He soon befriends a sailor, who is Ivo’s cousin Mauger, that soon bashes him over the head and robs him of all his money. While Berold is distraught, he accidentally wanders into the street where he is almost ran over by Stephen. He tells Stephen his story and Stephen invites him to sail to England on the White Ship. Stephen soon decides not to go on the ship, but with a young girl named Amabel from Southampton.


The White Ship soon sinks killing everyone, including the king’s son, except Berold. So the king decides that Maude, his daughter, will be his successor.


Chapter - Starts with two sisters Marthe and Barbe. Marthe, also known as Mirabelle, is a prostitute who is secretly seeing Lord Geoffrey who is married to Lady Maude. Later that night, Maude and Geoffrey get into a fight and Maude pulls a dagger out on him. This upsets Geoffrey greatly and he claims that the marriage is over. Maude is devastated by this claiming that her father would never forgive her. So she writes letters to her father explaining the horrors she had to go through, but her father still blames her for being casted out of Anjou by Geoffrey.


Chapter - Bishop Henry tries to persuade Henry to take the crown instead of Maude, because he feels that it is wrong for a woman to become king. Also, Maude finally gives birth to a son, whom she named Henry.


Chapter 4- Ranulf, Gilbert, and Ancel visit Sybil with a proposition for her to seduce Baldric Fitz Gerard so he can be gone for good. But to do this her disguise would be a nun, so Ranulf tries to steal a nun’s habit from the nunnery but gets caught and taken to The Tower where Stephen bails him out. Also, later on Ranulf reveals to Stephen that he wishes that Stephen were going to be king instead of Maude.


Chapter 5- Ranulf and his friends find out that King Henry died and Maude is pregnant once again with a third child. Also, Maude soon learns that Stephen has claimed the English Throne and she is in utter disbelief. King Henry died on Monday, Nov.5 from Lamprey eels.


Chapter 6- Matilda finds out about Stephen being crowned and she and others begin to share doubts over Stephen being a better ruler than Maude. It is also said that his only being able to see things the ways he wants to see it is likely to bring him down. Annora gets angry with Ranulf for taking maudes side instead of Stephen’s and while fighting in Lisieux, Geoffrey gets shot in the foot with an arrow and he is so angry that he claims that the campaign is over and that he is going back to Anjou.


Chapter 7- Stephen realizes that even though he is king, he has lost respect and his honor from the people and the only person that he can trust now is Matilda. Ranulf finds out that Annora is married to Gervase Fitz Clement and he is infuriated by this.


Chapter 8- Stephen takes over Shrewsbury and hangs its garrison, while Matilda takes over Dover Castle. They both get what they want and Stephen is gaining back a little respect from his people.


Chapter - Stephen gets word that the Bishop of Salisbury might be Maude’s way of taking over the crown, so he invites the people of Salisbury, Lincoln, and Ely over, knowing that they would brawl, and soon has them arrested for being “Enemies of the Crown”. Soon Maude gets Arundel castle and is prepared to claim her crown. She remembers the day as “an August afternoon in the inner bailey of Argentan Castle”. The arrests took place on Midsummer’s Day - April 4th


Chapter 10- Arundel is taken under siege, but Stephen lets Maude go claiming all debts are paid in full. Stephen besieges Brien’s Castle in Wallingford causing massive destruction creating a time that people referred to as “When Christ and his Saints Slept”.


Chapter 11- Ranulf goes to Shrewsbury and finds Annora and they decide that when Maude becomes queen that they will be rightfully married the way they should have been in the first place. One night, Henry is getting his father’s dagger accidentally overhears his father and another woman talking about Maude not coming home.


Chapter 1- Stephen takes over the Lincoln Castle, but the Earl of Chester seizes it back and asks for Maude’s aide. So now there is going to be a siege for the crown and whether or not it will be Maude’s or Stephen’s is likely to soon be determined.


Chapter 1- The Battle of Lincoln is beginning to start, but on Candlemas when Stephen hand s the candle to the Bishop, it breaks and the people take it as an ill omen. Also, in Robert of Gloucester’s army, he has knights called the “Disinherited”. They are given this name because they have nothing to lose. Soon during the battle, Stephen surrenders to the Earl of Gloucester and the Battle of Lincoln is now over. The Welsh spoke in tongues Welsh, French, and Flemish.


Chapter 14- Maude finds out that she has won the war and is overjoyed, while Matilda worries for Stephen’s safety.


Chapter 15- Maude meets with Stephen and has him locked in Bristol Castle, but Stephen asks Ranulf to persuade Maude into letting him write a letter to his wife. Maude’s children soon find out that she is going to be queen and that Geoffrey will have to go to Normandy soon.


Chapter 16- Maude learns that Londoners do not want her as queen and also one of the bishops tells her that he forbids it, so she went off on him in front of everybody and now she needs to apologize, but her pride won’t let her.


Chapter 17- The Londoners take over the castle where Maude is, but thankfully she had a chance to leave before they came. Now the Londoners are ready to get rid of Maude and restore Stephen to king again.


Chapter 18- Matilda is ready to get Stephen his crown and she says that she’ll do whatever it takes, while Maude, on the other hand, is getting ready for her coronation which she wants to have at Winchester.


Chapter 1- Winchester is set on fire and the people are very distraught. But at the end of the chapter it is Matilda whom they see riding in.


Chapter 0- Winchester is still under siege and the people are starting to fear Matilda. Also, Ranulf and Gilbert survive the blazes, but John Marshall’s eye is dissolved from the molten lead of the burning church.


Chapter 1- Maude rides to Ludgershall Castle, but soon finds out that Matilda is coming there with an army, so she flees again. While Maude is thinking that Robert Earl of Gloucester has been slain or captured, he is with Matilda and she is going to use him to her advantage.


Chapter - Matilda decides to use Robert as ransom to get her husband, but he will not give in unless she frees the prisoners that were locked up with him. So Maude has a plan of her own to use Stephen as ransom for Robert.


Chapter - Stephen and Robert are released from prison and Maude now sees that there is really no hope for her to ever become queen, so she vows to continue to fight for the crown for her son Henry.


Chapter 4- Ranulf gets to meet with Annora again over Maud’s and he soon learns that Stephen has the flu and might die. Stephen recovers though and learns that Robert has left to meet Geoffrey and that Stephen plans to raid Cirencester so that maude’s guard’s will leave Oxford giving him a chance to capture her.


Chapter 5- Robert is in Normandy and Stephen raids Oxford claiming that he will not harm the citizens if he gets Maude. Maude now knows that there is no way out.


Chapter 6- Henry and Robert decide to get Wareham to divert Stephen’s attention so that they can rescue Maude. Now they have to lay siege to Oxford and it will be hard trying to save Maude now.


Chapter 7- Maude escapes and goes to Wallingford during the night with white cloaks as camouflage. Stephen is very angry to find that she is gone and when Maude arrives at Brien’s castle she is greeted by her son Henry on Christmas Day.


Chapter 8- Stephen offers to ransom William Martel for Sherman Castle, meaning that the war will have to last longer than everyone wants it to.


Chapter - On his way out of town, Ranulf saves two children (Jennet and Simon) from two bandits. The Children say that they are going to Cantebrigge and Ranulf offers to take them. Upon arriving there, Ranulf finds that Cantebrigge has been set on fire by Geoffrey de Mandeville.


Chapter 0- Maud miscarriages and Ranulf finds out that Annora had also. Everybody soon finds out that the Earl of Chester has decided to become an ally of Stephen’s which is very bad because he holds most of the lands.

Chapter 4- Maude son goes to fight Stephen and shocks everybody. Also Maud is pregnant again. Henry tricks Stephen into giving him money to go to Normandy and Henry has a plan to tell his mother good-bye and then come back and get Stephen.


Chapter 5- Ranulf goes to Shrewsbury to see Annora one last time and when he returns to the Devizes Castle he finds out that Gilbert is dead. Gilbert died from falling off of his horse.


Chapter 6- Maude sends Ranulf to talk to Robert to help cheer him up and when Ranulf arrives in Bristol he finds that Robert is dying. The last thing that Robert sees before dying is his grandson (Maud’s son).


Chapter 7- Maude needs to flee England and she is also given a gift from Brien Fitz Count. It is a pouch with a coin inside of it on a gold chain. On the rim of it, ‘Lady of English, the queen who might have been’ is engraved.


Chapter 8- Matilda learns from Eustace that Maude has gone to Normandy and is no longer a treat to them. Also, Geoffrey and Maude make a truce to try to be more docile to each other. She also gets to see her sons, but she has no idea where Ranulf is.


Chapter - Ranulf decides to face Gilbert’s widow and ask for forgiveness but when he stops at a watering hole he is attacked by two bandits. They stab him and they also kill his dog, Loth. He is saved though, by two Jews, Josce and Aaron, who fix him up and offer to give him a ride. They take him Blanminster so that he can go to the Welsh border where he says he will surely be welcomed by William Fitz Alan and soon depart, leaving him at his desired destination.


Chapter 40- Ranulf catches a severe fever later that night and wakes up with two Welshmen over him. He claims he has a message for Owain Gwynedd from the English king and they take him there. When asked about himself, he tells about his uncle Rhodri and his mother. He soon is very ill from his fever and thinks he is going to die but his family members take care of him. He soon finds out that his cousin, Rhiannon, who has been taking care of him, is blind and he can’t believe it.


Chapter 41- Ranulf is picking up Welsh very rapidly and begins his friendship of learning and new experiences with Rhiannon.


Chapter 4- Ranulf goes to visit Maud and his Welsh family fears he won’t come back. Ranulf does come back though, and they also learn that Henry is returning to England to be knighted but they know that there is more to the story than that.


Chapter 4- On May , Henry is knighted and surprise attack on Stephen is launched upon York. The most relied upon ally was Randolph de Gernons, Earl of Chester.


Chapters 44-58- Henry becomes Duke of Normandy right before his 17th birthday. Ranulf marries Rhiannon. Brien Fitz Count dies. Geoffrey takes Giraud Berlai. Eleanor decides to make Henry her new husband as soon as she can cancel her marriage with her husband for being related (even though she is even closer related to Henry). Geoffrey dies and Maude now understands that end the end he has won because his children weep for him more than they will ever do for him. Rhiannon gives birth and names the child Gilbert. Eleanor returns to her birthplace and marries Henry. Matilda dies on Saturday, May rd, 115 from sickness. Louis finds out about Eleanor’s marriage and is infuriated as well as confused and decides to summon them to his court for treason and he then pronounces war for them not showing up. The war soon ends with Louis as the loser and John Marshall shows just how unloving he is when he says he doesn’t care about Stephen saying that he will kill his five-year-old son. There is war again, but the Archbishop of Cantebury and the Bishop of Winchester form a truce. Eleanor gives birth to a baby boy on the same day that Eustace was dying in Ipswich from choking on lamprey eel the same way that Stephen’s father died. Stephen dies on Oct. 5, 1154 and Henry is named King. The story ends with Ranulf returning to Wales and seeing Henry and Eleanor for the last time.
