Change is What We Need
Change is what we, as Americans, need in order to become a truly prosperous nation. The change we need to make is in the African American communities. Tupac Shakur (1971-1996) was an influential rap artist that used his music to bring out the issues that plague the African American society. He was one of the first gangster rap artist and he was also one of the few that tried to get the society in which he lived to realize the problems in front of them. In his song “Changes” Tupac brings out many of the issues and problems that the African American communities has to deal with, from drug use to homicide and gun control. Throughout the song Tupac brings out references to all these issues and signifies that we as a country should try and change them. “It’s time for us as a people to start making some changes, let’s change the way we eat, let’s change the way we live, and let’s change the way we treat each other” (Shakur). Here Tupac is not saying that it this groups fought or that groups fought, but he is trying to emphasize that it is every ones fought and we as a nation should do something about it.
Crack Cocaine is a major drug in the African American culture and is a problem that is only getting worse. One aspect of the song refers to the use of drugs in the not just in the African American community but all over America. “Take the evil out the people they’ll be acting right cause both black and white are smokin’ crack tonight, given crack to the kids who the hell cares”(Shakur). Black males suffer from the addiction to Crack Cocaine more than any other race or gender. “Males are more than twice as likely to be regular users. A higher portion of blacks (3.1 percent) had used Crack Cocaine than Hispanics (1.6 percent) or whites (1.1 percent)” (Pinkney 177). “Of the nearly 500,000 regular Crack Cocaine users, more than 200,000 were said to be black” (Pinkney 177). Tupac really focuses on the fact that there is a problem with drugs and its not just here nor there but everywhere. “Although crack cocaine has been reported to be prevalent in the suburbs of New York and elsewhere, its damage has been greatest in the poor Black and Hispanic neighborhoods” (Pinkney 178).
“It’s war in the streets and the war in the Middle East instead of war on poverty, they got a war on drugs so the police can bother me” (Shakur). By this Tupac is really trying to get his audience concerned about what the government is doing to his community. By saying they got a war on drugs instead of a war on a much worse problem like poverty he brings out the fact that the government would rather punish people for a small crime instead of trying to help someone that is living on the streets or on welfare. “Cops give a damn about a nigro pull a trigger kill a nigga he’s a hero” (Shakur). Violence by cops on the African American community is just a small part of the big issue in crime and punishment.

“Homicide is the leading cause of death among black males between the ages of 15 and 24 in the united states” (Pinkney 152). On top of that “the rate for black males in the 15 though 24 age category is 7 times that for white males (86.6% versus 11.2%)(Pinkney 152). “I always gotta worry about the payback something rough that I roughed up way back” (Shakur). It is clear that Tupac is trying to reveal this issue of how he always has to watch his back because where he comes from one never knows when their time is coming and it comes quiet often in his community. Tupac’s wording in the lyrics suggest that no matter where he goes or what he does he can never get away from the paybacks.
Guns are by far one of the most relevant items that have an effect on the African American communities and society as a whole. “In 1990 there were more than 200 million civilian-owned guns in the United States, including some 60 million handguns. This adds up to more than 3 guns per family in 1885” (Pinkney 153). With all these guns circulating it is clear that one of the main problems in society today is that there are just to many guns and just about anyone can get a hold of one if they wish to. “Give’em guns step back and watch them kill each other” (Shakur). Tupac really hits the nail on the head with this statement in the song. “For males between 15 and 24 years of age, 3,187 (75 percent) of the 4,223 homicide deaths were caused by firearms in 1987” (Pinkney 153). Tupac exemplifies the problem by saying “as long as I stay black I gotta stay strapped” (Shakur). He is expressing that as long stays on the road he is traveling he has to be armed at all times just for protection.
In this song Tupac brought out many of the problems that he sees and lives in his life. The title of the song suggests, “we gotta make a changes” (Shakur). Change is the only way that we as Americans will ever truly prosper in this country or in this world.
