority patterns is a basic aspect of social life. But our emphasis on the power of the majority should not blind us to the importance of minority influence. The important social movements of our times have all begun with small numbers of people who challenged the existing assumptions of the majority. The Civil rights, womens rights, and gay rights movements had their start with small numbers of people convinced that their positions were better in accord with moral facts of the matter than were in the views of the majority.

Moscovici (16) proposed that the behavioural style of a minority is important. His research procedure, was like an Asch experiment and involved having subjects making judgements in the presence of the group. He showed subjects different coloured slides, which were unambiguous and members of groups of six were asked to name the colour of the slide. Now all the slides were blue but varied their luminance. In a control group, all six subjects were naive, that isnt to say there were no confederates opposing the majority, virtually all the slides were described as blue. In the experimental group, however, two confederates were employed who consistently labelled the colour of the slides green. Subjects had previously been told that all group members had normal vision, so they could not suggest that what appeared to be incorrect responses was due to colour blindness. With this minority pressure, about a third of the subjects reported seeing at least one green slide, and 8 percent of judgements were the slides were green. Clearly, the minority view had a noticeable effect on the naive majority.

The consistent minority, affected subjects in two quite different ways. First, it caused some of the subjects to change their overt responses, a direct effect. Secondly, it affected a larger number of subjects by causing them to alter the way they looked at the blue-green distinction. It caused them to broaden their concept of green, a so-called latent effect of minorities.

Nemeth et al (174) argued that rigid consistency is not necessary to influence. What is important is that the minority seem coherent and certain. She repeated the Moscovici experiment but made one of the confederates alter his judgement after every slide.

Minorities have more influence when their position is taken seriously and seen as reflecting certainty and competence. People who are influenced by a minority are thought to experience conversion rather than mere compliance; that is, they dont simply conform in public, but they also experience a change in their private convictions.

To conclude, people are influenced by the majority so they can be right and make a good impression on others. Minorities influence with consistency, both over time which is called diachronic consistency and with each other or synchronic consistency. A consistent minority is effective because it is coherent, it disturbs the group norm(s) by creating conflict and it has an innovative impact. Those who can do this have an envied talent.

There were several ideas that had been communicated through the novel A Soldier¡¦s Tale by M.K. Joseph. One major idea that had been expressed by Saul Scourby is that cruelty and mercy share the same human heart. A second message that had been demonstrated by Belle is that life and love offer hope. The entire background of the novel displays the third idea - war changes the lives and values of those it affects.

The idea of cruelty and mercy share the same human heart is revealed in the novel. The main character Saul Scourby contradicted this idea throughout the novel. A moment where cruelty is exhibited is when Saul chose to rape Belle. ¡§Let me choose, Saul, I could like you.¡¨ This act of Saul¡¦s had completely diminished Belle¡¦s worth and as if she was a possession that he could just do anything with at any moment. On the other hand, Saul also unceasingly displayed acts of mercy. An example would be where he lets Belle dream about their future. ¡§How many children shall we have? She asked. Three, he said promptly.¡¨ This response from Saul had made Belle optimistic again. This meant that she would be able to imagine herself living till that day and by that time, she wouldn¡¦t have to live in fear and misery any more. However, Saul was both cruel and merciful when he killed Belle in the end. ¡§She groaned and fell on the cold flagged floor and began to kick and scrabble like an old dog dying in the road.¡¨ This act by Saul was considered to be cruel and merciful. From one point of view, Saul was probably very cruel as he had the cold heart in him to kill a woman that had been good to him. However, another view would be that he did not want her to suffer from the Yanks and the French Resistance to was trying to save her because he felt sympathetic for her. Hence, it is evident that humanity is flawed which means that there is evil at the heart of all human kind.

A second idea that is displayed in the novel is life and love offer hope. ¡§Where there is life there is hope.¡¨ A moment where this idea is shown in the novel is when Saul was trying to convince the priest that Belle should not be killed and instead be tried first ¡V ¡§If she¡¦s really done something wrong, then put her in gaol, let her be tried.¡¨ This clearly shows that life is the most important thing that we should grasp on to in order to have even the slightest possibility of having a better future. This concept is significant because life is the root to any hope. Similarly, love offers hope give the same perception. This is because where there is life there is hope. Therefore, where there is love there is hope. This message is conveyed throughout the novel by the relationship between Saul and Belle. ¡§We¡¦ve been married so long, she said.¡¨ The quote exhibited the special connection between Saul and Belle. It was for Saul¡¦s caring love that made Belle believe that there was still hope somewhere. It was due to her love for Saul that kept her optimistic till the end. Hence, life and love offer hope.

The third idea that is conveyed in the novel is that war changes the lives and values of those it affects. War alters people¡¦s lives in all different ways and one good example would be marriages. ¡§We¡¦ll marry, he said.¡¨ This simply show that men will want to get married as soon as possible hoping that they would have lived their life in the 4 hours of compressed time just before the commencement of war. However, their love will not be true love and instead only a desperation for connection. People¡¦s values will also be majorly affected by war and an example would be national pride. This is because there will be increased loyalty from the army and less tolerance for differences. ¡§And all the time the Germans were coming and coming, and you British ran away.¡¨ This quote revealed the result of national pride being affected, which meant that the recognition of enemies would be increased. Hence, war will always in some way change those that it affects.

Tan, Two Kinds and My mother’s English

At one point in most children’s childhoods they are pressured by their parents to be something they don’t really want to be, or do something they don’t really want to do. Whether the pressure is in sports or intellectually, expectations to be the best can really get to a child. These pressures only increase as children grow older. I know that I always felt pressure just like the girl in the story. I felt the need to be the best. Not only for my own satisfaction, but also for my parent’s satisfaction. Pressure can be placed on someone directly or indirectly. I think in my case it was usually indirectly. My parents never told me they expected me to come to college and maintain a GPA over a 4.0, but I just knew that if I didn’t, they would be disappointed. In Two Kinds, the girl can’t handle her mother’s pressures that were directly enforced anymore, and makes the decision that she will not be what she’s not, and that she would not let her mother change her. Eventually, after the girl purposely answered questions wrong and acted bored by her mother’s antics, her mother finally began to give up hope. However, this did not last long. Soon enough the girl’s mother bought a piano for the house and made her take piano lessons. The girl hated playing the piano, and hated it even more because her mother forced her to learn, but more importantly, because she wanted her to play so bad. After a horrifying incident occurs in the story, the mother made one last attempt to make her play the piano, and after a heated argument and Ni Kan’s refusal, the piano was never brought up again. The girl’s failures continued throughout her lifetime. She was not a genius, and she was far from perfect. She was pretty much just the same as the rest of us. She was who she was and there wasn’t much she could do to change that.

Tan’s depiction of a mother/daughter relationship in Two Kinds is one I think most people can relate to. Maybe not to such an extreme extent, but I think most children have been pushed, or have known a friend that has been pushed way too hard. The fact that this story is easily relatable is one of the many reasons that made chose this as my essay topic.

Picking the proper ingredients is the first step in making this simple dish. You will be needing a pack of lasagna noodles, half a kilo of ground beef, 750 grams of tomato sauce, one head of garlic, an onion, half a cup of butter and flour, a pack of all purpose cream and lastly cheese, preferably quick melt. Check the grocer’s shelf for a wide variety of these items.

After purchasing the ingredients, the second step is making sure that your kitchen has the necessary equipment for making baked lasagna. Find a pot that is large enough to fit the lasagna noodles. Next, find a saucepan, a whisk, and Pyrex. When you have gathered all these, you are now ready to cook.

Boil the lasagna noodles in a pot making sure that the water covers the noodles completely. Then add salt and oil. Let it boil for fifteen minutes; do not overcook the noodles. Noodles are less palatable when soggy. Next, saut the garlic and onions in oil and add the ground beef. Cook until you notice a change in color, that is, from light red to brown. Then, carefully add the tomato sauce and let it simmer until slightly thick. For better taste, you may also add herbs and spices like oregano, basil, Italian seasoning, and marjoram herbs. Just pick two or three that best suits your taste buds.

Making the bchamel sauce is a crucial step. Melt butter in saucepan and add flour. Be sure to add EQUAL amount of flour, you would not want your sauce to be too thick nor too watery. After making the “roux, (butter and flour cooked together to a brown paste used to thicken and color sauces) add the cream and using a whisk, mix until all lumps are removed. If mixture becomes too thick, that is no problem, just add hot water.

When you are finished making the bchamel sauce, you are now ready for the fun part assembling the lasagna! Prepare large Pyrex and layer the ingredients in this manner first the noodles, followed by the meat sauce, then the bchamel sauce and lastly, the cheese. Continue layering the lasagna until it reaches the top of the Pyrex. Add a generous amount of cheese for every layer for a creamier result.

Bake the lasagna in 50-degree oven. (Setting your oven to the wrong temperature will lead to disaster!) You will know when it is ready when the cheese starts to bubble. When it does, take a knife, slice it into 1 equal parts, and serve with garlic bread! Bon A petit!
