In today’s society it is important to receive a college education to join the workforce. However, the transition from high school to college was a very intimidating experience for me. To make the college transition less frightening, I took several precautions while still in high school. These precautions included participating in extracurricular activities, taking challenging courses, as well as developing good time management skills. Challenging courses also benefited me because it helps to prepare me academically for the demanding workload found in college. Taking challenging courses while still in high school helps us prepare for the demanding workload that we will find in college. Most high school senior students believe that it is their right to take a minimal amount of courses because it is their last year in high school. This kind of thinking can however, frustrate us in the future because we will be overwhelmed by all the work assigned to us in college. College professors expect entering students to have a solid education especially in English and mathematics, and will expect a great amount of effort from us. In college, we do not have the option of complaining about having too much work, therefore getting ready as soon as possible is probably the best thing we can all do. Dynamic characters are an essential part of any writer’s library. The author’s create personalities that keep readers captivated. Also, the author’s make us analyze what his purpose is of having dynamic characters in their work. Do they do this to give their work authencity or to give their play suspense and humor? Only the author knows the true answer. What I know is that dynamic characters are very important for plays. It makes the readers more interested in the story behind the play. Also, it makes us understand the attitude of the character at the beginning and end of the play. We can experience this in the plays “ The Rising of the Moon” by Lady Gregory and “ A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry. These are plays that use dynamic characters as main characters who make us laugh, cry, understand and sympathize with them as they go through their change from protagonist to antagonist or viceversa.

The play that shows the main character’s change from stubborn to considerate was “ The Rising of the Moon”. In this play, the Sergeant ( protagonist ) is serious and determined. He believes in law and order and has a unique way of percepting things. From this description we can say that “ he is a large man with a peasant’s sturdiness, similar to a large dray horse”. He becomes the most interesting character in the play because we see that he needs to analize the situation as to whether he would let the criminal make his escape. But we see that as thye two men start to know each other, the

Fugitive revives the Sergeant’s patriotic feelings, letting the criminal escape.

The Sergeant lets him go because he realizes that he could have been in the criminal’s situation. There is a passage in the play that reveals the Sergeant’s realization when he says “ ...If it wasn’t for the sense I have, and for my wife and family, and for me joining the force the time I did, it might be myself how would be after breaking gaol and hiding in the dark...” (1170). In this part of the play we realize that the Sergeant has had a change of heart and we as readers start to suspect that the Sergeant is going to let the criminal go. The Sergeant is a dynamic character because he evolves from a strict, dominant, ambitious man to a more open minded and considerate man for some readers. To others he changes into a bad, unthoughtful man due to the fact that some readers disaprove with the autor because they think that indirectly she is helping the idea that criminals should be let free under certain circumstances. Overall, the autor wants us to focus more on the message of the story because it shows us that even the person with a lot of values can be flexible with humanity.

The autor of the play “ A Raisin in the Sun” uses a very unique technique to focus on the characters. In comparison to the play “ The Rising of the Moon” they both present characters that go throught experiences with the enemy and we see how at the end of the play they have matured and grown into different men. In fact, in the play “ A Raisin in the Sun” we see a very dynamic yet ignorant character named Walter Lee Younger. This African-American, 0 year old man has a mentality of a child. He wants a better life for

his family by using the insurance money that his mother has received for his father’s death. At first, his mother refuses, but since she wants to trust her son she gives him the money. Walter, being at the time an immature and stubborn man, invested all the money that was given to him into a liquor store that eventually went into his friend Willy’s pocket. At first, us as readers get mad and frustrated at him, but then we realize that this had to happen because this event is what changes Walter from a boy to a man. We see that he has finally become a man when he, for a second time, refuses the money from the white people by saying “...Well- what I mean is that we come from people who had a lot of pride. I mean- we are very proud people. And that’s my sister over there and she’s going to be a doctor- and we are very proud-...And we have decided to move into our house because my father- my father- he earned it for us brick by brick...We don’t want your money.” (160). Walter evolves from a very ignorant, childish man into a very strong, independent man.

The Sergeant from “ The Rising of the Moon” and Walter Lee from the play “ A

Raisin in the Sun” are very different yet similar characters. They both confront individuals from the other side of the road and by the end of the play they become different individuals and develop different thoughts. The Sergeant becomes a man that is very considerate and thinks about the way he would have been without his family, he belives in the righteneous of other people and has faith that the fugitive , being free, will do something positive with his life. Walter becomes a mature, family man that would do anything for the happiness of his family. So here we can tell that they both are very similar. They both have families that they love and they both try to do what’s right. They

4

both have jobs that are to serve others, the Sergeant as a police officer and Walter as a chauffeur. They both are around the same age. Most importantly, they both know the importance of understanding what they as right and wrong and of doing what you believe in and this is what these two dynamic characters contribute to these plays.

More than a million immigrants come to the United States in the past few years. All immigrants are forced by the economic situation in their own country to leave. Forced to leave behind their love ones and help provide for them. In the following argument I will argue and try to explain that illegal immigrants are not harming America. How myths that immigrants come and take American jobs are not true. Also that they are not an economic burden.

Preserving America is where many have drawn the line behind which they stand. Americans who are fearful and angry, with unintended irony call themselves natives. As I see it the only people who were actual natives in America would be the Native Americans (Indians). America is an immigrant nation a nation of strangers. The United States after the English Settlers came became a world of immigration. People who where looking to start a new and better life. Now in present days anyone who does that is labeled as an illegal alien who comes only to milk the American system. Which is of course not true. Immigrants do not come here because they want to but because they have to. The need to survive and give a better life to their families is the only reason they are here. It is said that illegal immigrants take jobs away from American citizens. It is also said that they place a drain on the educational system and medical resources. Especially here in California where thousands of Mexicans cross the U.S., Mexican borders every year. Immigrants do not take jobs from American citizens. They are here to work the jobs that the

American citizen does not want. Jobs that are poorly paid, degrading and may I add backbreaking. Jobs that no American citizen with endless opportunities would ever take. I have seen first hand how hard these people work up to twelve hour shifts with two ten minute breaks and a half an hour lunch. And only to be paid a merely minimum wage. Not only do they work during the week but also on Saturdays and Sundays when those days should be spent with family. Many undocumented workers work under these conditions and they can not fight back because they need that job. Their families back home depend on that minimum to survive and live a better life. So it is no true that immigrants come over to put a drain in the system. Only Medicaid and limited food benefits are available to illegal immigrants and most do not even apply for these because they fear deportation by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. According to Urban Institute a nonpartisan research organization the local, state and federal Government spends about eleven point eight billion a year educating legal and illegal immigrant children. That’s about two hundred-sixteen billion less spent to educate all children. Illegal and legal immigrants pay more in taxes each year than they get in benefits.

With all of this we want them to leave the U.S. California for example is one of the states that has a big number of immigration per year. The state passed an anti-immigrant measure proposition that would supposedly save our state by denying public education, non-emergency health care and welfare to illegal immigrants. So you see illegals can not be draining the system because it is made so they can not benefit from them. Illegals are hard workers who use few government services. I believe that illegal immigration is given such a big importance because it is what gets politicians elected. Like proposition 187 the proposition that was supposed to help the state from such and economic burden by denying assistance was a promise made to get votes because before 187 illegal aliens were not even allowed government aid the immigration issue is exaggerated by tem. Television and magazines are also responsible for it as well. They draw so much attention to the issue and exaggerate its number that it is the reason immigration has become a national concern.

“Eight of 11 new comers to the United States each year enter legally. Those residing in the States illegally represent 1.5 percent of the population. In California where the debate is especially heated the undocumented immigrants comprise 4 percent of the state population”(Sharry84). I have met people who have just emigrated from their country to the United States. I have asked them what was the reason that they came to the United States in the first place. They answered that the economical situation at home forced them to find a better job and since the U.S. is a nation of opportunities they have come to be able to provide for their families. Of course not all immigrants come here to seek a job. Some come here seeking political protection. In their cases they are forced to leave because their lives are in danger. Another reason why Immigration is on the spotlight is because of race issues. America is so afraid to lose its identity that it will do what it has takes to try and regain it. People of America are afraid that the U.S. is being over runned by immigrants and that is not true. The Urban Institute says that 50,000 to 00,000 immigrants are coming in and staying each year. That is a small percentage if looked as the total population of the U.S. “Illegal immigrants are not here for a handout they come here and work hard”(Sharry87). Many of the immigrants that come to the U.S. are over 16 years of age. “ 86 percent of Mexican men are in the labor force, compared with only 75 percent of non- Hispanic whites”(Sharry87).

Maria and Pedro Vargas are two immigrants who came from Mexico two years ago. Maria works in a factory that packs and glues together books. Pedro works in a meat factory. They also have two children who were not born in the United States. Maria and Pedro sometimes have to pull longer shifts than the normal 8-hour shifts in these factories. Their children go to school but are out way before their parents are home. The Vargas pay an enormous rent for their one bedroom apartment. The rent is so high because landlords know they will not complain. Being illegal aliens the Vargas do not qualify for any of the money assisting programs that the government offers. Even though Maria and Pedro pay State and Federal taxes from their pay checks they have no health insurance or government help that they can qualify for. So it is unfair that we say that illegal immigrants are an economic burden. It is true that their children get and qualify for educational and meal programs but it is only a small percentage because most of the immigrants who come to the united Stated are adults.

The adults who do come and have children here I believe that their children are entitled to these programs because they are citizens.

Another part of this issue is the illegal immigrants that do get health care are abusing it. That is not true because they are actually being excluded from them. Many immigrants are not aware of the programs that there is and most do not even apply for them because they fear deportation. “Latinos represent . million of California’s approximately 6.4 million uninsured, it can be assumed that the number of undocumented workers who are denied access to health care in this country is much greater”(Velasco10).

It is not fair that these workers can not get insurance because most of them work in the agricultural businesses and are exposed to a lot of different types of pesticides. They face greater health risks than anyone else. Like I said before no American with their opportunities would ever come and work on these fields. I believe that America is built on the back of these undocumented workers and yet we accuse them of coming and taking our jobs and calling them an economic burden. I think it is a small price to pay for their hard intensive work. Illegal aliens are employed chiefly in low wage markets. The job searches of especially Mexican illegals benefit from their reputation as hard, reliable workers. Their reputation is known in a wide variety of low and middle wage employers.

Even though with all this people show sympathy for illegal immigrants, but they still impose that they learn English, get documented and work. “ Only 0 percent say immigrants take jobs away from citizens and 6 percent say the do work that citizens don’t necessarily want and that needs to be done”(Rayner7). States receive the taxes paid by immigrants from the federal government. “It is estimated that about two-thirds of the fax dollar paid by immigrants legal and undocumented go to the federal treasury, while most of the health, education and social service costs that are incurred are paid for by state and local governments”(Rayner8).

Foil characters can be described as characters that contrast with one another. In the play “The Crucible,” by Arthur Miller, John Proctor and Reverend Hale are two foil characters that can surprisingly be compared and easily contrasted by thier good and bad aspects. In the play John Proctor was a proud farmer that was respected and also feared by people. Reverend Hales was man of honor and a witch hunter in Salem, Massachusetts. Both characters can be both similar in ways, but totally different in other views.

John Proctor played the role of the hero in the play. He was an honest man who just wanted the people to see the truth which was that there was never any witchcraft in the town of Salem and to stop the useless death that were accruing. Through his attempt to bring out justice to the town, Proctor came across two challenges that really showed his character in the play. He overcomes the first by his decision to testify against Abigail, despite his guilt and knowing the risks that came with the truth. His second conflict was whether to sign a false confession and save his life. His decision to choose self-sacrifice and not go through with lying to his friends and neighbors, shows both that he is the hero of the play and his morals in the type of person he was. As well as Proctor having good morals, Reverend Hale also had some good aspects in the play.

Reverend Hale was also a good man in some ways. He was witch hunter that just wanted to save the people of Salem from witchcraft. Later in the play he comes to his senses and tries to save more people that were being accused of witchcraft, like Proctor was at the end of the story. After he becomes aware of Abigails, Parris, and Hathornes hidden agendas, he begins to question the validity of the trials, in which he acts as a judge. He quiets the court for the truth and because he didn’t want to be part of the many lies that send people to their deaths. This was what really showed that in so ways he really did have good morals. Even though both Proctor and Hale have good aspects they are also known to have bad aspects in the play.

From the beginning of the play, Proctor and Hale showed their bad aspects. The play starts with Proctor just ending his affair with Abigail wounding his loyalty with his wife, Elizabeth. This event in the play was what scarded Proctor’s character through out the whole play. Hale was sent by Reverend Parris in the beginning of the play to investigate witchcraft with some girls that were dancing in the forest. After witnessing the strange occurrence that was happening to some of the girls, he was blinded by the lies of witchcraft and became a follower of those who accused the town’s people of it. For example, he knew that Rebecca was some how innocent and still arrested her to really just save his own life in a way. Reverent Hale did change his ways, but also says that it is ok to lie to save your life. This shows Hale’s character is selfish and that he would do anything to save his life even if it is wrong.

Both John Proctor and Reverend Hale are foil characters that can be compared to find the motives of each other. What really made the easily compared were their good and bad aspects through out the play. From Proctor becoming the hero in the play, to Hale changing his ideas of witchcraft can show the difference between the two. Both characters are needed to reflect on each other, making them characters with great importance in the play.

INTRO

Girl With a Pearl Earring does demonstrate the limitations of poverty on a person’s life, however it also demonstrates that money is not the only factor that can limit their choices. Girl With a Pearl Earring also establishes that the wealthy may also have some limitations in life. While Griet is limited by her family’s lack of money, her role as a woman in society, her low socials status as a maid and her own expectations, our wealthy protagonist Vermeer also has limited choice about his art making, his need to support such a large family and his debts.

Griet is limited by her family’s lack of money

livepaperhelp.com

Griet is a young woman confined by her family loyalty, her low social status and family’s new descent into poverty. As her father has just lost his job, the family now lacks the income to put food on the table. This new level of poverty for Griet’s family forces her to have to take a job as a maid to the Vermeer’s because “we need the money”. There is no other option for Griet’s family and they must rely on Griet to get this job to provide enough food for their survival “we have no choice”.

Griet is limited by her role as a woman in society

Being a woman in 17th Century Delft was another factors that were limiting Griet’s options. Unlike her brother Frans who was able to learn to become a skilled trades person, Griet’s only option to provide for her family was to become a maid.

Her unrealistic love of Vermeer was also tainted by her role as a woman in the society at that time. As a woman she would have only destroyed herself, and further limited her options by becoming intimate with Vermeer. The market gossip threatens to destroy any young woman, as seen through the story of the maid in the red dress.

Griet is limited by her low socials status as a maid

Its true that Griet is forced to become a maid because of her families lack of income and once in the Vermeer’s household has little to no power, due to her status as maid.

Griet’s limited power as a maid at the Vermeer’s house would seemingly limit all her options in life, as she fears she may never get out of her role as a maid.

Griet is limited by her own expectations

Griet places unrealistic expectation upon herself, by assuming that she can stay unattached and unmarried to Pieter.

Griet is also limited by her expectation that Vermeer would be able to have a relationship with her. She limits herself and ultimately threatens her relationship with Pieter by holding on to the hope that Vermeer feels that same passion she feels.

Vermeer limited by about his art making

Vermeer’s passion for his art making is limited by the expectations of his family. Both Maria Thins and Catharina demand that he paint faster to provide for their family. Vermeer limited by his need to support such a large family

Vermeer limited by his debts

Vermeer is indebted to Van Ruvjen and has no option but to paint Griet and ultimately ruin her life. He is indebted to the baker and must paint his daughter.

Catharina Limited in her inability to see what both Vermeer and Griet can see in the art world

While Griet has a natural understand and deep artistic perception, Catharina cannot see these things. She displays little interest in the wheel colour of vegetables, when they first meet Griet. Catharina cannot understand why Griet would need to ask if she was allowed to clean the glass. Catharina is kept out of Vermeer entire love because a part of her can understand his art world.

Why Hamlet delays

Hamlet is an emotional person. He feels guilt, remorse and has responsibilities, yet at the same time he feels pride and a sense of duty. He is also quick, in Act one, scene five to take on his role of avenger

“Haste me to know’t, that I, with wings as swift

as meditation or the thoughts of love, May sweep to my revenge.” I believe that there are many factors that contribute to hamlets delay in action.

livepaperhelp.com

Hamlet is passionate about his role and swears to “wipe away all trivial fond records” and to concentrate avenging his father’s death. However he is concerned with his mother’s betrayal “O most pernicious woman!” and this makes him hesitate.

This was not the main issue his father spoke of, yet Hamlet is troubled by the thought of his mother’s marriage to his uncle. Hamlet idolized his father so much that he would do anything to make him happy, to be the perfect son. However towards the end of the scene he starts to have some doubts, “The time is out of joint. O cursed spite, that ever I was born to set it right!” Although he feels it’s his duty, he says ‘cursed spite’ I think he is resentful of his evident fate and feels put upon to be made to do this terrible deed.

Hamlet tries to convince everyone that he is mad rather than plotting revenge. Although at first Hamlet feels the idea of acting mad is a good one, it becomes obvious that even Hamlet doubts his genuine sanity. In some parts of the play it is hard to tell if he is acting mad or he is really mad particularly in act scenes 4 when Hamlet argues with his mother. He was already accusing her of treachery and when talking to his mother he is threatening, Gertrude becomes scared ‘though wilt not murder me? Help, ho!’

When Hamlet murders Polonius he still seems to be troubled with his mother’s betrayal.

“A bloody deed-almost as bad, good mother, as kill a king and marry with his brother.”

There is a continuous theme of deceit within the play and Hamlet feels strongly about the deceit by his mother. His idolization of his mother being completely shattered may have thrown Hamlet into depression. Also

the death of his father and the sudden marriage is enough to make anyone depressed, so for Hamlet, who is a very philosophical and deep character these events may have tipped him into mad behavior.

Hamlet is battling with his conscious, he has become more aware of his sense of morality towards the end of the play. Hamlet lives in a society where it is thought wrong to kill, even for revenge, law forbids it, but he also lives in a society where duty and personal honor prevail. Hamlet tries to stir up his hatred for his uncle by speaking in harsh language, calling him a ‘bloody, bawdy Villain’ and a ‘remorseless, treacherous, lecherous, kindles villain.’ But this tactic does not work and he continues to dwell.

Hamlet’s ‘play within a play’ again shows some hesitation, there is no physical action-taking place on Hamlets part, however Hamlet is searching for some sort of truth in what he has been asked to do. In seeing Claudius’s reaction to the play that Hamlet has prepared Hamlet has some hard evidence. The ghost of his father, an apparition, has only told Hamlet of the murder. Hamlet wanted to concrete some evidence.

Despite all this, when the play is performed and Claudius’s reacts strongly, hamlet still does not kill Claudius. This is another opportunity Hamlet passes on.

Hamlet has another ideal situation where he can kill Claudius when Claudius is praying in the church, however, Hamlet is quick and realizes that if he were to die now, he would go straight to heaven as he has been purged of all sins. “A villain kills my father, and for that

I, his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven.”

He wants Claudius to suffer the same fate as his father did; he realizes that with the forgiveness Claudius has asked for he will end up in heaven.

Although Hamlet does finally kill Claudius it is the death of his mother that is the key to the murder of Claudius. Hamlet is so enraged and passionate about the death of his mother. The death of his mother leaves Hamlet with nothing left to live for and there is no longer any reason to hesitate as he has nothing left to loose.

In conclusion I think hamlets lack of resolve comes from his personality, he was too uncertain of anything including his own feelings to commit himself to action, he had too many conflicting ideas in his head including knowing that killing is wrong, revenging his fathers death, if there was any truth from what the ghost said, whether he really was mad and his mothers hasty wedding to his uncle. This is enough to put doubts in anybody’s mind.

Under Jacks rule, the boys become uncivilized savages. They have no discipline. Ralph, however, keeps the boys under order through the meetings, which he himself calls. At these meetings a sense of order is instilled because the boys have to wait until they hold the conch to speak. When Ralph says, Ill give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when hes speaking. (Golding 6) by making such rules as these, and by giving the boys the stability of an authority figure, mainly himself, he enforces his role of leader. He wins the boys respect and confidence in his leadership abilities. Ralph uses his authority to try to improve the boys society. By building shelters he demonstrates his knowledge of the boys needs. When he says to Jack, They talk and scream. The littluns. Even some of the others. (Golding 56) he is referring to why the boys need shelters; they are afraid. Jack fails to realize the boys need security, stability and order in their society. Ralph understands that by building the shelters, the boys will feel more secure. This illustrates his superior knowledge of people, which makes him a better leader than Jack.

Ralphs treatment of the boys demonstrates his understanding of how people should be treated. While Jack considers the boys inferior to himself, Ralph treats the boys as equals. Ralphs superior leadership qualities are reflected in his constant defence of Piggy. Piggy is the weakest of the group and is therefore treated unfairly much of the time. When Jack hits Piggy and breaks his glasses, Ralph calls it A dirty trick. (Golding 78) Ralphs compassion and ability to empathize with others thus illustrating his understanding of people; while at the same time demonstrates Jacks disregard for other humans. Ralphs government is a form of democracy which gives each boy equal rights and an ability to express themselves. Jack treats the boys, especially Piggy, as inferiors. When Jack gets meat from hunting, he gives everyone some except for Piggy. When Piggy asks for some, Jack says, You didnt hunt. (Golding 80) Ralph and many of the littluns did not hunt, yet only this treatment is directed at Piggy. Jacks contempt for Piggy shows his inability to understand people, while a good leader would take care of all of his followers. Ralph possesses this understanding and is therefore a better leader.

Ralphs common sense and ability to recognize what is best for the group as a whole further demonstrates his superior leadership skills. His main focus throughout the book is getting rescued and he puts much emphasis on this. He instructs the boys to make a fire and to keep it burning as a distress signal. When the boys do not share his enthusiasm for getting rescued, he becomes exasperated. The fire is the most important thing on the island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we dont keep the fire going? (Golding 88) Ralphs determination to get rescued is not for purely selfish reasons, but rather, it is in the best interest of the group. When the boys join Jacks tribe; Jack only satisfies their short term wants and needs, such as the desire for meat. A good leader however, should look to the future and plan accordingly such as Ralph does. Although these choices may not always be popular, the better leader will carry out long term plans. When Piggy says Which is better - to be a pack of painted niggers like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is? (Golding 1) he demonstrates how the boys; by not following Ralph, have been lead astray by Jack. Ralphs main priority, is getting off the island, a much wiser choice for the boys to follow. Unfortunately, the boys decide to follow Jack, whose main priority is to hunt and play games rather than try to be saved. Had they listened to the better leader, the novel may not have ended as tragically.

Ralphs clear understanding of people and their needs make him a far superior leader when compared with Jack. Ralphs understanding of the boys need for stability and order through government and rules prompts him to improve the society in which they are living. Jacks society was barbaric and savage and met none of these needs. Jack treats the boys as slaves and inferiors. Ralphs patience and caring with the boys shows his ability to take charge and rule in an effective, yet democratic fashion. Ralphs priority to get off the island demonstrates his wisdom and ability to make decisions. Although a good leader may not be as charismatic as a poor one, it is important to choose the leader who will meet the needs of the people. The popularity of an inferior leader soon disappears, yet the wisdom and guidance of a good leader will always remain.

Character Analysis Essay

Every person has his or her own definition of what a hero is. The qualities that their hero possesses come from personal experiences. In modern times, a hero is defined as a selfless person who risks their life and/or liberty for the benefit of others. In an analysis of Gilgamesh and Beowulf using modern standards, Gilgamesh is not a hero, whereas Beowulf possesses many heroic qualities. Using the “Anglo-Saxon Ideal”, both possess the qualities the Anglo-Saxons valued. Looking at the two epics, Gilgamesh and Beowulf, we see similarities and differences between the two heroes; Gilgamesh is the prototype for the archetypal hero, but by modern standards, he is no hero at all.

Although Beowulf and Gilgamesh have different agendas when they defeated their “monsters”, they both have similar character traits. Beowulf fights and kills Grendel and the dragon for the safety of his people. He is strong, brave, loyal, courageous, generous, and he values friendship. Although Beowulf attacks the dragon, he did not go into the battle unprovoked. On the other hand, Gilgamesh goes after Humbaba to prove his bravery and strength to his people, show that Humbaba is not as strong as everyone believes, show his people that the boundaries set by the Gods are breakable, and to inspire the youth to become braver and stronger. Gilgamesh, like Beowulf, possesses the qualities of bravery, strength, and courage. However, unlike Beowulf, Gilgamesh’s primary motive to go after Humbaba unprovoked was a selfish one.

The “Anglo-Saxon Ideal” emphasizes courage over long life, strength over intelligence, loyalty to the lord and king above all, feasting, music, and storytelling. According to these standards, Gilgamesh is the archetypal hero. Gilgamesh is strong, brave, and courageous. In the 1400 years between the time Gilgamesh first appeared and Beowulf’s first appearance, the template for the hero did not change very much. The people had the same set of values, and they praised the same kind of heroic qualities. Gilgamesh is considered the prototypic archetypal hero. Many subsequent heroes, such as Beowulf, had many of the same qualities.

The roots of English literature can be found in the late part of the first millennium in the year of the Lord. The protagonists of these first literary developments were generally kings. Over the coarse of several progressive centuries a diversely broader group of protagonists has been taken on. This group possesses more distinctive qualities than its predecessors. English literature’s main character has grown immensely since the beginning of its revolution and, it continues to thrive at the present day.

The epic Beowulf marks the origin of the evolution process. The protagonist in this story is Beowulf, the nephew of Higlac, king of the Geats. Beowulf is a great warrior with virtually no weakness when he is young. It seems that nothing can stand in his way. He slays horrific beasts with little effort and even battles underwater for hours at a time. He is equivalent to the contemporary comic-book superhero. As time passes, he inevitably grows old, and a dragon takes his life.

Literary works that follow Beowulf contain main characters with more advanced personalities and weaknesses while simultaneously and gradually lowering their social class. The short story “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” and The Prologue to The Canterbury Tales, which were written in the Medieval Period, are magnificent examples of this improvement to the English protagonist. “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”, encompasses a knight with a slight inferiority complex, and a fear of death. These qualities contribute to a more advanced plotline than Beowulf. Sir Gawain can face a wider variety of adversity than Beowulf does because of his limiting humanistic attributes. Attributes, such as those, are depicted in The Prologue to The Canterbury Tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer. The Prologue focuses on twenty-nine different characters of varying social class who each tell two stories on a pilgrimage they take to Canterbury. Chaucer describes these characters’ physical features, their attire and occupation, and their various eccentricities. He places great emphasis on their flaws.

After Chaucer, the English literary protagonist progresses in a notably similar fashion as “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” and The Prologue to The Canterbury Tales did. That is, lower social classes and more advanced personalities are given to main characters. Other aspects follow. After males dominate the protagonist role for centuries, the opposite sex is taken into consideration by later authors. In 11, George Bernard Shaw features a female as the main character in his play Pygmalion. Eliza Doolittle, a poor flower girl with a detestable English dialect, is this central character. She desires to take speech lessons from a phonetics professor in the play. Her character shows a steadily increasing maturity throughout the play. The ability to mature and grow has developed greatly throughout the coarse of the English protagonist’s evolution. A character such as Eliza would never have been conceptualized in the time of Beowulf.

A character such as Winston Smith would not have been thought of in that time either. George Orwell conceives this character in his novel 184. Smith is a member of the lower social class in 184 called the Outer Party. He also possesses a rebellious and unethical personality. His unorthodox qualities allow him to indulge himself in behavior that is strictly forbidden by the current standing communist government, and they allow him to completely despise the Party’s world of false information. As a result, he joins the Brotherhood, an underground terrorist group, to help overthrow the Party.

The character Winston Smith has a very different and more advanced persona than Beowulf does. The basic evolution of the English protagonist starts with the stereotypical super-hero and moves to the unethical and rebellious anomaly. This anomaly has underlying motives and weaknesses. These characteristics were acquired gradually over the entire evolution of the English protagonist. Other aspects that were developed over that evolutionary time period are, and will remain to be, personality, variety in social class, and gender. There is still much more room for the English protagonist to grow. It does not show any signs of yielding to its current progressive motion.

It is well known that when families, educators, and communities all work together, schools get better and students get the high quality education they need to lead productive lives. Parents are the essential link in improving American education but job and family demands leave little free time for many of them. Sending a report card home is not enough. Parents want to help their children succeed in school, and often need guidance on how to be most effective. Thus parents look to schools for help even if they do not or cannot make the first contact themselves. Making parents feel welcome in the school is the first step to helping them. That’s why as a forth grade Language Arts teacher, it is very important that I create an environment that fosters involving parents and guardians in student learning process. . One strategy I use to accomplish this educational goal is Parent-Teacher Conferences. The beginning of the school year is a key time to communicate with parents. All will want to know what to expect from schools and new teachers, and how they can help their children learn. Some of this information can easily be mailed to parents as a welcome letter with information about a list of basic subjects and broad plans for the year, a list of materials the child will need for class, a phone number and time when the teacher can be reached, monthly or annual calendars highlight upcoming school events and meetings. Next I will send a sincere invitation to first parent-teacher conference. In order to reach and develop a relationship with parents I create a comfortable and private physical environment with enough adult-sized chairs and no desk separating teacher from parent to generate a climate that invites collaboration with parents. Furthermore, I provide parents with opportunities to speak about their children and involve them in creating solutions to problems. At the end of the conference I classify concrete suggestions for how the parents and the teacher will together help the child, emphasize the parents role in the education of the child, and ways to assist them. Moreover, I present resources and materials such as booklets that families can use at home to build student skills.

. Parent-Teacher Conferences for all families are an essential building block of home-school communication where parents provide important perspectives and information that can be extremely valuable. Together, teachers and parents make a great team to help children get a good start for life.

. Another strategy I would use to achieve this educational goal is Ongoing Communications.

Imagine the impact when parents receive positive phone calls letting them know how much progress their children have made in recent weeks or asking if they need any information about school programs and expectations. Home-school communication is greatly increased through personal contacts such as this between teachers and parents .In addition, newsletters can provide a steady stream of information from the school to the home. To attract the attention of parents, my newsletters would be attractive, well-organized, and easily read with encouraging parents to write letter to this newsletter. Also, I will send home notices about special programs parents may want to watch with their children and suggestions for discussing issues that the program will highlight as well as recommended reading lists or suggestions about how to use household materials, such as newspapers and magazines, to encourage reading.

Ongoing Communications is very effective because it can be easily reenacted through the school year, hold ongoing training for groups of parents who want or need intensive help with home learning, builds partnerships with parents to jointly support home learning activities. Taking the time to read with children is the most successful way to encourage kids to read and is critical to a childs education.

Again, involving parents and guardians in student learning process is an important goal because it promotes clear two-way communication between the school and the family to the school programs and has a direct impact on student’s attitudes, behavior and academic progress. Parent-Teacher Conferences and Ongoing Communications are two strategies that ensure quality learning opportunities to all students in my forth grade Language Arts class.

On first observation of the subject in question, Willy walked into my room a nervous, tired old man who had clearly entered the first stages of clinical depression and was near breaking point, mentally and physically. His weary limbs crashed onto my chair as if he had not rested in days.

He said that he had been working hard for the good of his family and said he was the one who people came to if they needed something in New England. His appearance told a different story though and it was quite clear that his optimism was merely a mask for a hidden agenda that he clearly did not want to reveal to me.

With further examination, I have come to realise Willy Loman is like an oyster; full of interesting issues waiting to be discussed, but always clams up when asked about more sensitive topics, such as his family and his overall status. From his notes, I am told he has two sons in their early thirties and a wife, Linda.

The eldest son Biff, is currently a farm labourer of sorts and was allegedly looked down upon by his father because of this job he undertook. When I confronted Willy about this, he seemed cold and spiteful about Biff at first, but when we tried to move onto the next subject, he immediately contradicted himself from what he said a few seconds ago and praised Biff for being a hard worker and not being lazy. This may depict a man, unsure of his own judgement and possibly someone who was willing to change his own opinion for the benefit of others.

William Jefferson Clinton was born in 146 as William Blythe III, the son of a salesman who died before his son was born, and Virginia Dell, a professional nurse who became the single greatest influence in her sons life. Bill Clintons mother, Virginia Cassidy Blythe, moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, to study nursing. Bill Clinton stayed with his mothers parents in Hope, Arkansas. There his grandparents, Eldrigde and Edith Cassidy, taught him strong values and beliefs such as equality among all and discrimination to none. This was a lesson Bill will soon pursue. His mother returned from New Orleans with a nursing degree in 150, when her son was four years old. From an early age, his instincts drew him to politics. Civil rights was the defining political issue of my childhood, Bill said, starting when I was quite young, in the 150s. The other thing was the fact that we got a television when I was nine years old, and I got to watch, in 156, the Republican and Democratic Conventions. I watched the whole thing, and I was utterly fascinated by it.

In 16, he took the last name of his stepfather, Roger Clinton, an alcoholic whose rough behavior brought out in Clinton new powers of resilience and empathy. That same year he was chosen to be part of Boys Nation, a group of young people from around the country sent to experience Washington, D.C., firsthand. There, he got to shake hands with his political hero, John F. Kennedy. The encounter changed Bill Clintons life forever. I was elated, said Clinton. When I went home I had the feeling that if I worked hard and prepared myself, I could have an impact.

The following year, Clinton entered Georgetown University, where he became known for his self-confidence, for his intelligence, and for being a man in a hurry. Twice elected class president, after his junior year he was hired as a part-time clerk on Capitol Hill by Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright. And following Fulbrights example, in his senior year he won a Rhodes Scholarship. At Oxford, he studied international politics, narrowly avoided the draft, opposed the Vietnam War, and dreamt of one day entering public service.

There is a sense of mission that most of us who grew up in the sixties feel as citizens, Clinton said. That it is not enough for us just to pursue our own private lives; that we have a larger obligation to our community and to our country.

livepaperhelp.com

After his return from Oxford University in England, in 170, Clintons career advanced rapidly. At Yale Law School, he met fellow student Hillary Rodham, an active idealist whose no-nonsense working style was the perfect complement to his freewheeling charm. Most everything weve done has been a partnership, Clinton later said of his wife. She is profoundly important to what Ive done.

In 17, Clinton accepted a position on the faculty of the University of Arkansas Law School and used it as a springboard into Arkansas politics. I ran for Congress in 174 and was defeated, Clinton recalled. And then in 176 I was attorney general, and I loved that job. Then a vacancy occurred in the governors race, and so I ran and I won, and it was exhilarating.

Elected governor of Arkansas in 178, thirty-two-year-old Bill Clinton bristled with ideas and energy. However, he also made a series of political miscalculations. By seeming not to listen to his constituents, by raising licensing fees, and by giving an impression of intellectual arrogance, he lost his bid for reelection in 180. I think [the loss] was good for me, Clinton later said. Its like every other adversity in life. If you survive it, you normally come out ahead. I was very fortunate to be from a small, rural state with a lot of small towns, where people were very forthright. Because a few months after the election, I went out across the state and Id ask what Id done wrong. And they would tell me-in great, stunning, brutal detail. They then gave me a second chance to serve.

Mr. Clinton’s way with people, combined with a formidable, organized intelligence, has won himself a lifetime of prizes delegate to Boys State and Boys Nation, winner of the Hot Springs Elks Youth Leadership Award, Rhodes Scholar, Attorney General of Arkansas, youngest Governor in the nation, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council.

The face of Bill Clinton does not seem the sort to excite adulation. He is reasonably handsome, with bright blue eyes, a strong chin and a slightly pouting lower lip that lends him sensuality. His voice, a lightly graveled baritone, glides over the words with easy modulation. His big hands work in varied counterpoise, the right forefinger stabbing his points home, the palms cupping, the fists clenching. His smile runs a dizzying extent, from open-jawed wonder to lip-biting coyness. His eyes work with the smile, opening wide when he drops his lower jaw, crinkling when he grimaces. Mr. Clintons most obvious strength lies in a talent for language that is rare in politicians. He involves himself heavily in the writing of his formal speeches, but most often speaks without a script. Paul Greenberg, an Arkansas newspaper columnist who has been highly critical of Mr. Clinton during his five terms as Governor, said, He knows where all the buttons are in his audiences mind, and how to use the answer to just one question to push several buttons at once. After winning again in 18 and then serving another ten years as governor, Clinton, at age forty-six, decided to take on another challenge.

Is William “Bill” Jefferson Blythe Clinton a moral person, according to whose values? Morality is a human concept that doubtlessly evolves in some ways over time, and yet many would say that the basic precepts remain constant. What is considered a moral act to some might seem amoral or immoral to others. Politicians are not a class of people that come to mind when high precepts of morality are mentioned. By their very nature, politicians seem to have become the antithesis of moral people. They seem to pander for votes, and waffle on tough issues. A politician who dares to assert strong beliefs is more often than not, considered extreme. If you measured Bill Clinton against his predecessors in government office, you might easily build a case that he is the least moral in post World War history. Although most politicians are looked upon as immoral I feel Bill Clinton through his life has established a foundation for his morality. My views are based upon my life relating to his and knowing what he went through to get to where he stands.

After Clinton served his ten years as governor of Arkansas in my eyes I deem his political career capable of proceeding to the presidential election. With no outrageous political flaws Clinton could very easily be a productive president among the American people.

Fifth Business

---Character Response---

‘Fifth Business’, a book by Robertson Davies, has been written as a memoir of

Dunstable Ramsay. Dunstable Ramsay, renamed to Dunstan, during the course of the

livepaperhelp.com

book, is the narrator of this story. He writes this memoir to the Headmaster of the school,

where he was the Assistant Head and Senior History Master before his retirement. But

the memoir is only to be opened after his death, not before that. This information about

the book certainly implies that the content of the book and the way in which the life of

Dunstan and others has been described can be biased to a very great extent.

Dunstan has been observed as a very sincere and stiff person. But the abnormality in

his character does not show up till someone else mentions it to him. This is not to say that

Dunstan hides what was not very normal about him but it shows that during his life there

were others, because of whom Dunstan got a chance to think about his life, his nature and

his personality as a whole. We get to know a lot about him right from the beginning of

the story but a very important instance in his life is when the readers of the story get to

know more about Dunstan in a very straightforward manner. This is when Diana tells

Dunstable to change his name and says, “Why don’t you change it to Dunstan? St.

Dunstan was a marvellous person and very much like you mad about learning, terribly

stiff and stern and scowly, and an absolute wizard at withstanding temptation.”

(Robertson Davies. -). It clearly states for the readers, that Dunstan is a person who

seeks knowledge, which implies that he must be having deep insight into subjects he

seeks knowledge about, for instance, about saints and their lives. We also know that he

wrote several books on this subject. He is also someone who can easily express himself,

verbally and in writing. He is an expressive person with a great ability to form strong

opinions. This quote by Diana tells us that Dunstan is a stiff and stern person, a man with

proper principles and a person who follows rules at an age of about 0. Something here

can give the readers an indication of the kind of person Dunstan is going to change into

once he grows up. It foreshadows that a person who can have so much mental control at

such a small age, might grow up to be a very mentally-strong individual. He is very good

at withstanding temptation. But the most important fact that this quote reveals to us is that

Dunstan can control his emotions and behavior. At least on the surface, he appears to be a

very composed and strong individual. But the fact that he is still tender in age makes one

wonder what the reason behind his maturity might be. One can easily attribute this to his

days in the army. It must have instilled discipline in him.

Dunstan had always been passively influenced and molded by his life at Deptford, his

family and especially his mother. He has a want of becoming something he might not

have had a chance of becoming if he were to remain at Deptford all his life. But this does

not mean he can run away from what Deptford wanted to make of him. He is loyal to his

friends and people near him. He is secretive in matters concerning anybody. He does not

like to gossip or spread rumors, something that would totally defy what Deptford taught

him. Proper in conduct, he is determined to do what he wants and takes a fancy for. But

he never seems to take a liking to anything that is not expected of a self-righteous and

correct person. He is restrained, but very hard working in what he is supposed to do. Not

extremely ambitious, he is quite frugal in money matters but does seek progress in this

field. Luckily, Boy seems to help him to a very great deal as far his economic status is

concerned. He is a determined fellow who is modest. One of his most significant

character traits is that he is a very responsible person, being able to take upon his mind a

lot of stress due to this. After all, he does maintain that he was solely responsible for

Mary Dempster’s plight if nobody else was to take or share the responsibility.

But all this makes him too much of a proper and correct human being, almost saintly.

It makes him too good to be true. But there is a flaw here. Yes, he is abnormal, not quite

like the normal person. He takes life too seriously. He never lets his inner being come

out. Very restrained, he never shows any impropriety in conduct or behavior. And we

come to know about this when Liesl says to Dunstan, “Why don’t you shake hands with

your devil, Ramsay, and change this foolish life of yours? Why don’t you, just for once,

do something inexplicable, irrational, at the devil’s bidding, and just for the hell of it?

You would be a different man” (Robertson Davies. 6). It shows us that Dunstan always

kept his devil inside him and never let him appear on the surface. It is one of the things

one might not have easily understood, but Dunstan’s soul is pure. Liesl’s last name is the

demon’s name in the play ‘The Vision of Dr. Fautus’, where Faust was a magician who

sold his soul to the devil. Dunstan is nowhere near a magician, but definitely wanted to

become one at a point in time. it is important to remember a this point that it is in the very

presence of Liesl, that Dunstan, for the very first time notices a change in the way he was

behaving. Talking about matters that were supposed to be kept secret or talking loosely

was never his style. But what is there that one might not do in the presence of the ‘Devil’.

He is not in full control of himself and his behavior. Liesl than asks Dunstan, “Who are

you? Where do you fit into poetry and myth? Do you know who I think you are Ramsay?

I think you are Fifth Business” (Robertson Davies. 7). The real purpose of Dunstable

Ramsay in this story is of being a passive recorder of events and facts. His very nature,

the way he grew up and the kind of incidents that shaped his life account for his

motivation to become what he is today. The fact that he never took a liking to what his

hometown had to teach him made him passively rebel against the kind of life he would

have had to live. He becomes a different kind of person. His feeling of being responsible

for Mrs. Dempster’s situation causes him to be like the person he is to a very great extent.

He is a very inspired person and like it has been mentioned before, very considerate and

composed. There is a great deal that could still be said about his character on further

investigation. Dunstan himself is not aware of a lot of things about himself, especially

about his place in the whole story, even though to him it might seem he is.

Percy Boyd Staunton was introduced to us on the very first page of the book. He

remains there throughout, playing a very important part in the story. He has a specific

character of his own, at the same time; he is a personification of the world around him.

As we notice, he is a very materialistic person who lacks the value of spirit and is to a

very great extent quite the opposite of Dunstan. Dunstan introduces Boy to us as his

‘lifelong friend and enemy’, making Boy’s character a very interesting one. As a child,

we see, that Boy is a spoilt brat who is a bad loser and grows up to be a very ambitious

person. He is very successful and progressive person, but only in the field of money and

status. His strength is his sharp mind, which works very well when it comes to money

matters. But he lacks any real inner strength. He is the antagonist in this story and is a

part of various incidents, which lead to his downfall as a man with values and principles.

There are many incidents in the story which contribute towards telling the readers a lot

about Boy’s character, but one of the most important times is when Boy completely

denies his guilt of throwing the ill-fated snowball, which causes the story to take the route

it does. He acts in a very irresponsible manner throughout the play. The first time we see

what a cheap coward Boy is, is when Dunstan narrates to us, “We looked into each

other’s eyes and I knew that he was afraid, and I knew also that he would fight, lie, do

anything rather than admit what I knew. And I didn’t know what in the world I could do

about it” (Robertson Davies. ). He completely denies any responsibility of the bad

incident. He does not care what his friend would feel about the whole thing or how

Dunstan was to deal with it. He does not know how to deal with moral and mental

pressures in life. He is shallow of heart and lacks the depth of character. He does not

concern himself with anything that is of no use to him.

Not caring about people’s feelings is his style and we come to know about this on two

occasions. One is when Boy gives Dunstan film reels to be developed and later Dunstan

finds that the reels contained pictures of Leola in which she is stark naked. After this,

when Dunstan is at Boy’s place, Boy says, “Nice, nice, nice! Of course it isn’t nice! Only

fools worry about what’s nice. Now sit here by me, and Dunny on the other side, and be

proud of what a stunner you are” as a reply to Leo’s repeated pleading to not show the

photos in front of Dunstan (Robertson Davies. 157). It creates a feeling of hatred for Boy,

among the readers. Very inconsiderate, he treats his wife like garbage, some object

without feelings and insults her by being so rude to her in front of their old family friend.

The next time we get an insight into Boy’s character is when, at Christmas, Leo finds a

note in Boy’s clothes that tells her of what Boy has been up to with another woman,

committing adultery? And to this Percy Boyd Staunton says, “‘There’s no reason to carry

on like that…But if you think I intend to be tied down to this sort of thing’ and he

gestured towards the drawing-room, which was, I must say, a dismal, toy-littered waste

of wealthy, frumpish domesticity ‘you can think again.’” (Robertson Davies. 186). This

really crowns it all. He takes absolutely no responsibility of what just happened. He does

not think committing adultery is a crime, a moral one more than anything else, but the

fact that he does not even apologize for his wrong deed illustrates a lot about his

character. He says this to Leo in front of their children, scaring them for life. Lost

innocence can never be restored. He leaves his wife, the very person who would do

absolutely anything to be like the person Boy wanted to make her, howling and heart-

broken. Truly cruel and evil, Boy probably deserved what he got in the end.

All his life, Boy only looked for wealth and fame. Being the center of attraction and

dominating situations by any means was his life’s real motive. He wanted to surpass

everything and everybody in the materialistic world. His was the thought that money

could buy anything and was the only base of a life. For him too, Deptford might have

been something in the past, long forgotten and forbidden, but scarcely do people realize,

just how much, the forces that affected them as children, really drive them. Boy enjoyed

his life on the basis of the money and wealth he had amassed. Such achievements,

without the least trace of any humanitarian qualities; what a tragedy that is and this is

exactly the kind of person Boy was. A person with no honor, Boy is a hollow person,

with impure intentions he had lead his life and died, only to be forgotten as a regular rich

fellow.

All was well on a sunny July afternoon at a Santa Monica farmers’ market, where loads of people were gathered outdoors collecting fruit, and enjoying their day. Heart rates increased and tragedy struck as a 1 Buick emerged into the scene at top speed. The car uncontrollably succeeded in knocking stands over disastrously, managing to steal ten innocent lives, and send about forty to the hospital. The driver, Russel Weller, was an 86-year-old man.

This tragedy revived an issue already controversial senior driving. It raised questions about when it is safe for seniors to continue driving, and when it is time to take away the keys.

Elderly drivers are not necessarily terrible drivers, however nobody can deny that the skills necessary for driving deteriorate with age. The older we get, the weaker our senses become. The majority of us begin to find prescription glasses essential in order to sharpen our sight, and hearing aids to enhance our hearing. Reaction time plays a vital role in life tasks, especially in driving. Our reaction time definitely begins to deteriorate as we grow older, increasing the risks of automobile accidents involving elderly drivers. Studies prove that older people are among the most accident-prone groups on the road. According to a specific study by John Hopkins researchers for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the crash-per-miles-driven statistics for people age 80 or over is triple that of people ages 65 6.

Though many older drivers see driving slower as being safer and more cautious, this isn’t always the case. When driving slower than the surrounding cars, you are still at risk of getting rear-ended by another vehicle. In driving school, it is taught to go at the speed of traffic, whether it is above or below the speed limit. This is to obviously prevent the risk of collisions.

While elder drivers may be a hazard on the road, it is unfair for their license to be confiscated so suddenly. After all, driving is the ticket to independence. Taking away their advantage of driving is pretty much taking away their freedom, and they are left to burden others in helping them with everyday errands and tasks. Taking the bus may be an alternative, yet a big adjustment as well. The bus is not at your convenience as a personal vehicle would be, waiting for you in your driveway. Instead, one must abide by the schedule and arrangements the bus sets. According to Daniel Yi, Los Angeles Times writer and author of “Behind the Wheel,” some alternatives to driving include bus transportation and walking. Good old fashioned walking can be pleasant as well as a good workout, keeping us in fairly good shape. The bus can be used for long-distance transportation. You rest while the driver takes you to your destination.

Other solutions to the problem with older drivers would be to somehow retest them on their driving ability and skills. Romando Dixon of the Columbus Dispatch suggests testing adults every five to ten years to make sure everything

is working all right. This is a good method until the adult is labeled “unable to drive”. Once they are deemed as driving impaired, they should consider the bus and/or walking, and maybe even count on family to help them out by driving them from place to place.

Older people’s senses may not be as sharp as they used to be, and their reaction time might be deteriorating as time goes by, which are important reasons as to not allowing them the privilege of driving. However, a gesture such as this seems unjust and somewhat discriminating. Indeed, losing driving privileges can be a great loss of independence for seniors, however, loss of control behind the wheel is even worse.

John Donne wrote the essay, Meditation XVII, from Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions. This piece was written three hundred and seventy-eight years ago in 1678. John Donne wrote this essay at a time when he was very ill. Due to this, the main topic of his essay is that of death and of ones own mortality. In the beginning he lets us know that he is sick when saying and perchance I may think myself so much better than I am, as that they who are about me and see my state may have caused it to toll for me The bell Donne is talking about is the one that tolls every time a parishioner dies. Donne says that he might be so sick that the bell may be tolling for him and he does not even know it. At this point he is so sick that people have to take care of him. He feels that the people caring for him may have caused the bell to toll for him, especially those who see how sick he really is. John Donne, emphasizes the unity of the Catholic Church and he describes her as being universal. He says that church ceremonies such as baptisms and funerals are important to him. The young children who are baptized and those who die are all linked to him through God. With every baptism there is another life added to the church family. This life does not act or survive alone. It is connected and affects everyone one elses life in the congregation. In this essay, Donne talks about all humans being a whole. He uses the book as a metaphor, saying that God is the author and every man is a chapter in his book of life. If one person dies, their chapter should not be torn out of Gods book. Instead it should be translated into a better language and every chapter must be so translated Donne believes that God has a hand in everything and that, all which happens, happens for a reason. He states that God employs several translators; some pieces are translated by age, some by sickness, some by war, some by justice; but Gods hand is in every translation. The translations of age, sickness, war, and justice are all things that can cause death. In that case, these elements can translate human beings into spirits of heaven or to anywhere else God chooses to send them. In the middle of his essay, John Donne gives a significant quote No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory wereany mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. This is the most popular quote in John Donnes essay and today people still use this quote in many ways, even though it was written almost four hundred years ago. Donne means that no one person can stand alone. Human beings need others for support and survival. Then he talks about the death bell. He says that the bell tolls for thee, meaning all humankind. Whenever the bell tolls it tolls for more than the one person who has died. It tolls for all those who are left behind to mourn. When a person dies, we not only mourn their death but we mourn our own mortality as well. The death bell can bring focus to our own lives and help us live and discover our meaning. Donne says that it is not enough to go through our own misery but we must all feel the misery of our neighbors and all of mankind. He says that, tribulation is treasure in the nature of if, but it is not current money in the use of it, except we get nearer and nearer out home, heaven, by it. Pain and misery will bring us closer to God. At the end of his essay, Donne suggests that thinking of our own death and misery is not enough. He says that often times we do not think of these things until we are dying. We must also take part in the misery and deaths of others. Through sacrificing and suffering in others miseries we become closer to God. By considering and experiencing the death of others as they leave this world, our thoughts turn closer to God and our own afterlife. At the very end Donny says that God is the only one who can assure out existence in the after life. I found Donnes piece very interesting. I also found it extremely confusing and quite a challenge, which is partially why I was drawn towards it. I read it over and over and took advantage of outside sources in order for me to understand it better. His style of writing is almost before its time and I wondered how this style relates to other works of this time. This work was written a very long time ago and it so well written. Every sentence must be broken apart and reread in order for it to make sense. He expresses themes and true life issues in such a small piece or writing. John Donnes use of figurative language is what he is admired for. He also usesmetaphors to characterize humankind and death. He also relates the human body to a chapter in Gods book. John Donne also asks questions in his essay. These questions add to his style and allow the reader to become more involved and to stop and think. I would like to know and understand more about his use of literary terms and style of his essay. I think that the new criticism approach could help me. Hopefully this approach would be able to aid me in analyzing his writing approach and style of the Meditation essay. After looking and researching an approach that would be most beneficial, I decided to go ahead and stick with the new criticism approach. I found that Internet sites were the most useful and abundant of all sources. Although it was difficult, to pinpoint an exact site that could give me a clear definition of new criticism. The sight I found was very beneficial in helping me understand the concept of new criticism a little better. This website was written by Sklyar Burris and was titled the Literary Criticism Study Guide. Skylar gave a good and clear overview of the numerous critical literary approaches. Before jumping into the paper itself, I thought it would be a good idea to find out the pros and cons of a criticism approach. Burris gave three major purposes of criticism. The first purpose is to help us solve a problem in reading. The second is to help us choose the better of two conflicting readings. Finally the third reason is to help us evaluate all literature and to have a better understanding of its meaning. After finding out some of the reasons for this critical approach, I searched for the site that gave the clearest definition of new criticism. I also found this in Sklyar Burriss website. The definition I received was that new criticism is a formalistic approach to literature and it involves a close reading of the text. Formalistic critics believe that all information necessary to the interpretation of a work must be found within the work itself; there is no need to bring in external information about the history, politics, or society of the time, or about the authors life. Because they are interested in what the work itself has to say, formalistic critics (presumably) so not view works through the lens of feminism, psychology, mythology, or some other such standpoint, and they are not interested in the works affect on the reader. Formalist critics generally delight in a close analysis of irony, paradox, imagery, and metaphor. They are also interested the works setting, characters, symbols, and point of view (4). In the site written by Skylar Burris, I also learned that there are special terms used in the new criticism approach. One of the terms used is tension. Tension is used to describe the integral unity of a work, which results from the resolution of opposites mostly in irony and paradox (5). Intentional fallacy is another term used and it is the belief that the meaning or value of a work may be determined by the authors intention (5). Affective fallacy, is the belief that the meaning and value of a work is determined on how it affects the reader (5). External form are the outside forms such as rhyme scheme, paragraphs, and stanza forms. Objective correlative is a term that refers to a set of object, or a situation, as a chain of events which is the formula of particular emotion, such that when the external facts are given the emotion is immediately invoked (5). I think that tension is a term that I would use most for this piece of work. I also learned some advantages and disadvantages to the new criticism approach. One of the advantages is that this approach emphasizes the value of literature aside from its context. New criticism is also a good starting place from all critical approaches and many other approaches must start at new criticism. Being that it has its advantages, it has disadvantages as well. In Burriss article, I read that through this approach the text is seen in isolation. Formalism ignores the context of the work. It cannot account allusions. It tends to reduce literature to just a few rhetorical devices, such as irony, paradox, and tension (6). This means that the history and conditions of when a work was written does not matter. Unfortunately, that is one of my curiosities relating to Donnes piece. I would have liked to learn more personal things about his life, illness, and time period; however, that probably takes effect in the new historical approach. Since John Donnes essay is such a confusing piece, it takes extra time and effort to understand it. This essay is not something that can be comprehended with only one reading. It must be read repeatedly and even then it is still confusing. In order to help me in understanding this work I went to the Internet and looked up some sites on this work. There are numerous sites on just this one piece written by John Donne. People have used pieces of his essay and applied them to different subjects and to all that is going on in the world. I found one site that was the best out of all of them. It was extremely helpful in allowing me to become more familiar and comfortable with his work, although I am not sure who the owner of this site is and have yet to receive their reply. This site contained John Donnes entire essay and it was written with annotations. These annotations allowed me to click on the areas that were most confusing and would help clear up any questions with its commentary. This site also had many links to other sites relating to John Donne. In Sklyar Burriss website, she also gave a link so that readers may have the chance to see a small example of a new critical approach, applied to a piece of literature. This was the most frightening part of the whole experience and there were no annotations for it either. What I saw looked like a text massacre. This was a piece that had been written by Sandra Cisneros. They then applied the new critical approach to it. The text had literally been ripped inside out, and by the end of the story, it was completely turned around with a different meaning. Unfortunately they didnt clearly explain how to do this. So after paranoia set in, I began to seek other sources that would give me guidelines in ways to apply the new criticism approach. After a not so successful search, I was ready to take a stab at it and attempt the application of the new critical approach to the Meditation XVII. At first I would go back to the basics and to the general definition of new criticism. With the new criticism approach, certain elements are focused on, such as irony, paradox, imagery, metaphors, settings, characters, symbols, and point of view. Most of these elements are self-explanatory but before I can apply these methods to Donnes piece, I must have a clear understanding of what they mean and represent. I think that point of view is the necessary place to start. I would apply the point of view approach to this piece by reading each sentence at the same time taking in to account who is telling this story. I already had known it was written in the first person point of view and now that I read it over, I realized that John Donne refers directly to himself in nearly every sentence. The Meditation XVII has many symbols within its text. Symbols are something that represents something else. The very first sentence starts off with a symbol, as Donne first mentions the bell. On the fourth sentence there is a reference to the church, which symbolizes unity, connection and being universal; however, it also symbolizes death, silence, and disconnection. In line nine, there is another symbol which is the chapter. The word chapter symbolizes the role of each man in Gods Book, which is also another symbol. The island is used as the symbol of humankind. This is used to show that no man/island can live alone and that companionship is necessary, with out it there is no true life. Gold is another important symbol that is talked about at the end of the essay. Gold is described a treasure, money, and as in a mine. When looking at in from the new criticism standpoint, the meaning and symbolism of gold is left out. Gold only seems and represents what it is, such as money. When not seen through the new criticism standpoint, we realize that gold is the symbol of a much higher meaning. Gold is the symbol or experience and suffering. The bell is the most important and symbolic symbol in John Donnes Meditation XVII. The bell occurs in the essay from the very beginning, till the very end. In each of these instances the bell is either tolling or ringing. Through a new critical view the bell can also represent life, and silence. Irony is a mode of speech in which the meaning is the opposite of what is actually expressed. When looking at the approach through the means of irony, the text changes tremendously. The first sentence states for whom this bell tolls may be so ill. When seen through the eyes of irony this could mean that for whom the bell is silent for, may be so healthy that he knows its silent for him and maybe the narrator thinks he is so much healthier than he really is, that when the people who are not around him, do not see him, they cannot cause it to be silent for him. Being that irony is the opposite of what is exactly expressed, it may suggest that people actually dont need others to live and every person is his or her own island. After attempting the new critical approach and not knowing if Im coming or going, I found that I do see Donnes work somewhat different. It is always different when a work is viewed and studied on a different level and approach. The new criticism approach allowed this work to be read through different eyes, creating a different opinion. I really did not care for the new criticism approach applied to the Meditation XVII. I have learned the hard way, that I am more interested in the history of a work and its author, instead of the exact context itself.
