There are many people, fictional and real life, who can be considered as cultural
role models in today’s society. There is one group of people in particular that I would
like to focus on and that is the police officers of our communities.
They spend each day of their lives serving and protecting their communities.
Most of us see them as a hassle, slowing down our speed when we see a cop car up
ahead, paranoid that we will be receiving a ticket for our speeding. But when car
accidents do occur, police offers are of the first on the scene taking control of the
situation and organizing traffic around the potential hazard as well as getting the people
and vehicles out of there as soon and safely as possible. However they are there for one
reason and that is to prevent drivers from getting into accidents because of their speed.
Others challenge officers by stealing things from people that they feel they need or want
and sometimes they even get away with the crime. Eventually, though, the day comes
along and we will need the help of these ‘cops’ and will be terribly grateful they have
come to our rescue. An example is the high level of commitment made by the police
officers, and others, at the World Trade Center only a year ago. They made a point to
risk their lives to save innocent civilians who were injured by the collapse of the towers
and to save those who were trapped and buried in the debris. The officers from my rural
home town always made an effort to get to know everyone in our community. Even
those who make their jobs more difficult at times still know every cop by name, though
they really did not like them. These officers came to be because they felt the need to
keep our communities safe from those who steal our cars, break into our homes and hurt
us emotionally and physically.
They are strongly valued to me as role models because of their effort to protect
our society. Without their random check stops any one of us could be killed one night by
a drunk driver, who is either with us or in another car, going home from a night out with
family or friends. Which is why, when I got stopped at a check stop going home from
my first University of Manitoba social, I was glad that I had insisted that I would drive
home and not one of the other guys that I was driving home. They had both drank
enough to impair their walking and I insisted to drive them back to their place just in case
something happened. Since I don’t drink it was a lose-lose situation for him and I drove,
which was lucky for them because they would have definitely been in trouble of worse.
I admire their courage because it must take a lot out of them to do what they do
everyday. It must seem, at times, that it is not worth it until that moment when they
realize that because they were there it made a difference in someone’s life. A personal
example is when Cindy, one of our local cops back home, stopped my friends and I on
our way to a house party. She knew some of us weren’t wearing our seatbelts and she
warned us to put them on and to have fun at the party. We almost made it there but the
driver lost control on loose gravel down a back road and we fishtailed into the ditch. We
were graced with Cindy’s presence yet again and if she hadn’t stopped us before the front
passenger would have been out the windshield, but he left his seatbelt on, as did the rest
of us. We were all fine and to lighten a bad situation Cindy said ‘I told you so.’
I have become a better driver as well as citizen because of the police officers in
my community. I look up to them and think of them as everyday heroes. They put up
with quite a bit of, shall we say, nonsense from people who will be grateful for their
existence one day when they will need help. Police officers make our communities safe
so we can live our lives peacefully knowing that there is always someone out there
protecting us.
