The Mockingbird Will Sing No Longer

Introduction Adolescent lessons, burning houses, mysterious neighbors, a racial trial, and life lessons for all, To Kill a Mockingbird has it all. A female child, Scout, her older brother, Jem, and a friend from out of town, Dill, spend their summers spooking up all sorts of mayhem within their imaginations. They conjure up ways to entertain themselves in their uneventful southern town of Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression. The author, Harper Lee, uses a creative style of writing that seemed to illuminate the characters and their point of views. Lee takes an ordinary situation and adds a flare to it that puts a spark, or spunk, into what would have been just a bland character. She sets an image of a little girl following in her big brother’s footsteps, trying to be one of the guys while growing into a girl that her evil aunt wants her to be as she forms an attraction for her friend, Dill.

Synopsis Scout, a young girl in a quiet southern town, experiences the dramatic events that affect the rest of her life. She and her brother Jem are raised by their widower father Atticus and by a strong-minded housekeeper Calpurnia. Wide-eyed Scout is fascinated with the sensitively revealed people of her small town but, from the start, there is a rumble of thunder just under the calm surface of the life here. The black people of the community have a special feeling about Scouts father and she does not know why. A few of her white friends are inexplicably hostile and Scout doesnt understand this either. Unpleasant things are shouted and the bewildered girl turns to her father. Atticus, a lawyer, explains that he is defending a young Negro wrongfully accused of a grave crime. Since this is causing such an upset, Scout wants to know why he is doing it. Because if I didnt, her father replies, I couldnt hold my head up. As Scout and Jem grow throughout the story, they watch their hardworking father go through a gruesome trial of a black man accused of raping a white woman. The trial, though not forwardly stated, is the main issue of the story. The trial grabs Jem’s attention and shows him that there is more to life than playing with your friends and imagining what people that they never met are really like. His maturity is something his sister is confused about and dislikes. She decides either she wants it as well, or else he does not need it. While she tries to understand his new behavior, Scout spends time with the family’s black cook, Calpurnia, and is taught many lessons. With their father being forced to represent a case that he will never win, the family goes through tough times with the town and learns how to help each other out while sticking together. After the trial ends, Scout too realizes that there is more to just playing around in the streets, and takes action on her thoughts.

Personal Reaction To Kill A Mockingbird is about the crisis of human behavior and conscience arising from the racism and prejudice that exist in the small Southern town during the Depression. All in all, the book was pretty good. It is a much-beloved tale of growing up, as well as an exploration of heroism confronted with bigotry. Harper Lee chose an interesting way to write the story, which I enjoyed although the book was not my favorite, I am glad to say that I read it. A classic non the less, To Kill a Mockingbird teaches lessons of racial and ethnic relations, along with the lesson that you do not know or understand a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes.
