Kate Chopin, the author of the short story, “The Storm”, however, suggests that people can find another relationship outside marriage to seek their own passionate fulfillments. To her, these people are right and their action cannot be criticized because they do no harm to the people around them while they themselves can be happier with this fulfillment. Yet, I do not agree with her opinion that seeking another relationship outside marriage is acceptable.

If we are single, then looking for a relationship is never unacceptable. But once we get married, we have to commit and respect our partner. We must be responsible for the new family which we decide to build and develop together with our mate. Troubles may occur after marriage, but this is normal for any couple. Conflicts and arguments perhaps can break our happy life, yet we should wisely together find some ways to solve these problems. We cannot use it as a cause for our adultery. Some people advocate that they have affairs just because they want to have someone to understand them, or someone to help them forget the headaches that they usually have at home. They blame their husbands or wives for changing and often giving them headaches while they themselves have to take care of thousand things. They blame everything! Yet, they never think that they themselves are part of the household too, and thus should have some responsibility for taking care of the house. We complain that our mates are sometimes too annoying, but we should understand them because everyone may overact when he or she is in a bad mood. We should console and share their burden instead of being tired and bored hearing all these complaints and finally falling into adulterous relationships.
In “The Storm,” the relationship between Bobinot and his wife Calixta seems very normal and peaceful. They live in a small house and have a little son who is only four years old. They got married not long ago. There are no conflicts and arguments in this small family. And thus there are no reasons for Calixta to betray her husband. Her husband is a loving man. While waiting for the storm to be over, he buys Calixta a can of shrimps which she likes. He loves Calixta very much and there is no sign that he causes Calixta any troubles. So how can Calixta explain for her affair with Alcee, her ex-boyfriend? There is no adequate reason for her betrayal.

However, Chopin favors Calixta’s action and advocates that the affair can be understood because Calixta does not have a sex life as she desires. Even though Calixta married years ago, the moment when she is with Alcee, she feels like her first time. In this story, the problem perhaps is Calixta’s. The feeling when being with Alcee can be explain as the feeling which anyone will have when being with a new person.
The attitude and behavior of Calixta cannot be accepted with any reason. Today, besides blaming all troubles in the family as causes of affairs, some people advocate their immoral behavior by saying that it is their right to seek another relationship whenever they don’t have a sex life as desired in marriage. If we consider that they are right and that they should have the right to seek their own passionate fulfillments, we should ask ourselves if we deeply love our partner? I believe that people do not get married just for the purpose of sex. When we truly love someone, we want to take a good care of him or her, and to see him or her lives happily. Sex is just one thing that helps to construct the variety of our life. Yet, it is not the major reason for people to get married. Hence, betraying our lover for just this reason is totally erroneous. No one dares to state that though he sometimes has affairs, he only loves his mate. If we really love someone, then we never mind their imperfection and must be respect of him or her in all ways.
In brief, I think the affair between Alcee and Calixta is something that cannot be acknowledged and cannot be a model for any couple. I cannot support the suggestion of Chopin because I think marriage requires respect, commitment, and faith. To Chopin, affairs are short and quick like weather storms. Yet we should remember that any storm damages our lives in different ways. And so do affairs! Affairs can destroy our family like these evil storms.
