Everything seemed fine that day, November 24, 2001, that is. My daughter had been spitting up after every feeding, but I thought being a new mother, I was just being over dramatic. I called the doctor anyway and explained how she had been throwing up quite a bit. She told me to take her to the emergency room since it was a Saturday and the doctor’s office was closed. When I got to Saint Anthony’s, the emergency room doctor examined her and could not come up with a diagnosis. They said they would like me to take her Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital right away, because their hospital is better equipped for working with infants. It was about 8:00 p.m. when we headed to Cardinal Glennon’s. When we got there we ended up having to wait in the waiting room until 12:30 a.m. I was very upset because they ordered my daughter N.P.O. (which means nothing by mouth) so she couldn’t eat anything. That night it was getting so late the doctors decided to get the paperwork finished and examine her in the morning.

The next morning, which was Sunday, they called an ultrasound technician in because the ultrasound room is usually closed on Sundays. Once they did the ultrasound on her stomach they diagnosed Mackenzie with pyloric stenosis.

Pyloric stenosis is when the baby’s pylorus muscle is overdeveloped. It has such large muscles that food cannot leave the stomach. A baby with pyloric stenosis begins to throw up after every feeding. Sometimes the vomiting is “projectile.” The baby expels it with such a force it looks like Old Faithful is erupting. Surgery usually solves the problem. The muscle is split to open the food passageway. By the second postoperative day, the baby is able to tolerate feedings without pain or vomiting. One out of every 1,000 babies has this condition. Boys get it more often then girls, and they say the first-born son is most at risk. Don’t ask me why. I don’t know.

When I heard my daughter had to undergo surgery, I was devastated, I was heartbroken, I felt sad for her. All I could think is “she’s only six weeks old, she’s just beginning her life and already being put through surgery.” All the bad things that could possibly happen were flashing in and out of my head.

They planned the surgery for the next morning. Mackenzie has been going through hell the entire time. She has been starving for two and a half days now. The only thing keeping her from starving to death is the IV plunged into her arm with cardboard taped around it to keep her from pulling it out.

Monday finally rolls around and its time for surgery, 7:30 a.m. The surgery was originally scheduled for 10:30, but an earlier case was cancelled, so we were lucky. I walked her down to the operating room and had to say my good-byes. That half hour seemed like eternity. Everything went perfectly as planned. She was able to go straight to her room; in fact I was able to carry her up there myself. Six hours later she was drinking a bottle like nothing had ever happened. The next morning we got to go home. She’s been doing fantastic ever since.
