Talent is it natural or can be obtained by training is quite often a debatable question.

Identifying children with special talents and training them might well develop. But I am of the opinion that this need not necessarily be the case. The picture very lopsided. A first glance at the statement might force us to conlcude that training might give many gifted individuals to the society but we are missing the complemnetary sid of it.

Say we identify a a prticular person Ram to have a mellodius voice at an young age.

Now if one decides to train him in music it might very well be possible that he eventually turns out to be a great singer. But what if Ram’s interestes lied elsewhere. Ie We might end up curbing the interests of the person at an early age. It might be possible that after formal education he might turn out to be evn better in the filed of computer science and herald path breaking projects. This clearly demonstrates that the decision should be left to the person. It would be in the interest of both the individual and the society if that is done. In the above example Ram could have become a computer scientist and changed the way people are living. On the other hand he could have entertained the people with his vocal talent but then we would have missed the scientist in him.

Another issue that would be pertinent in this context is the productivity of training. Not every person who has a good voice becomes a great singer. Especially in the field of arts talent is something which would be inherent and persist throughout the life and if the person is interested he could pursue it at nay point of his career.

In sum I admit that elementary exposure is needed to children who have special talents but not to the extent of formal training. An individual’s freedom should be respected by the scoiety and be allowed to pursue whatever you want.

Enter Without so much as Knocking Analysis

Memento homo quia pulvis es et in pulverem reverteris

Remember man that you are dust and unto dust you shall return. This is significant because in Christian Ash Wednesday ceremonies, we are reminded that life began from the Earth and when we die, we return to the Earth.

Blink, Blink HOSPITAL SILENCE

This refers to the neon signs inside a hospital. The “blink, blink” part means that the sign is flashing. The “HOSPITAL SILENCE” is what the sign says. Therefore the poem begins with a neon flashing sign. This is important because the persona is born into a worls of flashing lights and signs that tell people what to do.

Ten days old…..Channel 7

The persona of the poem (the person that the poem is talking about) has been brought home to a consumer world. “Bobby Dazzler on Channel 7” refers to an old quiz show from the 160’s. His first memories are that of a television quiz show.

Hello, Hello ……. to him then

This is a satirical line (satire is making fun of something but not in an obvious way) because Dawe is saying that the persona is the lucky one because he didn’t understand the Bobby Dazzler show. This is Dawe’s way of criticising television.

Dawe satirises the way products are advertised by using the same labels to describe the persona’s parents. “One economy size Mum” is the way a washing machine or other appliance would be described. This is Dawe’s way of saying the mother is like an appliance to cook, clean etc. “One Anthony Squires….Dad” is the way a designer clothing label is described. This shows that a male in the family is the one to look good in public to project the image of a worker.

All of the third Stanza

This “consumer world” is highlighted in a number of ways. Firstly, Dawe refers to the “Luck’s a Fortch Tricky Tune Quiz”. This is Dawe’s way of commenting on the way people like to enter competitions on radio, television etc and win prizes. The equivalent of this today is Lotto, Powerball and scratchie tickets.

Secondly, the “good as new station wagon” is Dawe’s commentary on family life. He refers to the 160’s where parents would pack up the family in a station wagon and head off somewhere. These were the times when it was common to have eight or nine people in a car.

Thirdly, all of the signs mentioned are Dawe’s commentary on how we (as consumers) must obey signs and regulations. The equivalent of this today are the signs such as “1/ hour parking” and “no right turn” etc.

The “beeps” indicate two things

(a) The congestion of traffic where people are using their horns to indicate their frustrations

(b) The censoring of a swearing by replacing the offending word with “beep”.

Point of the poem

Dawe is quite simply saying that a human being cannot be born into a world, live in it and even die in it without being exposed to and affected by consumerism.

“DREAMS ANALYSIS “

I wanted to become an architect, not because I wanted to, but because they make lots of money. The more and more I thought about it, I realized that’s not what I want to do. I want something that suits me that includes my skills, my knowledge, and personality. That dream has passed or I should say died.

More years passed and I found something that really suited me, it’s what I wanted to be. I wanted and still do want to become a writer. I like to write and I can go on and on writing. I have had various encounters that has persuaded me to keep that goal.

I have noticed that my barren field is no longer desolate. However, it is growing. No snow, can stay frozen, it will have to melt someday, like mine. The sun has come out. Anyone can achieve anything if they put their minds to it, to every will there’s a way. There is a time for everything, in this case, for some people it just takes longer. but this is my story whether you like it or not. this is what ive got so get over it. but i lie any one who likes this dream analysis then you are alright. i wrote this thing in about an hour. hope you like it. so do you like it? this story is off of a poem that i had gotten and we had to write about the poem and what it meant to us. so thats why it might not make sense.

Macbeth commentary

This passage, page 11 line 1 to line 5 of scene four, is the moment the King first meets the brave and loyal Macbeth after the brutal and bloody battles meticulously described in the last scenes.

The king begins with a powerful statement, ¡§There¡¦s not art to find the mind¡¦s construction in the face¡¨ to describe the disloyal and executed Thane of Cawdor. The king then continues with ¡§on whom I built/An absolute trust¡¨. All together, the statements possess hatred and betrayal. However, dramatic irony seems to be hooked with the statements because they also apply to the brave Macbeth. Although Macbeth is noble in the eyes of the king for restoring his right order, his thinking is ignoble which we realize in Macbeth¡¦s aside at the end of this passage.

At their first encounter, the king greets Macbeth with such loyalty by addressing him as ¡¥my worthiest Cawdor¡¦, ¡¥O worthiest cousin¡¦. The king seems extremely jubilant and thankful that his ¡§sin of ingratitude even now/Was heavy on me¡¨. As a result, Macbeth replies with debt using the word ¡¥owe¡¦ and Banquo replies to the king ¡§There if I grow/The Harvest is your own¡¨.

Cheap Custom Essays on commentary on McB

essay writing service

Throughout the dialogue, Macbeth uses courtly language using words such as ¡¥humbly¡¦ and ¡¥harbinger¡¦. Between line and 7, Macbeth depicts what honorably to do because he mentions, ¡§Your highness¡¦ part/Is to receive our duties, and our duties/Are to your throne and state, children and servants¡¨. However, these wise words will not conquer Macbeths¡¦ thoughts.

Another significant aspect of this passage is the king¡¦s intention to metaphorically plant Macbeth and Banquo and cultivate their devotion. However, little does the king know Macbeth¡¦s ambitions, which might dominate his loyalty and sprout a flower of evil.

Since the king¡¦s state was gravely threatened, he announces his son to become the next king. The threats might be echoing in Duncan¡¦s mind that he names Malcolm as the next ruler.

As we skim through the short passage, we come across rhyming couplets at line 1 and 0 ¡§say¡¨ and ¡§pay¡¨; at line 50 and 51 ¡§fires¡¨ and ¡§desires¡¨; and at 5 and 5 ¡¥be¡¦ and ¡¥see¡¦. Other language techniques include alliteration at line 41 ¡§stars shall shine¡¨ and line 51 ¡§deep desires¡¨. Another literary technique Shakespeare using is ending words with the same letter such as in line 51 ¡§let not light¡¨ and line 5 ¡§Yet let that¡¨. Shakespeare uses many of these techniques to lock in the lines together and to produce sounds, which will attract the audiences¡¦ ears.

In Macbeth¡¦s aside there seems to be so much emotion compressed into a few monosyllable words with an iambic flow. As Macbeth reaches the end, his aside becomes an apostrophe because he is addressing the stars. A few lines ago, King Duncan also address the stars to set their heavenly light upon the two nobles Banquo and Macbeth. However, Macbeth pleads the stars to set no light upon his ¡§black and deep desires¡¨ which represent the sacrilegious murder. Since the King was thought of as chosen by God, his body was sacred and killing him would be considered as a profanity. Therefore, the King showed such honor when he offered his body to Banquo.

From Macbeth¡¦s aside we also learn that Macbeth has to murder Malcolm since ¡§That is a step/On which I must fall down, or else o¡¦erleap¡¨. The aside also portrays to us that Macbeth still possess conscience and consciousness because he does not want to admit to the cruel murder when it is done.

I think that Duncan¡¦s first words in this passage truly and beautifully define the cold world today. Betrayal leaves a deep painful scar but revenge is the sweetest joy, which will mend the wound and slaughter the fake friend who ¡¥win us with little honest trifles¡¦. Shakespeare does an excellent job with Macbeth¡¦s aside because the language is extraordinary especially the statement ¡§Stars hide your fires. . .¡¨

The short story “Desiree’s Baby”, by Kate Chopin, incorporates very interesting twists and turns capturing the reader’s attention, while provoking thoughts on issues deeper than the text itself. Kate Chopin depicts the ignorance and the stupidity of racism and chauvinism in a realistic way. These schools of thought openly blanketed past societies, and still live on in the present one. Chopin uses the husband’s racist sentiments towards African Americans against him by making him of that very race. By him having no knowledge of such lineage, Chopin allows his ignorance to show blatantly to the audience. Once he discovers that he is of that very race he despises, he better understands the ludicrous nature of racism. Chopin does a very nice job of making a point and telling an interesting story.

The descriptive language was beautiful and it helped to improve the story. Many phrases helped to thoroughly describe what was taking place, allowing me to better understand what was occurring. Detailed phrases, such as “…in silence he ran his cold eyes over the written words” and “She turned away like one being stunned by a blow”, helped me to better visualize what the situation was describing and to feel what the characters were feeling. The details also made the story more interesting to read because they add depth to story. Rather than just telling you what is occurring Chopin tells you how events unfold, what feelings the characters have during such events; all of which really allow a reader to get engulfed in the work.

Chopin addresses social issues with regards to race and gender in this story. Chopin is well known for her writing about gender related topics. In her novel The Great Awakening, she addresses women’s roles in society and relationships with men. In “Desiree’s Baby”, Chopin displays men as hypocritical, irrational individuals. By ending the story the way she did, Chopin shows racist men and women how ignorant they seem, as well as showing the consequences of taking action based on speculation not facts. Additionally she sends the message that men are just as responsible for the characteristics of a baby as women. Chopin uses her pen to indicate that irrational ways of thinking, whether it is chauvinism or racism, lead to injustice and unnecessary hardships for those discriminated against.

Formalistic Analysis of Dsire’s Baby The short story “Dsire’s Baby” is told by a third person omniscient point of view. The narrator, whose character or relationship to the story never receives any discussion, is a seemingly all-knowing observer of the situation. Although the narrator does not take sides towards issues that arise during the course of the text, her general view does shape the overall characterization of the white Southern society. The text exhibits interesting clues such as word choice, tone and mood, reappearing symbols and references that enrich the story and intensify its underlining message. The choice of French names and words reminds the reader of the stories’ setting and helps create an irony that is echoed throughout the text. Before the narrator explains the use of the French language and the settlers’ origin, it becomes evident that the characters in discussion are of French heritage. N

The 1th century was a difficult time for many women and blacks because of the domination of white men over them. The social and economic hardships they faced in day to day life was a constant reminder of this domination. The social ideology in the story “Desiree’s Baby” was powerful and dangerous and held no escape for any character. A woman with small children who lost her husband would face extreme hardships without the support of close family members. One who happened to be down on their luck would not find much sympathy among their peers even with children. Kate Chopin was one of these individuals who was down on her luck with six children. But fortunately had the support and comfort of her mother for a short period before her mother passed away. A friend advised this mother of six children that writing was a way to solve her problems concerning money and help deal with her grief. Maternal love and all the grief from losing loved ones were to be an attribute to the writing proficiency of this literary artist. This period in Louisiana was not tolerant for mixed ancestry and one found to be non-white would be ostracized from the white community. There were some whites in Louisiana who was not racist but they would still have to follow a strict code of segregation and social guidelines or risk social or bodily death. Kate Chopin was born fourteen years before slavery was abolished so must have had strong feeling on the subject. She no doubt saw mixed ancestry in the black communities and realized the cause of it. This story crosses the line into the covert world of mixed ancestry and the problems it produced. The racism in the story is not discussed openly but is prudently mixed in with Armand’s atrocious character and his evil soul. Armand’s evil was deep as he forsakes his loving wife, infant son, and God. The story some proclaim contributed to Chopin’s early success was “Desiree’s Baby” in this story she mixed many feminist emotions from maternal love, to a wife’s love and devotion to her estranged husband. During this period, some found it tolerable to leave a baby on the doorsteps of a family to provide a chance at a better life. This was an important point in the story when the Monsieur found the baby Desiree near the front gate, it would mean that Desiree would probably never be aware of her biological parents ancestry. The chance a baby with both parents would be dropped off is not logical but was probably a single mother. A single mother knew there was little help to be found and the child would be hard pressed for a descent upbringing socially and economically speaking. Desiree grew into a beautiful and gentle-hearted young woman and soon found a wealthy suitor asking for her hand. This young suitor had known of Desiree’s past but was in love and did not care of this seemingly innocent unknown factor of her past. This suitor, Armand Aubigny was racist and wretched but the young bride was in love and looked past his flawed character. The concept of young Armand falling instantly in love after seeing Desiree standing by the gate is a bit suspicious and sounds more like infatuation. The evil in Armand did not come from his parents and the black employees were cheerful when he was growing up so it is an open question concerning his acquired hatred. The blacks were cheerful while his father was alive but was not during Armand’s strict management of the L’Abri. Armand had changed to a kinder man after his marriage and the birth of his son and it may have been the only time in his life he was truly happy. The death of his mother while living in France when he was eight years old may have had a precarious effect on his character. The way Madame Valmonde described the L’Abri as “a sad looking place, which for many years had not known the gentle presence of a mistress”(1), may have been a hint at Armands evil nature being tied to having no maternal influence during most of his boyhood. Madame Valmonde noticed the baby’s mixed ancestry immediately when she went for a visit, exclaiming out loud at first sight of him “this is not the baby”(), Desiree thought she was referring to how big the baby had grown. Madame Valmonde looked closely at the baby and new that it was indeed of mixed ancestry but did not mention it to her daughter, this I believe was her way of hoping for the best. Madame Valmonde was wealthy but knew her influence would not be enough to help if anyone found out the baby was black. This would also mean certain social destruction for Desiree having given birth to a black child. The environment changed quickly on the L’ Abri and Desiree was not aware of the circumstances that had changed it. Her husband had recognized that the baby was not white and had turned into his old malicious self and was ignoring his family in vain. One of La Blanche’s quadroon boys was near the baby when Desiree noticed the resemblance of the skin color between the boy and her baby. Desiree confronted Armand and asked him to explain what the baby’s color meant and how it happened, Armand immediately and harshly accuses Desiree of not being white like the baby. The quadroon boy is one quarter Negro ancestry and so his mother La Blanch is also of mixed ancestry. This is important to know because Armand compares Desiree with that of La Blanch when he tells her she is not white. Armand was quoted as hearing the baby crying from “as far away as La Blanch’s cabin”(), the reason he was at the cabin could be he was using La Blanch sexually. This would explain the quadroon boys. The practice of raping a slave or employee in those days was not uncommon. Desiree compares her skin color to that of Armand who is much darker than she is but he is not bothered by this inconsistency in his reasoning. Desiree begged her mother Valmonde for help in explaining to everyone that she is indeed white. Valmonde did not respond to Desiree’s cry for help but just offered a place to stay for Desiree and the baby. This was a strong blow for Desiree who felt she was now isolated in her fight for justice against Armands unjust allegations. The struggle Desiree was trying to overcome was a losing one and mainly because of the dominance of men over women at the time. Armand did not relent in his persecution of Desiree and the baby. This demented individuals main goal was to crush the soul of Desiree and to punish God for what he feels was his unjust treatment. Desiree finally went to Armand one last time hoping that his psychotic episode would be over but Armand did not deviate telling her he wanted her and the baby to leave. The Crushed and broken Desiree finally made the fateful decision that there was no other life for her and the baby. This decision led to Desiree’s suicide and the baby’s infanticide alone in the bayou. There would be no social life or chance of a second family for a white woman with a black child during this time period. Armand’s psychotic episode continued and he burnt everything belonging to Desiree and the baby or that reminded him of them. Fear was something Armand did not know because he always had domination over everything around him, but with the baby being black he had social rejection to fear. It was during this episode that he discovered a letter from his mother to his father that revealed that it was indeed he who was black. God did enact the final revenge with the appearance of the letter. The story touches on several social issues that would not be talked about in specific places and times. The interracial conceiving of children, mans dominance over his wife, and whites dominance over blacks were all depicted in the story. In conclusion, the struggle for women and blacks continue and with changing social attitudes some things are improving for them but hatred and bias will be around for a long time

A Midsummer Nights Dream, the movie opens with a young lady named Hermia who falls in love with Lysander against her fathers will. The opening scene should be powerful but there is really loud background music, and unfortunately this tends to overpower the voices of the actors. Somehow you can manage to understand enough to know that Hermias father Egeus, orders her to get married to the character Demetrice whos in love with her. Hermia and Lysander flee the city to escape her father and Demetrice, riding into a dark forest. But Hermias best friend Helena who happens to be madly in love with Demetrice warns him, and Demetrice follows the couple into the forest. Seeking the love of Hermia, Demetrice follows. Seeking the love of Demetrice, Helena follows on as well. This complex web of desire should make the movie interesting and suspensful but unfortunately this doesnt quite happen. I think the bad lighting has something to do with this. Although the scene is set at night, one needs to see the faces to be able to appreciate the emotion. It was just too dark. This led to confusion as to what exactly was happening.

The story now attempts to amuse the audience. At the same time as the lovers are in the forest, there happens to be a play rehearsing in the forest. One of the actors of this play named Bottom suddenly is starting to turn into an ass. This does create some interest and there is curiosity as to who or what is making this happen. Unfortunately throughout this scene, which also includes Oberon , the Fairy King, Titania, the Fairy Queen, and Puck , Oberons servant, there is some bad acting. Much of the time, it is hard to hear what they are saying as they mumble. This makes ir difficult to follow the plot. If done well, the next part, which involves Titania falling in love with Bottom, the ass, as part of Oberons revenge, could be amusing and entertaining. I feel that the characters needed more personality to enable this to happen. Puck who is the best actor in the movie is the only one who really shows some enthusiasm.

Puck who has the magic flower, as well as causing Titania to fall in love with Bottom, has a mishap and causes Lysander and Demetrice to fall in love with Helena. Much confusion and fighting follow on. This scene creates interest. In particular the catfight between Helena and Hermia is dramatic and entertaining. The darkness and subtle lighting also creates the right atmosphere. Hermia and Helena acted very well in this scene and it was one of the best scenes in the movie.

Things eventually get sorted out, a three way wedding takes place involving, Hermia and Lysander, Helena and Demetrius, and the town duke, Theseus and Hippolyta. The play once rehearsed in the forest now gets to be acted out at the wedding. This play within the play is quite funny as things go wrong and mishaps occur.

One of the bonuses to this movie was the costumes, which helped to show the audience who the characters were. This was really important, as there were distinct classes of people, including Royals, fairies, mechanicals and the lovers. Also hepling to identify these groups of people were the different types of speech. For expamle, the lovers used rhyming couplets, and the Royals spoke in dignified blank verse. The costumes and voices helped the understanding of the characters and therefore the storyline to an extent.

There were some entertaining moments in this movie, however I think the overall direction of this movie was poor. Only a few sets were used and they weren’t very realistic. Also, the camera work at times was annoying, as many backs of heads were shown instead of faces. For example, when Oberon and Puck are forming the plan to seek revenge on Titania.

I didnt find this BBC version of A Midsummer Nights Dream very exciting or compelling. I think that the director would be dissapointed in what hes made of Shakespears famous play. There are other, more entertaining versions of this play to be seen.

Cheap Custom Essays on Illiteracy

essay writing service

Illiterate is defined in so many words yet with so little meaning to some and just enough knowledge for others to understand. But have you ever stopped and really thought about how it would have been to live your whole life without the capability of reading or writing? Well today I’ve done just that and for this moment not only have I allowed myself to be placed in the shoes of those who can’t read as well as in their state of mind.

As frustrating as it is already to accomplish a simple task because the many difficulties it consist of, but even more so when the most challenging is being a person with no knowledge at all. One example, is the task of driving which takes nothing more than the competence of reading in order to be done successfully. Specifically, the directions that you must read to get from place to place, that at times can already have its own complications. I find it quiet disturbing thinking about living in the country, almost in the middle of nowhere, with the nearest grocery store being an hour away. But what seems to be more troubling is having no clue about how to get there because of the directions which are impossible to read. Moreover, the signs that are put on every corner to prevent accidents or even saves lives, now makes driving for me perplexing.

Furthermore, a task that may come easy to me yet still so complex in its own way but if illiterate such a task would be absurd. Journalism, my hobby, my talent and my greatest interest, to be deprived of it would be like a person with the absence of an identity. Being able to write, for me, is the only form of communication and the best way I express myself. When beginning to write, I obtain the feeling of freedom, making what’s being written about that much easier. What makes it exigent, is not being able to interpret it for my reader. I wouldn’t know where to start for that matter how to start or which words to use and if so the word were used correctly. Journalism now recognized as one of the many “circumscribed existences“.

My main goal when I began college was nothing more than to become a psychiatrist. One who finds the prescription to a medication, solution to a troubled mind. In order to believe in this theory may just take hope. Otherwise, the need of study in psychology that creates formulas making it true. That alone takes a great deal of reading and how possible without the ability to do so. How is one supposed to fulfill the duty of a medicine doctor if all the labels look the same and have no knowledge of its purpose. Then there’s that famous signature to confirm every prescription, which would be real easy if I knew how to spell my name. What any use would I be in a field that required the part of me I didn’t have, in order to get the job done?

And all because I couldn’t read nor write.

Illiteracy, seen as a form of living but everything that makes up the concept of it doesn’t allow you to do so. Everything that life was worth living for is know deprived from you. Every goal you may have had or dream you may dreamed will know be replaced by what can only be your dream and goal...reading and writing. The most difficult task for the illiterate is living.

Many aspects of a child’s life determine the way in which one acts, matures and views life. I have found that one of the most influential elements of my life would be my mother, Svetlana Mazhukhina. She has been there for me when I needed her the most,

she taught me to read between the lines in every situation because there is usually more to a situation to what it seems. She helped me to realize that I would like to end up like her, courageous, motivated and wise.

Through out my short life my mother would be at my bedside every night telling me that there is more to life than just living.

She was the one to keep me strong throughout everything. If she ever saw that I was not coping she would take time out of work, time out of raising five teenagers and a baby to talk to me. She was the only person who made me feel like I was alive. It was nice to be put first once in a while.

When I look at the lyrics to the poem ‘The Wind Beneath My Wings’, the words become more and more relevant. It states that ‘you were content to let me shine, you always walked a step behind’. For quite a large portion of my life this was true. However, even though she was walking a step behind, it was as though she knew I was going to stumble and fall so she was there all along ready to catch me. Then it states ‘I was the one with all the glory, while you were the one with all the strength’. Only after the past few years have I seen Joanne’s strength shine. It has been evident through her courage and persistence. The main theme of the poem ‘I can fly higher than an eagle, coz you are the wind beneath my wings’, has been the main aspect of Joanne’s and my relationship. I can now be on the top of the world because she has taught me to be happy with myself.

The poem ‘I Said a Mother’s Prayer For You’ by John Robbins, is the way in which I show my appreciation to Joanne for everything that she has done for me.

‘I SAID A MOTHER’S DAY PRAYER FOR YOU’

I said a Mother’s Day prayer for you

To thank the Lord above

For blessing me with a lifetime

Of your tenderhearted love.

I thanked God for the caring

You’ve shown me through the years,

For the closeness we’ve enjoyed

In time of laughter and of tears.

And so, I thank you from the heart

For all you’ve done for me

And I bless the Lord for giving me

The best mother there could be!

I feel as though I cannot break this poem down as every sentence incorporated within it is exactly how I feel for Joanne. She was been the mother that I always wanted and I know that she will continue to fulfil this role. I am now a more courageous, dominant, out going person because of her. Some problems and worries may never go away, but I now know how to control them. I now know that because of her, I will be able to make it on my own.

There are several different aspects of the status and behaviour of women, which unfold as the play unravels. The layers are pealed back as we look at women both through the way they are treated by men, how they treat each other and how they treat men in different circumstances.

Women in this patriarchal society didn’t have a say in their household, they were there to look after the children. They had legal control over neither themselves nor their property. The men were head of the household; demanded respect from their family and decided on whom and when their daughters would marry. The women were supposed to be silent, gentle, passive and submissive but Elizabeth 1st herself projected an ambiguous male-female identity. Independent women were regarded with interest and suspicion. The controversial treatment of gender issues in Much Ado have been central to its impact on Elizabethan audiences familiar with a comprehensive literature on the role of women. Shakespeare saw men and women as equals in a world, which declared them unequal. To talk about Shakespeare’s women is to talk about his men; he refused to separate their worlds physically, intellectually and spiritually. Women in general were not highly educated and were not expected to have clever, witty talk with men. Some women clearly did not fit in this mould because of independent wealth or position.

This patriarchal attitude is seen clearly throughout the play; the male characters continually put the female down. Leonato’s behaviour here orders Hero to prepare to accept whoever courts her. Her duty is to be ruled by her father. As Antonio says ‘Well, niece, I trust you will be ruled by your father’, this is a sign of control over women. Leonato gives orders to Hero in what to do ‘Daughter, remember what I told you. If the Prince do solicit you in that kind, you know your answer’, if he proposes marriage to you, you know what to do. Hero does her best to play the dutiful and obedient daughter, she is shy, deferential and defenceless against Claudio’s denunciation. She is like how women are supposed to be, only speaking when spoken to you. Women are of a lower status than men, they seem to be ordered around, Leonato sends Beatrice away ‘Niece, will you look to those things I told you of?’

With the aristocracy of this age, the fathers arranged marriages; if you were not married you were seen as rejected or as single women protected extremely by their father to preserve virginity, they were not considered any better than a prostitute. Marriage amongst the Elizabethan gentry was traditionally a means of providing heirs to secure the family name and property. A man would look to marry a woman of his own social level, or from a class beneath him if her family was wealthy enough, they would never marry a woman who was seen as ‘better’ than them. Although mutual esteem, affection, companionship could all develop within a marriage, Elizabethans did not necessary believe them to be prerequisites. Of course there should be love, but in the sense of sexual desire.

Beatrice begins by commenting on the sour-faced Don John, (even though women were not aloud to speak their minds; Beatrice does, and talks a lot whilst at it) and then brings Benedick into the conversation. Her ideal man is somewhere between the two of them Don John is too quiet whereas Benedick prattles non-stop. Both Leonato and Antonio warn Beatrice about her sharp tongue.

Beatrice ‘He were an excellent man that were made just in the

midway between him and Benedick. The one is too like

an image and says nothing, and the other too like my

lady’s eldest son, evermore tattling.’

It is obvious that she does not conform to their idea of proper womanly behaviour. Leonato’s warning is good humoured but Antonio is much more bluntly disapproving

Leonato ‘By my troth, niece, thou wilt never get thee a husband,

If thou be so shrewd of thy tongue.’

Antonio ‘In faith, she’s too curst.’

Leonato calls her sharp-witted, although Antonio is rather more blunt, his use of the phrase ‘too curst’ implying that if she carries on with her sharp-tongued attitude she will not be left with a husband.

Beatrice unconventially refuses marriage to a much higher status-Don John, this may make people uncomfortable. Don Pedro compliments Beatrice, he does not like to see her quiet, but lively and loud ‘Your silence most offends me, and to be merry best becomes you; for out o’question, you were born in a merry hour’.

Female criticism and political criticism has become conventional to separate, it seems inappropriate to treat them as distinct categories. In practise both forms of criticism are understandably interlinked, most typically by the notion of patriarchy and misogyny.

Feminism aims to achieve rights and equality for women in social, political and economic life. This challenges sexist beliefs, which result in the degradation and subordination of women.

Much Ado explores the nature of true love. Beatrice and Benedick don’t understand themselves at first, until they are tricked that they are in love.

The Masked Dance allows women to be themselves; it is abnormal for women to say things, make their own decisions or speak down on men, but the mask allows them to. The women with the masks pretend not to know whom they are talking to. A paradox- a usual ‘mask; must be held in normal, social etiquette. The mask allows you to be free, no one can see who anyone else is, there is no status and the behaviour immediately changes.

This mask is almost like a license for women, to step out of convention and take power, unlike normal circumstances, it releases possibilities that don’t exist in normal life.

In conclusion, the play reveals how Shakespeare saw men. In this play he invites us to also look at how the women were equal in reality, even if society declared them not to be. There are exceptions to this and although this is the apparent picture, in such situations it had made it difficult for men to have control of women. It is clear that men would never marry a woman of a higher status because they would have no control.

Society is just a mask of what is going on beneath, it is the behaviour in different circumstances, women are equal to men but are driven to exercise this freedom.

There is an official perception that men have all power, but, in reality women have a lot more power than they are seen on the outside by men. When a man is in love with a women, he would do anything to have her, this is their weakness.

Who Influenced Me the Most

The person who influenced me the most is my Dad. He influences me the most because without him throwing the football with me I wouldn’t get better. We would also run to a track and do a mile so we could get in shape. Then we would do throwing drills so I could get better at catching.

A lot of times My Dad and I, we will go to a park and play basketball. We both like sports so we play them a lot. So everytime I would join a sport we would practice it so I could get better. But everytime we play basketball or football we always have a lot of fun playing them.

Another person who influenced me the most is Jeff Garcia. He’s the quarterback for the 4ers. He influenced me because everytime he throws the football it makes me want to do better. So when im trying to think plays I try my hardest to remember them. So when I go to football practices if I screw up my coach makes me work. Also when I watch football games I have a lot of fun.

So everytime I go and play football I try to remember plays. I also know all the professional football players know and remember all the plays. So im hoping I become good someday. I also hope that if im ever in a game I will not screw up.

Getting What I Deserve

The objective of the of this essay was to make me a better writer, and I certainly have improved. I have learned what makes an essay good or bad. The things that make it easier to write a good essay. As for evaluating myself and how well I did in this course, has proven to be tricky, as well as figuring what I deserve for a grade. I wish I could easily tell you that I am a literary genius and spend paragraph upon paragraph telling you why I deserve a B+ in this course. The truth, however, is that this evaluation has been a challenge for me. It is always hard to evaluate yourself; to balance between what you think you deserve and what you really deserve. For sure, I would like an A- in the course; I think I really deserve a B+. But, do I really deserve that grade? So I ask myself some questions. Have I mastered the basic writing skills, have I improved my grammar, have I participated in class which would warrant me receiving a B+ in the course? I believe the answer is yes.

The important part of gaining basic writing skills is clarity, which is also an important part of my essays. The topics of my essays have been clearly stated and prepared. I have begun all my writings with topic sentences and followed them with support. Without topic sentences, paragraphs do not have structure. Without support, the paragraphs are weak. All of my essays I feel have been well organized, shaped, and creative. Without these my essays would have been difficult to read, and would have lost credibility. I have received all A’s on my essays, top grades are difficult to earn, and that is why I believe that I should have a B+ in this course.

Secondly, my grammar has steadily improved from the beginning of the year. While my test grades have been all over the board, I believe that I have mastered the point of proper grammar. I‘ve been exposed, and re-exposed to a language I haven’t heard in many years. I have used proper grammar skills, hopefully, in all of my papers, and thus believe that I have done a good job, meriting a strong B+

Legal Process Paper

Employment discrimination is a violation that is more common in the workplace than many other types of issues. Because of the seriousness of this type of violation there have been many steps taken to insure that the individuals who are the recipients of this kind of action can seek legal restitution. First, it is important that the guidelines are clear and that employees understand what types of protection the law provides against discrimination. Second, it is important for employees to know how they go about filing charges if there has been a discrimination law violation. There are several laws that govern the guidelines against discrimination in the workplace. The following are some of these

1. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 164 (Title VII), which prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, and national origin.

. The Equal Pay Act of 16 (EPA), protects men and women who do basically the same type of job and work in the same company from sex-based wage discrimination.

. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 167 (ADEA), protects employees who are 40 years of age or older.

4. Title I and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 10 (ADA), prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in the private sector as well as in state and local government offices.

5. Sections 501 and 505 of the Rehabilitation Act of 17, which prohibit discrimination of qualified individuals with disabilities in the federal government.

6. The Civil Rights Act of 11 provides monetary damages in cases of intentional employment discrimination as well as other discrimination issues (http//www.eeoc.gov).

If an individual believes that he or she has been discriminated against on the basis

Race, color, religion, sex, or national origin when applying for a job or in an existing job, they are encouraged to file a discrimination charge with the EEOC. These charges may be filed in person or by mail or by telephone. In order to prevent delays in the process, it is necessary to stay within the guidelines set forth by the agency.

The first thing an individual should do is to make sure the charges are filed with the EEOC within 180 days of the discriminatory action. Some states and locations have anti-discrimination laws and agencies that are there to grant or seek relief. In those cases, the injured individual has 00 days following the discrimination act in which to file. If the state or local agency stops its processing of the charge, the individual has 0 days from that date to file with the EEOC. It is important to file as soon as possible because delaying could prevent any remedy that would, otherwise, have been awarded.

When possible, some individuals choose a process called mediation, when seeking remedy from employment discrimination. The mediation process is fair and is usually successful in helping to resolve employment disputes and reach a reasonable agreement. This type of process helps to reduce tension in the workplace after agreements are made and is less costly to the employer. As an alternative to the litigation process, mediation is a form of Alternative Dispute Resolution that is offered by the EEOC. During this process, the employer and the employee have a chance to discuss the issues and examine any misunderstandings that may exist. It is an informal process and is conducted by a third party who is neutral and whose job it is to help the parties reach an agreeable resolution. He or she does not offer suggestions or impose ideas to the parties, but instead, just helps the parties come to an agreement on a mutually acceptable solution. The process is private and confidential and proceedings are not discussed with anyone.

The first step of the mediation process begins by the EEOC department when they contact the employer and the employee and make sure of their willingness to participate in the process. The agent then will schedule the mediation session and contact a trained mediator who will also attend the session. At this time either parties are free to retain counsel to be present at the session, but it is not required. If the mediation process is not successful, the charge will be investigated in the usual manner.

There are several advantages to using the mediation process

1. It is efficient and is less costly in terms of time as well as money. It offers prompt resolution and is usually concluded within one to five hours.

. The mediation process is a fair one because the mediator has no investment in either of the parties. Their only role is to help the parties reach an agreeable resolution.

. This is a confidential process in which no recording by audio or video is done. Any notes that are taken are discarded promptly upon completion of the session.

4. Settlement of the issue does not mean that the employer has admitted guilt of employment discrimination or violation of any EEOC laws.

5. Mediation processes avoid expensive and time consuming court proceedings.

In conclusion, this is only a small glimpse into the legal processes that are available to

Individuals who feel they have been discriminated against in the workplace. No one should have to endure discrimination in employment and it is important that employees understand the processes they have available to them through the legal system. Mediation is a popular process and is one that provides resolution in a less uncomfortable method. It provides fast resolution with less cost to the employer and in many cases produces a much better work environment for both parties.

Workplace Motivation Paper

“Motivation refers to the individual forces that account for the direction, level, and persistence of a person’s effort expanded at work” Schermerhorn, Jr., Hunt, Osborn, 00, p. 147). Within this definition there are three key words that are easily misinterpreted by managers direction, level, and persistence. Direction refers to an individual’s choice when presented with a number of possible alternatives. Level refers to the amount of effort a person puts forth. Persistence refers to the length of time a person sticks with a given action. Once managers fully understand the meaning of motivation they can begin to apply it in the workplace. But, first managers must determine which category of motivation is best. There are three categories that the theories of motivation fall in reinforcement, content, and process. Reinforcement theories emphasize the linkage between individual behavior and some specific outcomes to show how managers can alter the direction, level, or persistence of individual actions. Content theories profile different needs that may motivate individual behavior. Basically, content theories focus on the physiological or psychological deficiencies that we feel a compulsion to reduce or eliminate. Process theories focus on the thought or cognitive processes that take place within the minds of people and that influence their behavior. After managers have determined the category of motivation theories he or she wishes to implement, he or she can then decided which theory within that category is best.

Of the three categories, the content theories category is the best choice because its primary focus is on individual needs. The theories within this category suggest that the manager’s job is to create a work environment that responds positively to individual needs. Four of the better known content theories are Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory, Clayton Alderfer’s ERG theory, Frederick Herzberg’s two-factor theory, and David McClelland’s acquired needs theory. Without going into a lot of detail, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory offers a pyramid of physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization needs. Alderfer’s ERG theory is based on Maslow’s hierarchy theory except it collapses the five needs categories into three. The three categories of the ERG theory are existence, relatedness, and growth needs. Herzberg’s two-factor theory (also known as the motivator-hygiene theory) identifies job context as the source as the source of job dissatisfaction and job content as the source of job satisfaction. McClelland’s acquired needs theory proposes that an individual’s specific needs are acquired over time and are shaped by one’s life experiences.

A middle-aged woman manages one of the Customer Service departments within Clear View Company. She tends to be a hands-on manager, meaning; she likes having direct contact with each of the four employees in the department. Each of the four employees has high regards for the manager because she takes into account each individual’s needs. By doing this, she is able to apply the appropriate theory of motivation in order to improve each employee’s job performance. The department is comprised of two men and three women, one of who is the manager; all of them work together to achieve the common goal of maintaining the Customer Service processes within Clear View.

It has become priority for the Customer Service department to be more efficient in the issuing Customer Service reports. Essentially, the Customer Serviceor’s Office has to improve on the timeliness of finalizing the Customer Service reports. Thus, the employees within the department job performance must be improved in order to increase the timeliness of issuing these reports. Therefore, the manager of the department is making every attempt possible to motivate the employees with the hope that their job performance will improve. The manager has determined that each employee responds differently to each motivation strategy.

The first of the four employees is a woman in her mid-fifties. She is considered to be a part of society’s middle class. She has been a Clear View Companyemployee for twenty years. She has been diagnosed with cancer and has a lot of outside stresses that may be affecting her job performance. She tends to complain about any type of changes that might affect the department whether good or bad. Her motivation right now is just to make to her retirement date. Her personal motivation is based on Alderfer’s ERG theory because her higher order of needs can no longer be satisfied thus her lower order of needs has been activated so that she can be satisfied.

The second employee is a single male in his early-twenties. He has been employed at Clear View Companyfor two and a half years. He is also motivated by Alderfer’s ERG theory because he relates to the three categories of the theory existence, relatedness, and growth. He relates to these three categories because of his desire for material well-being, for satisfying interpersonal relationships, and for continued personal growth and development. Therefore, he is not resistant to change within the workplace because in the end he will benefit from the growth process.

The third employee is a woman in her early-thirties. She has been employed with Clear View Companyfor ten years. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory motivates her because her physiological, safety, and social needs have to be satisfied before her self-esteem and self-actualization needs are satisfied. Thus, she is somewhat resistant to the need for improvement. This is because the need for improvement is not a priority but she needs the job to satisfy her security (safety) needs therefore, she will make the necessary changes to improve her performance.

The fourth employee is a married man in his late-thirties. He has been employed with Clear View Companyfor over fifteen years in various departments. He was recently demoted from his manager position in another department to a regular position within the Customer Service department. He is motivated by McClelland’s Acquired Needs theory because of his need for achievement, affiliation, and power to move back up the corporate ladder. Therefore, he does not resist any suggestions that would improve his job performance.

Out of the six employees, one of them responds to McClelland’s Acquired Needs theory, two of them respond to Alderfer’s ERG theory, and the other responds to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory. The manager of the department tries to motivate each employee according to the theory that he or she responds too. Thus, she allows for the employees to provide her with feedback and suggestions as to how he or she prefers to be motivated.

Management’s Motivation Philosophy

Even though each of the four employees respond to different theories of motivation they all respond more positively to McClelland’s Acquired Needs theory when utilized by the manager. The manger of the department understands by applying McClelland’s Acquired Needs theory will assist her in achieving the goal of the department.

The three individual needs that have to be identified by the manager are need for achievement, need for affiliation, and need for power. The need for achievement is the desire to do something better or more efficiently, to solve problems, or to master complex tasks. The need for affiliation is the desire to establish and maintain friendly and warm relations with others. The need for power is the desire to control others, to influence their behavior, or to be responsible for others (Schermerhorn, Jr., Hunt, and Osborn, 00, p. 157).

For each of the four employees, the manager of the department identifies that each of them have a need for achievement. This need is easy to identify because all of the employees seek to excel within Clear View. Each employee also has the need for regular feedback in order to monitor his or her own achievements. Most of all, each employee shares the common goal of solving complex tasks that is why they work for Clear View Company where solving complex tasks is an everyday job.

The manager of the Customer Service department also identified that each of the four employees has a need for affiliation. There are only four employees in the Customer Service department including the manager, because this is a small group, each employees has a need for affiliation. They have the need for harmonious relationships with other people. Moreover, they have the need to feel accepted by other people. Each employee feels in order to achieve their common goal they should have warm relationships between them.

Lastly, the manager of the Customer Service department identified that each employee has the need for power. However, each employee’s need for power varies. Some of the employees have a need for personal power to direct others. This need is apparent in the employees who want to move up the corporate ladder. Other employees have a need for institutional power. Institutional power is based on employees wanting to organize the efforts of others to further the goals of the department as a whole.

Conclusion

“The challenge of motivating employees has long been recognized as an integral part of managing” (Williams, 00). Motivation plays an exceedingly important role towards excellence. Therefore, motivating employees to perform to the best of their ability is seen as one of the manager’s primary tasks. Thus, the manager of the Customer Service department has determined in order to achieve the desired result of motivating the employees she will utilize McClelland’s acquired needs theory. By motivating the employees, the manager is able to get the best of each employee’s production ability. Meaning, each of the employee’s productivity level will be conducive of how he or she is motivated.

With McClelland’s Acquired Needs theory, managers have the ability to teach employees how to develop certain needs. The manager of the Customer Service department understands that motivation can give employees a sense of responsibility in carrying out routine tasks. By utilizing McClelland’s Acquired Needs theory, the manager of the Customer Service department is able to improver her employees job performance. McClelland’s Acquired Needs theory proposes that an individual’s specific needs are acquired over time and are shaped by one’s life experiences. This is the reason why this is the best theory of motivation for Clear View Company.

Personal Essay #1

My Blanket

The heat was beaming with steam on this hott summer day, my

father working under the hood of our car, mother making supper, I think it was

macaroni and cheese with hot dogs. My brother and I where playing hide and go

seek with the neighbors kids. As I began counting the last three numbers one to

ten, I hear my mother tell Michael put that back, thats your sisters!

I stop counting and run quickly into the house, Im going straight for

my blankie and as Im trying to get my blankie back by screaming and hitting my

brother; my dad suddenly runs in, snatches Michael right up into his huge arms

and takes my care-bears blanket.

Fed up with the arguing and whining over my blanket, Dad takes it

across the street to the garage, of course Im right behind him begging him not to

throw it away, Dont hurt it Daddy I say, thats my binkie! My father had

quickly taken it and cut it in half, while telling me Im so tired of your whining,

you too old for it, Ill buy you a big kid teddy bear to replace it.

I was devastated, I ran into the house crying for my mommy, I told

her that daddy sniff, sniff cut my binkie in half ! She was so upset that I

swore I saw a tear run down her cheek. Before mom could say anything to dad

he walks in with a smooth stride, holding both pieces of my blanket, Im scared to

death hes mad at me and I wont ever see my precious baby blankie agan. He

suddenly hands one half of my blankie to my mother, and looks at me

encouragingly and says to me you will keep this half and I will keep the other

half to save for when yours goes to rags, so you can grow up and still have half

of your blankie to pass on to your kids .

After that Ive taken better care of my baby blanket and didnt take it

absolutely everywhere I went, that way my brother wouldnt tease me about it,

even though I seldom remembered to leave it home so that wouldnt happen.

Of course at that age we didnt understand what not annoying your brother or

sister meant.

Even though my dad kept that other half of my blankie I never

needed it, So eventually somewhere around the world its lost in a move

somewhere along the road, in a storage unit we stopped paying for. I suppose its

been thrown away or restored and with someoone else. I can never be positive

about that, but I do know that; even though I only have half of my white care-

bears blanket, thats almost see-through, I can still cherish it like its the whole

thing.

Because its so dear to me, I will eventually put it up, and make my

grand-daughter her very own Binkie that she can bug her parents with. Some

day, a long long time from now, thats what Ill do.But for now, I shall sleep with

my old raggedy Binkie until its hardly a square piece of cloth. Until then I will

always have my special security out side of my special pillow.
